A digital badge proves a bounded claim: the named issuer says a specific person met the criteria for a defined achievement. In a well-implemented Open Badges credential, a reviewer can inspect the issuer, recipient reference, criteria, date, status and supporting evidence, and cryptographic proof can reveal tampering. The badge image alone does not prove a universal skill level, independent accreditation, current performance, job readiness or employer acceptance.
Start with the claim, not the artwork
A badge is best understood as a portable record of one achievement, not as a general “proof of ability” stamp. The issuer defines the achievement and its requirements, then makes a claim that the earner satisfied them. That achievement might be a course outcome, a demonstrated competency, a completed project, a workplace milestone or simple participation in an event.
Two badges can use nearly identical graphics while representing radically different claims. One might require a proctored, performance-based assessment; another might require attendance at a one-hour session. The visual design cannot tell you which is which. The metadata and evidence do.
What information a verifiable badge contains
Open Badges are information-rich visual tokens. The image is a presentation layer; the underlying assertion carries the useful detail. 1EdTech describes badges as records that identify who issued the recognition, who earned it and which criteria applied. Mozilla’s badge documentation similarly describes an online achievement record whose metadata points to the issuer, criteria and evidence.

Issuer and achievement
The record names the organization or individual making the claim and describes the achievement being recognized. A verifier should be able to determine whether the issuer has relevant expertise, authority or a legitimate relationship to the skill being claimed.
Recipient reference
The credential includes a verifiable reference to the earner. This confirms that the assertion is about the person who presents it under the credential’s identity model; it is not the same as independently observing everything that person can do.
Criteria and evidence
Criteria explain what had to be completed or demonstrated. Evidence can link to work samples, project records, assessor comments or other documentation of the work. Some badges expose a detailed rubric; others provide only a short completion condition.
Dates and status
An assertion can include an issuance date, valid-from and valid-until dates, and a status such as active, suspended or revoked. These fields matter when a skill changes quickly or when an issuer withdraws a credential.
Framework alignments and tags
Issuers may map a badge to an educational standard, occupational framework or searchable skill tags. An alignment supplies context about the intended domain; it does not make the badge automatically equivalent to a license, degree or another issuer’s credential.

Cryptographic proof
The Open Badges 3.0 specification, announced by 1EdTech on May 29, 2024, defines proof information that lets a verifier check the issuer’s identity and detect changes to the assertion and its claim contents after issuance. This supports authorship and integrity. It does not validate the issuer’s quality, the difficulty of the assessment or the truth of claims that were never required as criteria.
What a digital badge can prove
An issuer’s defined achievement claim
The central proof is: “This issuer says this person met these stated requirements.” Read the criteria literally. If they describe completion of five lessons, the badge proves that defined completion claim—not mastery of every topic covered by the lessons.

A reviewer can follow the record to the issuer, criteria, dates, recipient reference and any linked evidence. That traceability is substantially stronger than an undated screenshot or a logo pasted into a résumé, because the reviewer can inspect the underlying assertion.
Integrity and issuer authorship, when implemented
Valid proof data can show that the credential was issued by the identified issuer and has not been altered. If verification fails, the record may have been changed, the issuer key may be unavailable or the credential may no longer be valid. A successful integrity check still says nothing about whether the assessment was demanding.
The scope chosen by the issuer
A badge can document a narrow, useful milestone: for example, completion of a specified accessibility audit, demonstration of a particular software workflow or delivery of a reviewed project. Its value depends on how clearly that scope is stated and how closely it matches the decision a reviewer must make.

What the badge does not prove on its own
A universal level of competence
There is no single proficiency threshold shared by every badge issuer. A “beginner,” “advanced” or “certified” label has meaning only within that issuer’s definitions. Comparing labels without comparing criteria can produce a false equivalence.

