A digital fingerprint is a compact representation used to identify or recognize a file, a browser or device, or digital media. The term covers different techniques: a file hash helps check whether data changed, a browser fingerprint combines observable device and browser traits, and a media fingerprint helps recognize matching or similar content.

What is a digital fingerprint?

There is no single process behind every digital fingerprint. The word describes a representation derived from the thing being identified. A hash is calculated from data; a browser fingerprint is assembled from observable characteristics; and a media fingerprint is generated from selected features of audio, video, images, or text.

These methods have different purposes and matching behavior. A changed file can produce a different hash, while a media-recognition system may still match a modified recording. A browser fingerprint describes a configuration that can help distinguish or link a browser or device; it is not a fingerprint of a particular file.

How does digital fingerprinting work?

File fingerprints: hash the data

A hash function processes a file or other data and returns a digest, also called a hash value or message digest. A system can compare that digest with a known value to check for changes or identify known data. NIST defines a digital fingerprint as “a hash that uniquely identifies data” and notes that changing one bit in the input produces a completely different digest. NIST cautions that its glossary definitions should be read in the context of their source documents. NIST’s Digital Fingerprint glossary entry.

“Uniquely identifies” is useful shorthand, not a guarantee that every possible input has a globally unique digest. Collision risk and suitability depend on the hash function and its application; the cited definition does not evaluate particular algorithms. In practical integrity checks, the expected digest is compared with the digest calculated from the file. A mismatch indicates that the data differs, but does not by itself explain why it changed.

Browser and device fingerprints: combine observable signals

A website or embedded script can collect characteristics exposed by a browser or device and combine them into a profile. Examples include browser version, language, time zone, display resolution, fonts, supported audio or video codecs, settings, and other configuration details. Some signals can be obtained through JavaScript and CSS. MDN’s fingerprinting overview describes examples of browser signals.

The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) lists additional possible signals or inferences, including device configuration, network protocols, CSS, JavaScript objects, HTTP headers, clock information, TCP stack variation, fonts, plugins, and APIs. Implementations may combine some of these with IP addresses or other identifiers; no single site necessarily uses all of them. ICO guidance on storage and access technologies.

The resulting profile can help identify or re-identify a visiting user, user agent, or device. The W3C explains that different sites may be able to correlate activity across origins even when cookie policies prevent them from accessing one another’s cookies, because a fingerprint can be relatively distinctive and consistent across those origins. Media fingerprints: describe content features for matching

For audio, video, images, or text, a fingerprinting system analyzes inherent properties of the content and creates values representing selected features. It can store those values in a database and compare new material against stored fingerprints. Unlike an ordinary file hash, some media systems can recognize similar or altered material—for example, a recording of a film displayed on a screen or a cover version of a song. The EUIPO describes common system components as fingerprint generation, a database, detection, and tracking. EUIPO’s guide to digital-media fingerprinting.

What are digital fingerprints used for?

Approach What is fingerprinted What a match can indicate Typical uses
Hash or file fingerprint A file or other data stream Whether the data matches the data represented by a known digest; even a one-bit change can produce a different digest. File-integrity checks and comparison against known data.
Browser or device fingerprint Observable browser and device characteristics That visits or activity may come from the same or a similar browser or device configuration. Security or fraud detection, and potentially tracking across visits or origins.
Digital-media fingerprint Selected features of audio, video, images, or text That content may match, or resemble, material already represented in a database. Content recognition, rights workflows, tracking, forensics, or detecting illicit material.

These are broad categories, not guarantees about a particular implementation. A hash-based system checks data against a digest; a media system may be designed to tolerate some changes; and a browser fingerprint is based on configuration signals rather than file contents.

Hash databases can also support content-identification workflows. NIST describes cryptographic and perceptual hashes as ways to tag and identify known harmful, illegal, or sensitive content through shared databases. Organizations may exchange identifiers and associated information without exchanging the underlying content. This does not mean that every privacy risk is eliminated. NIST’s report on reducing risks posed by synthetic content.

Can websites identify me without cookies?

Yes. Browser fingerprinting can support recognition or correlation without relying on a cookie that persists in the browser. W3C says fingerprints may enable cross-origin tracking without transparency or user control, because a browser fingerprint typically cannot be cleared or reset like a cookie. Whether a particular site does this depends on its implementation.

Browser and device signals can also serve security purposes. The ICO gives the example of using hardware, browser, location, and IP information to assess potentially fraudulent account creation or credential use. The same general capability can raise privacy concerns when used to correlate visits without meaningful awareness or control.

Does a VPN or clearing cookies stop browser fingerprinting?

Neither is a guaranteed way to prevent fingerprint-based correlation. Clearing cookies removes or changes cookie data, but it does not necessarily change the browser and device characteristics used to build a fingerprint. A VPN changes the network route and usually the IP address visible to a site, but other observable signals may remain.

W3C states that completely eliminating fingerprinting by a determined adversary through widely deployed technical means is implausible. Mitigations can still reduce exposure, with results depending on the threat model and implementation. The practical distinction is between reducing the number or distinctiveness of signals and guaranteeing that no one can correlate activity; the latter cannot be promised.

What does browser fingerprinting mean for privacy and law?

A browser fingerprint can be difficult for a user to inspect, reset, or control, and signals can potentially be combined across sessions or sites. At the same time, fingerprinting is not inherently a tracking technique: hashes and media fingerprints are also used for integrity checks, content recognition, and security. The privacy impact depends on what is collected, how it is combined, retained, and used, and what transparency and controls exist.

For the UK specifically, the ICO says PECR regulation 6 applies when fingerprinting stores information on a user’s device or accesses information stored on it. The ICO also says UK GDPR applies where processing involves personal data. This is UK regulator guidance, not a statement of legal requirements in other jurisdictions or advice for a specific case. See the ICO’s guidance.
