A control dial on a docking station has no universal job. Depending on the dock, turning or pressing it may change system volume, run programmable shortcuts, navigate the dock’s own status screen, adjust a setting such as screen brightness, or control an audio application’s monitor level. Before buying, identify exactly what the dial controls, which operating systems support it, how the dock handles displays and bandwidth, and whether a power adapter is included.

What a docking-station control dial actually controls

The word “dial” describes the physical interface, not its function. A rotary control can send keyboard shortcuts to a computer, change a value inside the dock, or act as an encoder for specialist software. Two docks that look similar may therefore provide completely different results when you turn the knob.

System volume and media controls

On a simple design, the dial behaves like a volume wheel. Turning it raises or lowers the computer’s selected audio output, while pressing it may mute or unmute sound. Some docks also assign the press or nearby buttons to play/pause, track navigation, or microphone mute.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That behavior depends on how the dock communicates with the operating system. A knob that sends standard media or volume commands can work without a separate control application. A dock that exposes its own settings or custom commands may need a driver, utility, or background service. Do not assume that a dial labeled “volume” changes the volume of every device connected through the dock; the computer’s active audio output and the monitor’s own audio path still matter.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Programmable shortcuts

A more capable dial can be assigned to actions chosen by the user. TechRadar’s coverage of the TobenONE UDS060 describes four programmable shortcut keys and a rotary volume knob with a press function. With the manufacturer’s software, those controls can launch applications, take screenshots, control media, mute audio, or trigger a key combination. The knob may still provide basic docking functions without that software, but the custom assignments are software-dependent.

Programmability is useful when the dock sits beside a keyboard and you want one-handed access to a repeated task. It is less useful if the utility does not support your operating system, is blocked by company policy, or loses its settings after a firmware or application update. Treat “programmable” as a combination of hardware and software features, not as a guarantee that every action works on every computer.

Dock status and settings navigation

Some premium docks put a display on the dock itself. Their knob is primarily a navigation control: turn it to move through port information or settings, then press it to select an item. The Anker Prime dock manual, for example, describes using its knob to inspect port details and move through options such as screen brightness and screen-saver settings.

This design is fundamentally different from a system-volume dial. It may show power, connection, or port information even when no control utility is installed, but turning it will not necessarily alter the laptop’s audio level. Read the manual’s control map rather than inferring the function from the shape of the knob.

Application-specific audio control

On a professional audio control surface, an encoder can be mapped to a software mixer. Avid’s Dock guide says its Control Room/Monitor encoder defaults to Control Room level and uses a SHIFT function for Monitor level in supported applications. The assignment can be changed in EuControl settings.

This is an example of a software-defined control rather than a general laptop-dock feature. It is meaningful only when the supported application, control software, and account or hardware configuration are present. A dock intended for office peripherals should not be expected to provide the same application-level routing.

Brightness or volume for the monitor itself

A dial, a dock menu, and an on-screen slider can all appear to offer brightness or volume control while affecting different parts of the signal chain. BetterDisplay’s guidance points out that the monitor, its Display Data Channel (DDC) support, the audio path, and the dock can each determine whether a command has a visible or audible effect.

For example, a brightness value may change in software while the monitor’s backlight remains unchanged if DDC is unsupported or blocked by the connection. Likewise, audio may be routed through the laptop, the display, a headset connected to the dock, or a separate USB device. A control that changes one output will not automatically control the others.

Dial functions compared

Dial design What turning it does What pressing it may do Typical dependency
System/media control Changes the computer’s selected volume or sends media commands Mute, play/pause, or select a mode Operating-system command handling; sometimes no utility
Programmable dock control Runs a chosen shortcut, changes volume, or cycles assigned actions Launches an app, takes a screenshot, mutes, or sends a key combination Companion software and supported operating system
Dock menu encoder Moves through port information and built-in settings Selects a menu item Dock firmware and its own display
Display-control encoder May request monitor brightness or another display setting Confirms or changes a mode Monitor hardware, DDC support, cable, dock, and software
Professional audio encoder Adjusts a software-defined bus or monitor level Switches layers or functions, often with a modifier Supported application and control-surface software

What to check before buying a dock with a knob

1. Find the exact control assignment

Look for a diagram or manual that names the dial’s behavior in each mode. Check whether the knob has a press function, whether a modifier key changes its target, and whether turning it changes a continuous value or simply moves through menu items.

  • “Volume” should specify whether it controls the operating system, a dock-connected headset, or a monitor’s audio.
  • “Programmable” should identify the companion application and the actions it supports.
  • “Display control” should state whether the dock sends DDC commands or only changes a value shown on its own screen.
  • “Control-room” or “monitor” terminology usually indicates an application-specific audio workflow, not a universal computer-volume feature.

If the product page only shows a knob in a photograph, obtain the manual or contact the manufacturer before treating the control as a buying reason.

