A live 3D view can make an AI assistant’s memory easier to inspect, but the key distinction is between what the model receives in a request and what the assistant stores for later. The author reports building such a view and investigating token use; the available documentation explains the underlying mechanisms, but does not independently establish the project’s implementation or findings.
What the 3D view is meant to make visible
The phrase “where its tokens go” points to a practical question: what information is taking up space when an assistant handles a request? A visualization can help answer it only if it distinguishes the active request from information held outside that request. These are related parts of an assistant’s workflow, not interchangeable kinds of memory.
The specific display and observations described here are the author’s report. No independent account establishes which assistant or framework was used, what the 3D view showed, or how many tokens were allocated to particular content.
Active context is the request’s working space
A model’s context window is the capacity available for a request. It includes tokens from input and output, and may also include reasoning tokens, depending on the model and how usage is reported. Limits vary by model; a context-window figure should not be treated as a universal capacity. OpenAI explains context windows and model-specific limits in its conversation state documentation.

In practical terms, the active context is assembled from the conversation and other content supplied for the request. As that content grows, it uses more of the available window. A display that shows only stored memory would not, by itself, tell you what was included in a particular request.
Persistent memory is separate from active context
Persistent memory can retain information between sessions without keeping all of it loaded into every request. Anthropic’s memory tool documentation describes a file-based approach: the model requests operations, while the application executes them against storage it controls. Information can be retrieved when needed rather than placed in active context all at once.

That distinction matters in a visualization. A useful view would label stored information separately from information retrieved into a request, if the system exposes both flows. That is a design implication of the documented mechanisms, not a claim about what the author’s implementation displayed.

Token counts are more useful than visual size
A 3D representation can communicate structure or movement, but apparent volume is not a token count unless the display explicitly maps one to the other. Tokenization depends on the model’s encoding and the text’s language and content, so word counts or character counts cannot substitute for measuring the actual request.

OpenAI’s Help Center gives rough English-language estimates of about four characters per token or about three-quarters of a word per token. These are approximations, not a conversion formula. For an exact count, use the usage information available for the request or a tokenizer appropriate to the model. OpenAI describes token counting and tokenizer use in its conversation state documentation.
What a careful token display should distinguish
Before interpreting a view, check what each label represents. Token totals may refer to different parts of a request, and a memory store is not automatically part of the model’s active input.

- Active context: the messages and other content supplied for the current request.
- Persistent store: information retained outside the current request.
- Retrieved memory: stored information brought into a request when needed.
- Usage counters: provider-reported counts or an estimate from a tokenizer; these should be identified as such.
- Token categories: input, output, and reasoning tokens where the relevant model or usage report exposes them.
- Update timing: whether the view updates on each event or refreshes periodically.
Anthropic’s engineering article “Effective context engineering for AI agents”, published September 29, 2025, describes context as “a critical but finite resource for AI agents.” The phrase captures why tracking what enters a request matters, while leaving the exact accounting to the model and instrumentation being used.
What can—and cannot—be concluded from the project
The reported build offers a way to inspect an assistant’s memory visually. The documentation supports the broader explanation: context is request-level, persistent memory can live outside it, and token counts should be measured rather than inferred from a visual metaphor. It does not verify the author’s particular 3D view, its accuracy, or any specific conclusion about where that assistant’s tokens went.
