A disorderly bond-market selloff is more than a steep fall in bond prices. It means trading itself has become impaired: bid-ask spreads widen, the amount available at quoted prices shrinks, volatility jumps, and investors may have to accept unusually high costs to sell. Prices can fall in an orderly repricing while markets remain usable. Understanding that distinction—and separating interest-rate, liquidity, and credit risk—helps you interpret headlines without assuming every bond, fund, mortgage or portfolio will react the same way.
What “disorderly” means in a bond market
The Federal Reserve defines market liquidity as the ease and cost of buying or selling an asset. A market is functioning orderly when transactions can be completed in reasonable size at prices close to current quotations, with normal bid-ask spreads and adequate market depth. A market can therefore experience a large price decline and still be orderly if buyers and sellers continue to meet without unusual friction.
“Disorderly” describes a deterioration in that trading process. Typical warning signs include:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Wider bid-ask spreads: the gap between the price a buyer offers and the price a seller requests becomes larger, so an investor crossing the spread receives a worse price.
- Reduced market depth: fewer securities are available at the best quoted prices, meaning a large order can move the market more than usual.
- Extreme or rapidly changing volatility: prices move sharply as participants revise quotes or withdraw them.
- Strained intermediation: dealers or other intermediaries become less willing or less able to warehouse securities and match a wave of sellers with buyers.
- Difficulty trading at expected prices: a transaction may still be possible, but only after accepting a substantial concession.
The Federal Reserve has said that low liquidity can amplify asset-price volatility and produce larger moves when a shock arrives. That does not establish a universal numerical threshold for the word “disorderly.” It is a description of market conditions, not a fixed percentage decline.

Three risks that headlines often blur together
A household can face three different forms of bond risk. They can occur together, but one does not prove the others are present.
Interest-rate risk: the market price changes
Existing fixed-rate bonds generally move inversely to market yields. When new bonds begin offering higher yields, an older bond with a lower coupon is less attractive, so its market price usually falls until its return is competitive. When market yields fall, the same relationship generally works in reverse.
The size of the move depends on the security’s maturity, duration, coupon, cash-flow structure and embedded options. Longer-duration holdings are more sensitive to a given change in yields, all else equal. A price shown on a brokerage statement or in a fund’s net asset value can therefore decline even when the issuer continues making every scheduled payment.

Liquidity risk: selling becomes harder or more expensive
Liquidity risk concerns the transaction, not whether the issuer ultimately pays. In a stressed market, a seller may face a wide bid-ask spread, a small amount available at the quoted price, a delayed execution or a price materially below the last displayed quotation. A security that is normally easy to trade can become costly to sell when many investors need cash at the same time.
Credit risk: the issuer may not pay
Credit risk is the possibility that a government, company, municipality or securitization vehicle fails to make interest or principal payments as promised, or that investors demand a larger risk premium because they believe that possibility has increased. A high-quality or government-backed issuer can have relatively low expected payment risk while its bond price still fluctuates with interest rates. Conversely, a security can have a stable market price for a period and still carry meaningful credit risk.

Issuer quality and ease of trading are therefore separate questions. March 2020 demonstrated that even core government and agency markets can experience severe trading strain without an immediate change in the ability of those issuers to pay.
How rising yields affect an individual bond and a bond fund
An individual fixed-rate bond
If you hold a conventional bond to its scheduled maturity and the issuer pays as promised, the contractual principal and coupons are still the amounts specified when you bought it. Its market value before maturity can nevertheless rise or fall. That quoted value matters if you sell, use the bond as collateral, calculate portfolio value or compare it with another investment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA simple duration approximation illustrates the mechanics. Suppose a bond portfolio has a duration of five years and market yields rise by one percentage point. Ignoring convexity, credit-spread changes, fees and other effects, its price might fall by roughly 5 percent (duration multiplied by the yield change). This is an illustration, not a forecast or a calculation for any particular security. The actual result depends on the bond’s cash flows and the size and shape of the yield-curve move.
A bond mutual fund or exchange-traded fund
A fund owns a changing collection of bonds and calculates a share price from their market values. When yields rise, the fund’s net asset value can fall even if the fund continues to distribute interest income. The income does not automatically cancel a market-value decline.
Unlike a single bond held by an investor until one maturity date, a fund has no single maturity date at which your shares return to a predetermined principal amount. The manager may sell bonds, receive maturities and reinvest proceeds while you remain invested. Your result depends on the fund’s duration, credit exposures, turnover, fees, distributions and the date you sell your shares.

