A Mac program launcher helps you find and open apps. macOS includes one already: Spotlight lets you search for an app by name or browse your installed apps. Separate launchers can add options such as configurable hotkeys, file search, and workflows, but you do not need one just to open applications.
What is a Mac program launcher?
A Mac program launcher is a feature or app for locating and starting applications on a Mac. You can typically type an app’s name into a search field or choose it from a visual list. “Launcher” describes this function; it does not refer to one specific app or a hardware device.
Apple describes Spotlight as “the central location where you can search, browse, and open your apps.” A launcher may focus mainly on apps, or combine app launching with other search and productivity features.
How to find and open apps with Spotlight

- Open the Apps interface from the Dock or the Spotlight icon.
- Type the name of the app you want to open.
- Select the app in the results and press Return, or click its icon.
You can also browse apps using category filters and grid or list views, and navigate results with the keyboard.
If an app does not appear
Apps downloaded from the App Store appear in Spotlight automatically. Apple says apps downloaded from other sources appear after they have been moved into the Applications folder. If you cannot find an app, check whether it is in that folder.

When a separate launcher may be useful
If opening apps is your only goal, Spotlight may be all you need. Consider a third-party launcher if you want app search to sit alongside features such as file search, custom hotkeys, commands, or workflows. The differences are in scope and configuration, not in whether macOS can open your apps without one.

How to choose
- Choose Spotlight if you want a built-in way to search for and open apps or browse an app list.
- Look at a separate launcher if you specifically want capabilities such as configurable hotkeys, broader file search, commands, snippets, or workflows.
- Check setup requirements before relying on a feature: a third-party app requires installation, and some features may need macOS permissions.
There is no single launcher that is right for everyone. Match the tool to the task, and avoid adding complexity if app launching alone meets your needs.
