A glass-basket air fryer lets you see food browning without opening the appliance, and the glass container itself has no non-stick coating. The trade-offs are important: glass can be heavy and very hot, a crisper tray may still be coated, and glass models are not proven to cook better. CHOICE reports that the glass air fryers it tested performed on par with non-glass models.
What makes a glass air fryer different?
Instead of hiding food inside an opaque drawer, a glass air fryer uses a transparent bowl or basket. Designs vary: some keep a drawer-style layout, while others place a removable heating element above a glass container. CHOICE has named Australian examples including Healthy Choice’s 6.5L Digital Air Fryer AFG605, Ninja Crispi Portable, Dreame Tasti, Kmart Anko, Smith & Nobel and Sunbeam’s NutriCrisp Glass Air Fryer. These are examples cited by CHOICE, not a complete or guaranteed current list of products for sale.
CHOICE kitchen expert Chantelle Dart said the category was appearing more often in Australia and appealed to people seeking to avoid non-stick chemical coatings, as well as those who value easy cleaning and visibility. CHOICE has not published a quantified Australian sales or adoption rate in the cited coverage.
What are the practical benefits?
See food as it cooks
The clear bowl makes it easier to check colour and browning without opening the appliance. That can help you judge when food is ready, but it does not remove the need to shake or turn food when a recipe calls for it; visibility alone cannot ensure even crisping.

Avoid a coating on the glass container
Glass itself does not need a non-stick coating. However, that does not make the entire appliance coating-free: a crisper plate, insert or another food-contact part may be coated. CHOICE says the Dreame Tasti uses a stainless-steel crisper plate; it describes the Kmart Anko insert as non-stick and the Healthy Choice tray as stainless steel. Check the exact model and all food-contact components if avoiding coatings is a priority.
Wipe-clean glass
CHOICE says glass is easy to wipe and generally dishwasher-safe, and you need not worry about scratching or degrading a non-stick coating on the glass container. Care instructions can differ for trays and accessories, so check the manufacturer’s directions for each part rather than assuming the whole set can go in a dishwasher.

Does a glass basket cook better?
There is no evidence here that glass improves cooking performance. CHOICE reports that the glass models it tested performed on par with non-glass air fryers. Its account of Kmart’s model includes mixed results: vegetables cooked unevenly in one use, while chicken breast and potatoes cooked well in other uses. Those are one reviewer’s observations, not a guarantee of how the appliance will perform in your kitchen.
What are the drawbacks and safety considerations?
Hot glass needs careful handling
CHOICE reports measuring glass baskets at over 100 degrees, depending on the settings used; its cited passage does not specify a unit. The containers can therefore pose a burn risk when hot. Dart recommends following the maker’s safety instructions and looking for thermal shock-resistant borosilicate glass. Use the handling method the manufacturer specifies, and do not assume the clear container is safe to touch just because you can see through it.

Weight, grip and manoeuvring
Glass baskets weigh more than metal baskets, according to CHOICE, and can be harder to manoeuvre or wash by hand. Before buying, consider whether you can securely lift the container when full and hot, including when your hands are wet or your grip is limited. A removable-heating-element design may require handling both the element and bowl; CHOICE’s Kmart comparison describes that arrangement as awkward when hot.
Fewer shapes and sizes
CHOICE says there are fewer glass-air-fryer shapes and sizes than conventional drawer designs. Think about the foods you cook, the container’s usable capacity and shape, and whether the appliance fits your counter and cupboard. A larger stated capacity is not useful if the bowl is awkward to store or its shape does not suit your usual meals.

What should you check before buying?
- Decide whether seeing the food matters. A clear bowl is useful for checking browning without opening the fryer. It is not a substitute for turning or shaking food when needed.
- Check every food-contact surface. Confirm whether the tray, insert or crisper plate is stainless steel or non-stick; do not assume the glass bowl tells you about the rest of the appliance.
- Assess safe handling. Consider the container’s weight, grip and path from fryer to counter or sink. Look for the stated glass type and follow the manufacturer’s heat and cleaning instructions.
- Match capacity and shape to your cooking. Consider the actual bowl dimensions and whether the included containers suit your meals, rather than choosing by a litre figure alone.
- Check the complete ownership fit. Verify counter and cupboard space, accessory cleaning requirements, warranty terms, current Australian availability and price.