2. Verify software and operating-system support

Basic USB, video, network, and charging functions can work while advanced controls remain unavailable. The UDS060 example illustrates this split: its custom shortcut and knob assignments require TobenONE software, and the reviewed customization support is reported as Windows-only. A macOS computer may still use the dock’s ordinary ports, but that does not establish that the programmable controls work there.

Check the current utility download, supported Windows or macOS versions, processor architecture if listed, permission requirements, and whether the utility must run continuously. On a managed work computer, installation rights and background input-monitoring permissions can be decisive. Also check whether profiles are stored in the dock or only in the computer; a computer-only profile may not follow you to another machine.

3. Match the host port to the dock’s display requirements

Do not choose a dock by counting HDMI or DisplayPort sockets. The host computer must provide the required video protocol, bandwidth, and multi-stream capabilities.

TechRadar’s UDS060 coverage says two independent 4K displays at 60 Hz require a compatible Windows laptop with DisplayPort 1.4 Multi-Stream Transport (MST). The same coverage reports mirrored output across two external HDMI displays on macOS. Those are model-specific behaviors, not a rule for every USB-C dock. Confirm the vendor’s current compatibility chart for the exact laptop, operating system, processor generation, and display arrangement.

4. Calculate the real bandwidth available to your peripherals

A fast host connector does not automatically make every dock port fast. The reviewed UDS060 shares up to a 10 Gbps host connection across its ports; its USB ports are reported at up to 5 Gbps, with potentially less available when multiple ports are used at once.

This matters when an external SSD, webcam, audio interface, and network adapter are active together. A USB4 or Thunderbolt port on the laptop may provide a higher ceiling to the dock, but the dock’s own controller, shared upstream link, and individual port ratings still set practical limits. Read the dock’s bandwidth diagram if one is available, and consider which devices will be transferring data simultaneously rather than adding port speeds together.

5. Confirm the power-adapter arrangement

Some bus-powered docks operate from the laptop’s USB-C port; others need a separate supply for charging, displays, storage, or high-power peripherals. TechRadar reports that the UDS060 does not include a power supply or power adapter. That omission affects the total cost and the way you can use the dock.

Before ordering, check whether the dock includes a charger, what wattage it accepts, how much power it can pass to the laptop, and whether the intended peripherals require more power than the host port can provide. If a separate adapter is needed, verify that an existing one has the correct voltage, connector, and wattage; do not substitute a physically compatible adapter without checking its electrical specifications.

6. Separate dock control from monitor hardware control

If brightness or monitor volume is important, test the complete signal path. BetterDisplay recommends comparing the same display connected directly to the computer and connected through the dock, then checking the actual visible brightness and audible volume rather than assuming that a slider proves control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm that the monitor supports the relevant control protocol, that the cable and dock pass it through, and that the operating system is addressing the display you intend to change. A dock’s on-screen menu may adjust its own display or expose a software value without changing the monitor’s backlight. Audio may similarly bypass the monitor if a headset or USB sound device is selected as the active output.

7. Check the physical workflow

Consider where the dock will sit and what your hand will reach. A front-mounted dial is convenient for frequent adjustments but can be bumped. A knob that requires a modifier key or a long press may be safer from accidental changes but slower during a call or recording session. Check whether the display shows the new value, whether the dial has tactile detents, and whether the press action is distinct from rotation.

These are ergonomic decisions rather than published performance figures. If the product documentation does not describe them, use a retailer’s return policy or an in-person demonstration rather than assuming that two similar-looking dials feel the same.

Example: TobenONE UDS060 as a programmable-dial dock

The TobenONE UDS060 11-in-1 USB-C docking station is a useful example because its rotary control is more than a decorative volume wheel. TechRadar describes four programmable shortcut keys and a rotary knob that can also be pressed. With TobenONE’s software, users can map controls to launching applications, screenshots, media actions, audio mute, or key combinations.

The important qualification is that customization is tied to the companion software and is reported as Windows-only in the reviewed coverage. The dock’s basic ports can still be useful when the utility is unavailable, but a macOS buyer should not purchase it on the assumption that the custom knob mappings will work.

Display behavior also requires care. The reviewed model is described as supporting two independent 4K/60Hz displays on a compatible Windows laptop using DisplayPort 1.4 MST. On macOS, the coverage reports mirrored output across two external HDMI displays. Confirm the current compatibility information for your specific computer before relying on an extended dual-monitor workspace.

The same review reports a shared host connection of up to 10 Gbps, USB ports rated up to 5 Gbps, and the possibility of lower performance when several ports are used simultaneously. It also reports that a power adapter is not included. Those limitations do not make the dock unsuitable, but they change the purchase calculation for a multi-drive, multi-display setup.

Availability, software support, firmware, included accessories, and pricing can change. Treat the UDS060 details above as characteristics reported for the reviewed configuration and verify the current manufacturer documentation before purchase.

Contrasting example: a dial for dock menus

The Anker Prime dock illustrates why the same physical control can imply a different workflow. Its manual describes the knob as a way to inspect port details and navigate settings such as screen brightness and screen-saver options. In that design, the dial is an interface for the dock’s own status display.

