A digital set-top box receives television or related services over a delivery network, processes the selected content and sends video to a television or other display. The receiver may be a separate box or built into the TV; whether you need external hardware depends on the signal, service and receiver compatibility.
What is a digital set-top box?
A digital set-top box (STB) is a device that receives television or related services and provides video output for a display. The U.S. Department of Energy’s definition includes services delivered over terrestrial, cable, satellite, broadband and local networks. An STB can be external, or its receiver functions can be incorporated into a television or another device, as recognized in ITU terminology.
What does a set-top box do?
The receiver takes in a broadcast or network service, identifies and processes the selected program, decodes its audio and video, and sends the output to a screen. Its hardware may include a demodulator, demultiplexer, decoder and interfaces for receiving and presenting content. The implementation depends on the delivery network and service. Some systems also use conditional access or digital rights management, but those are service-specific features, not functions guaranteed by every box.

The right receiver depends first on how the television service reaches the home. Terrestrial, cable, satellite and IP delivery are distinct paths, and a receiver made for one is not automatically compatible with the others.

Terrestrial receiver
A terrestrial receiver gets television from an antenna and ground-based transmitters. The applicable broadcast standard varies by region. In its UK example, Ofcom explains that Freeview HD services require a DVB-T2-capable TV or box.
Cable receiver
A cable receiver gets service through a cable television network. DVB-C is the cable standard in Ofcom’s European standards explanation; systems elsewhere may use different standards. Provider requirements also matter.

IPTV receiver or client
An IPTV receiver or client gets television delivered using Internet Protocol over a broadband or managed IP network. This differs from television received through terrestrial transmitters, cable or satellite. UK rules for content regulation can depend in part on whether a channel appears on an Ofcom-regulated electronic programme guide; that regulatory distinction is specific to the UK.

Is a streaming box the same as a set-top box?
The terms can overlap in everyday conversation, but they do not identify one universal product category. An operator’s IPTV receiver and a general-purpose internet streaming player can differ in service relationship, compatibility and regulatory context. Identify the network and service the device is meant to receive rather than relying on the label alone.

Do you need a separate box for your TV?
Not always. A TV with a built-in receiver or tuner that supports the relevant service can receive it without an external box. For example, in Ofcom’s UK context, a TV must support DVB-T2 to receive the referenced Freeview HD services. The standard and compatibility requirements depend on the country, provider and service.
How to check whether a receiver will work
- Identify the delivery path. Determine whether the service comes by antenna, cable, satellite or IP network.
- Check the local standard and provider requirements. Standards differ by transmission type and region; confirm that the receiver supports the one used by your service.
- Check the TV’s built-in receiver. If it supports the required service and standard, a separate receiver may not be necessary.
- Confirm the video connection. Make sure the receiver has an output that can connect to the television or display. Requirements such as ports, resolution, recording and time-shift features depend on the specific model and should be checked in its product documentation.
“Digital TV converter box” can be a useful search phrase when looking for an external terrestrial receiver. It is not a universal substitute for a cable-provider box, satellite receiver or IPTV device. Verify the signal type and regional compatibility before choosing a product.

Why compatibility matters
A device’s general description does not establish that it supports a particular service. Compare the delivery network, regional transmission standard, provider compatibility and connection to the television. For a specific model, verify any claimed resolution, recording or time-shift functions, conditional-access requirements and software support in the manufacturer’s documentation.