Fund redemptions are a different issue from a market-wide trading breakdown. A stressed market can make underlying bonds harder to price or sell, but that fact alone does not mean ordinary retail redemptions will be halted. Check the fund’s prospectus and current holdings for its actual rules and exposures.
Why a selloff can become disorderly: the March 2020 case
What happened in Treasury and agency mortgage-backed securities
The Federal Reserve’s November 2020 retrospective describes U.S. Treasury and agency residential mortgage-backed securities markets as among the world’s most liquid and as important to financial-system functioning and monetary-policy transmission. In March 2020, however, investors around the world sold securities to raise cash.
Treasury yields initially fell as investors sought the perceived safety and liquidity of Treasuries. Later, yields rose amid intense selling pressure. Bid-ask spreads widened, including for less-liquid “off-the-run” Treasury issues, and stress reached heavily traded “on-the-run” securities and Treasury futures. The Federal Reserve said the selling appeared to strain dealers’ capacity or willingness to intermediate the flow.
Why dealers and market depth mattered
The June 2020 Monetary Policy Report account explains that dealers accumulated less-liquid securities while facing balance-sheet constraints. Market depth dropped, and intraday bid-ask spreads became exceptionally volatile, particularly for long-maturity securities. In practical terms, the market had plenty of securities but fewer intermediaries able or willing to stand between urgent sellers and natural buyers.
This is the central lesson: a market can be considered foundational and normally liquid yet still become difficult to trade when many participants sell simultaneously, dealers’ balance sheets are constrained and uncertainty changes prices faster than quotes can adjust.

How authorities responded then
During that historical episode, the Federal Reserve expanded repo operations, increased purchases of Treasury and agency mortgage-backed securities, and broadened financing arrangements for primary dealers. Those actions supported market functioning at that time. They are historical facts, not a promise that the same tools, timing or scale would be used in a future episode.
How to tell an orderly repricing from market dysfunction
| Feature | Orderly selloff | Potentially disorderly conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Prices and yields | Prices adjust, sometimes quickly, while quotations remain available. | Prices gap or change erratically as quotations are withdrawn or revised. |
| Bid-ask spread | Near the market’s usual range for that security. | Sharply wider than normal, increasing the cost of an immediate sale. |
| Market depth | Reasonable size can trade near the best quoted prices. | Small displayed amounts; larger orders move prices substantially. |
| Intermediation | Dealers and other intermediaries continue to make markets. | Intermediaries reduce inventories or are constrained from absorbing sales. |
| Investor experience | Execution may be less favorable than before, but trades are completed in customary ways. | Execution is delayed, unusually expensive or difficult at any reliable price. |
The Federal Reserve’s May 2023 Financial Stability Report also offers an important distinction: liquidity strains can occur without severe dislocations or reports that investors are unable to transact. A fast rise in yields is not automatically a market breakdown.
What the July 2026 market report actually says
The Federal Reserve’s July 2026 Monetary Policy Report describes a specific period; its figures are not live market quotes or forecasts. It says nominal Treasury yields rose on net from the beginning of 2026, with the two-year yield up about 60 basis points and the 10-year yield up around 35 basis points.
| Market segment | Observation in the July 2026 report | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. Treasuries | Yields rose on net; two-year yields increased about 60 basis points and 10-year yields around 35 basis points from the start of the year. | A dated description of yield changes, not a statement of today’s yields or an individual portfolio loss. |
| Corporate bonds | Yields rose moderately; spreads over comparable-maturity Treasuries narrowed somewhat and remained low by historical standards. | Both the risk-free-rate move and the credit spread affect corporate-bond prices. |
| Municipal bonds | Yields were roughly unchanged and remained elevated. | Municipal-market conditions do not necessarily mirror Treasury movements. |
| Agency mortgage-backed securities | Yields rose modestly, with spreads little changed on net. | Mortgage-market pricing has its own spread and prepayment dynamics. |
| Treasury market functioning | Functioning was described as orderly since the start of the year; liquidity worsened amid volatility following the Middle East conflict and later recovered near January levels. | A period-specific account of stress and recovery, not a guarantee about future liquidity. |
| Corporate and municipal functioning | Both markets functioned orderly over the period. | Conditions differed across fixed-income sectors. |
The same report states that Treasury and equity-market functioning had been orderly since the start of the year. That wording does not mean prices were flat; it means trading conditions remained usable by the report’s assessment.
How stress can reach mortgages, companies and local governments
Mortgage rates
Agency mortgage-backed securities yields are an important input into mortgage-rate setting. If those yields or their spread to Treasuries rise, lenders may face higher funding or hedging costs and quote higher mortgage rates. Mortgage rates also reflect lender margins, servicing economics, prepayment expectations, fees and other factors, so they do not mechanically move one-for-one with a Treasury yield.