That does not establish a general-purpose laptop-volume function. If you want a volume wheel, look for an explicit operating-system or media-control assignment. If you want to monitor power or change a dock setting without opening a computer utility, a built-in menu encoder may be the better fit.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Professional audio example: application-level monitor control

Avid’s Dock guide provides a third interpretation. Its Control Room/Monitor encoder defaults to Control Room level and uses a SHIFT function for Monitor level in supported applications. EuControl settings can change the assignment.

This arrangement is valuable in a studio because the encoder follows the software mixer’s routing model. It is not evidence that an ordinary USB-C docking station will control every application’s audio. Buyers should distinguish a professional control surface, whose function is defined by an application integration, from a laptop dock that exposes standard operating-system commands.

How to validate a dock before committing to it

  1. Download the manual and utility. Read the control diagram, supported operating systems, and installation notes before relying on the dial.
  2. Write down the intended outputs. List the laptop model, operating system, number of displays, resolution and refresh rate, USB devices, network adapter, and charging requirement.
  3. Match the display path. Confirm host video support, DisplayPort version, MST behavior, and the operating system’s extended or mirrored-display limits.
  4. Map the bandwidth. Identify which devices will transfer data at the same time and compare their needs with the dock’s shared upstream connection and per-port ratings.
  5. Check power. Confirm whether an adapter is included and whether its capacity meets laptop charging and peripheral requirements.
  6. Confirm the audio route. Decide whether sound will come from the laptop, monitor, headset, or USB audio device, then verify that the dial is assigned to that destination.
  7. Test monitor control separately. If brightness or display volume matters, compare direct and docked connections and observe the physical result on the monitor.
  8. Check return and update policies. Advanced controls can depend on changing utilities and firmware, so make sure you can return the dock if the advertised workflow does not operate on your exact system.

Troubleshooting common dial problems

The knob turns but the computer volume does not change

  • Check which audio output the operating system has selected.
  • Look for a mute state or a required press/modifier action.
  • Install or open the dock’s control utility if custom assignments require it.
  • Confirm that the utility supports your operating system and that its background service is running.
  • Test a different output, such as a headset connected directly to the dock, to determine whether the problem is routing rather than the dial.

Custom shortcuts are missing

Reinstall or update the companion software, then check whether profiles are stored per computer. If the dock’s reviewed customization is Windows-only, a macOS system may continue to provide ordinary docking while offering no programmable mapping. In that case, the limitation is compatibility rather than a defective knob.

The second display mirrors instead of extending

Check the host computer’s DisplayPort capability and MST support, then compare the result with the dock’s documented operating-system behavior. The UDS060 example reports independent dual 4K/60Hz output for a compatible Windows MST setup but mirrored output across two external HDMI displays on macOS. A USB-C connector’s shape alone cannot guarantee an extended desktop.

USB devices slow down when several are active

Review the dock’s shared upstream bandwidth and the individual port ratings. A host connection advertised at up to 10 Gbps may be divided among active ports, while ports rated up to 5 Gbps may deliver less under simultaneous load. Move the highest-priority storage device to the fastest port and avoid treating every labeled speed as an independent, simultaneous guarantee.

A brightness slider moves but the screen looks unchanged

Check whether the monitor supports DDC control through that connection and whether the dock passes it through. Compare the monitor directly with the computer, then reconnect it through the dock and observe the actual backlight. A changing software value without a visible change indicates that the command is not reaching the monitor hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The dock disconnects under load

Verify the power arrangement, adapter wattage, cable quality, and laptop charging support. A dock that lacks an included adapter may be operating from a host port that cannot supply the combined demand of displays and peripherals. Test with nonessential devices removed, then add them back one at a time to identify the load that triggers the problem.

A practical decision framework

Your priority Dial type to seek Critical checks
Fast everyday volume changes System or media-control wheel Selected audio output, mute behavior, and operating-system support
One-handed workflows Programmable knob with press function Utility availability, supported OS, profile storage, and shortcut actions
Checking dock health without a computer utility Built-in menu encoder On-dock display, status information, and settings covered by the manual
Changing monitor brightness Display-control encoder or software with DDC support Monitor compatibility, cable path, dock pass-through, and visible backlight response
Studio monitor or control-room level Application-integrated audio encoder Supported application, control software, modifier functions, and routing assignments
Heavy multi-device use Any dial type, provided the dock meets the workload Shared host bandwidth, per-port limits, display bandwidth, and power supply

Bottom-line buying advice

Buy the dock for a documented control workflow, not for the presence of a knob. First establish whether you need system volume, programmable shortcuts, dock-menu navigation, monitor hardware control, or application-specific audio. Then verify software and operating-system support, host and display compatibility, shared bandwidth, power-adapter inclusion, and the actual monitor and audio signal paths. A dial can be a convenient shortcut, but it cannot compensate for a dock that cannot drive your displays, power your peripherals, or support the computer you intend to use.
