A digital home hub is a central point for setting up and controlling compatible smart-home devices. Depending on the model, it may also connect older devices to a newer ecosystem or link a Thread network to your home network. The word “hub” alone does not guarantee support for every device, protocol, or platform.

What does a digital home hub do?

A hub gives a household a shared way to commission, organize, or control compatible connected devices. Its exact role depends on its hardware, software, and the smart-home platform you use. Some hubs are dedicated products; controller functionality can also be built into a speaker, display, router, or another device.

In Matter setups, a compatible controller discovers, pairs, and controls Matter-certified devices. The setup generally also involves a compatible app. Check the device maker’s current setup and compatibility information, including any firmware requirements. TP-Link’s Matter setup guide and Matter-certified product information describe its supported devices and setup guidance.

How is a hub different from a bridge or Thread border router?

These terms describe related but distinct jobs. One product may perform more than one, so check the capabilities listed for the exact model rather than relying on the word “hub.”

Function What it does What to check
Matter controller Discovers, pairs, and controls Matter-certified devices. Whether the controller works with your chosen platform and the devices you intend to use.
Bridge Connects certain devices that do not natively support Matter to a Matter ecosystem. Which non-Matter devices and features the bridge supports.
Thread border router Connects a Thread network to other IP networks. Whether the specific product supports Thread border routing; Matter controller support alone does not establish this.

For example, TP-Link documents the Tapo H500 as both a Matter controller and a bridge: it connects Matter-certified products and integrates certain TP-Link non-Matter devices into third-party Matter ecosystems. That description comes from the manufacturer, not an independent test; check its current H500 documentation for exact hardware version, regional availability, supported devices, and firmware details.

Will one hub work with devices from different brands?

Sometimes, but brand variety alone does not determine compatibility. Each device needs to work with the platform and controller you plan to use, and some products require a bridge or a particular radio or protocol. Matter is intended to support compatible devices across ecosystems, but it does not make every device feature available in every platform.

Do you need a separate hub?

Not necessarily. Some households may already have controller functionality in a compatible speaker, display, router, or other device. A separate product may be needed if your existing equipment lacks the role or protocol support your devices require, or if you need a bridge for devices that do not natively support Matter.

  • Wide Device Compatibility: Connect compatible smart devices from Aeotec and many other brands to build a unified system for lighting, voice control, energy management, and climate settings

Start with the devices you own or plan to add, then identify their platform and connection requirements. If you have Thread devices, look for a Thread-capable border router. If you want to bring certain non-Matter devices into a Matter ecosystem, check whether a compatible bridge supports those exact devices.

What should you check when choosing a hub?

  1. Platform: Confirm support for the ecosystem and app you intend to use, such as Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or another platform.
  2. Device compatibility: Check the exact device models and the features supported by the controller, app, and platform.
  3. Protocols and radios: Verify the connections your devices use, such as Matter over Wi-Fi or Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave, or another device-specific link. Do not assume a hub supports a protocol just because it is called a hub.
  4. Thread support: If you have Thread devices, confirm that your setup includes a Thread-capable border router.
  5. Bridge support: If you want to connect devices that are not Matter-native, check whether the hub bridges those exact products into your chosen ecosystem.
  6. Model, region, and firmware: Confirm the hardware version sold in your region, its current firmware requirements, and the manufacturer’s latest compatibility information.

Does a hub let smart-home devices work without the internet?

Some Matter commands can be handled locally. Google says applicable local command handling can avoid routing commands through Nest or the device maker’s cloud; see its guidance on preparing a smart home for Matter. That does not establish that every feature, remote access, or service works offline. Local control, cloud-dependent features, and access from outside the home are separate capabilities, so check the documentation for your specific setup.