Corporate borrowing
Corporate yields combine a Treasury-rate component with a credit spread. A company’s borrowing cost can rise because benchmark yields increase, because investors demand more compensation for default risk, or because liquidity deteriorates. The July 2026 report’s observation that spreads narrowed somewhat while corporate yields rose illustrates why looking only at the Treasury move can be misleading.
Municipal borrowing
Municipal yields reflect tax treatment, supply and demand, issuer finances, insurance, maturity structure and market liquidity. A municipal bond or fund can therefore perform differently from a Treasury fund even during the same broad rate move. Issuer-specific credit analysis remains separate from the question of whether a security can be sold efficiently.

How to map a headline to your own holdings
Before drawing a conclusion from “Treasury selloff” or “bond-market turmoil,” identify the exposure that actually appears in your account.
- Identify the wrapper. Is it an individual bond, a bond mutual fund, an exchange-traded fund, a money-market vehicle, a retirement-plan option or a structured product? Each has different pricing and redemption mechanics.
- Check duration and maturity. Longer duration generally means greater sensitivity to a parallel rise in yields. A ladder of individual bonds, a short-duration fund and a long-duration fund will not respond identically.
- Separate issuer and credit exposure. Note whether the holdings are Treasury, agency, investment-grade corporate, high-yield, municipal or mixed. A government-backed security can still lose market value from rate moves; a corporate or municipal security adds issuer-spread risk.
- Review liquidity terms. Look at trading volume, bid-ask spreads, redemption procedures, settlement timing and any gates, fees or exceptional provisions in the product documents. Normal retail access does not guarantee normal underlying-market liquidity.
- Match the exposure to your cash timeline. Ask when the money may be needed and whether a sale during a stressed market is plausible. A temporary quoted loss and a realized loss become the same thing when you must sell at that price.
- Account for income, fees and taxes separately. Coupon or distribution income, management fees, trading costs and tax treatment all affect the result. None should be assumed to erase a market-value change.
If your situation involves a near-term cash need, concentrated credit exposure, leverage, a complex fund or a tax-sensitive sale, review the plan with a qualified financial professional who can examine the actual security and your circumstances. A headline alone cannot supply that analysis.
Comparing two bond exposures
| Question | Why it matters | What to examine |
|---|---|---|
| How rate-sensitive is it? | Determines the approximate price response to a yield move. | Duration, maturity, coupon, convexity and the relevant yield-curve segment. |
| Who owes the money? | Determines payment and spread risk. | Issuer, guarantees, seniority, credit quality and sector concentration. |
| Can it be sold efficiently? | Determines the cost of converting the holding to cash during stress. | Bid-ask spreads, market depth, trading venue, volume and fund redemption terms. |
| Is it one bond or a fund? | Determines whether there is a single maturity date and how holdings change. | Fund mandate, turnover, distribution policy, maturity profile and net asset value process. |
| When is the money needed? | Determines whether an interim market price must become a realized price. | Emergency reserves, spending dates, withdrawal schedule and tolerance for delay. |
| What are the frictions? | Fees and taxes can change the after-cost result. | Expense ratio, commissions or spreads, account type and personal tax treatment. |
Common mistakes when reading a bond-selloff headline
- Equating a price decline with disorder: a sharp but well-functioning repricing is not the same as impaired liquidity.
- Assuming Treasuries cannot lose value: their payment risk may be low, but their market prices still respond to yields and liquidity.
- Treating every bond fund like a bond held to maturity: a fund has no single maturity date for your shares and its portfolio changes over time.
- Assuming income guarantees a positive total return: distributions and market-value changes are separate components.
- Using one sector as a proxy for all fixed income: Treasury, agency MBS, corporate and municipal markets have different spreads, cash flows and investor bases.
- Reading a dated statistic as a live quote: the July 2026 yield changes and the 2025:Q2 market-size figures describe those reporting periods only.
- Assuming an official intervention will repeat: the March 2020 policy response explains what happened then, not what authorities must do next.
Bottom line for everyday investors
A disorderly bond-market selloff is a liquidity and market-functioning problem layered on top of price declines. Rising yields can reduce the market value of existing fixed-rate bonds; longer-duration holdings usually feel that effect more. A stressed market can then make selling more expensive, even for securities issued by high-quality borrowers. Credit risk remains a separate question about payment.