The badge format does not reveal how hard it was to earn. Mozilla gives event attendance as an example of a lightweight badge and contrasts it with badges based on complex, evidence-driven assessment. Look for the actual task, passing standard, assessor role and opportunity for review.
Independent accreditation or legal authorization
Putting a qualification online does not turn the issuer into an accreditor, regulator or degree-granting institution. A badge cannot substitute for a license, statutory certificate or other credential where a law, contract or employer policy requires one.
Current ability
An old assertion may describe a capability that has faded, and a revoked or suspended assertion should not be treated as active. Check issuance and validity dates and query the current status rather than relying on a static image.
Job readiness or employer acceptance
A badge can give an employer useful evidence to investigate, but no standard guarantees that an employer will recognize it or that the earner can perform unaided in a real job. Hiring decisions may also require work samples, references, interviews, regulated credentials or an employer’s own assessment.

Identity beyond the verification model
Verification confirms the recipient and issuer data represented in the credential. It does not independently watch every task the person performed, rule out assistance that the criteria allowed, or establish identity beyond the checks used by the issuer and platform.
Badge, certification and degree: the practical difference

These categories can overlap in a learning pathway. An institution may issue badges for milestones inside a degree program, while a professional body may use badges to document continuing education. The badge remains evidence of the particular milestone; it does not erase the distinctions among the larger qualifications.
How to evaluate a badge before relying on it
- Identify the issuer. Confirm the exact organization or individual and investigate its expertise, authority and relationship to the claimed subject. A familiar name is not a substitute for relevance.
- Read the criteria. Look for observable outcomes, required tasks, proficiency levels, pass thresholds and whether the requirements are specific enough to be checked.
- Inspect the assessment. Determine who evaluated the work, whether the evaluator was independent, whether a rubric or exam existed, and whether reassessment or appeals were possible.
- Review the evidence. Open linked work samples or assessor notes when available. Check that the evidence relates to the named earner, falls within the credential’s scope and is not merely a course attendance record.
- Check dates and status. Record issuance, valid-from and valid-until dates. Look for suspension or revocation information and verify that the credential is active at the time you need it.
- Interpret framework alignment carefully. A mapping to a recognized framework can clarify vocabulary and level. It is context, not automatic proof that the badge equals every credential carrying the same framework reference.
- Match the audience. A badge from a known employer or respected professional body may be useful for that organization’s hiring or progression decisions. An attendance badge may be appropriate for participation records but weak evidence of independent skill.
How a verifier should check a presented badge
Use the credential’s verification view
Follow the issuer or platform’s verification link rather than accepting a copied image. Confirm that the page identifies the same earner, issuer, achievement and dates shown by the presenter.
Check proof and status
Where Open Badges 3.0 proof is provided, run the available verification check. A valid result should indicate that the issuer can be authenticated and that the assertion has not been altered. Then check whether the status is active and whether the validity window has ended.
Judge the claim’s substance
Read the criteria and evidence before deciding what the badge means for your purpose. If you need evidence of coding ability, for example, a link to a reviewed project and the review standard are more informative than a generic “coding” title.

Use additional evidence for high-stakes decisions
For hiring, regulated work or progression decisions, combine the badge with a work sample, interview, references, transcript or required license. Treat the badge as one documented signal, not as a complete substitute for a performance assessment.
Common warning signs and sensible responses
- Only an image is available: ask for the original verification record and metadata.
- Criteria say only “completed” without explaining what was assessed: treat it as a completion record, not proof of proficiency.
- No issuer identity or contact information: do not rely on the claim until authorship can be established.
- Expired, suspended or revoked status: ask whether a current renewal or replacement credential exists.
- Framework logo without a level or mapping: request the exact alignment and its scope.
- Evidence belongs to a group rather than the earner: confirm what work the individual personally completed.
- Credential language implies a legal license: verify the relevant regulator’s requirements separately.
Comparing two badges for the same decision
Use the same questions for both credentials instead of comparing artwork or titles. Rate each on issuer credibility and domain relevance; specificity and difficulty of criteria; independence of assessment and quality of evidence; recency and revocation handling; alignment to relevant occupational requirements; and portability and verification support.
A badge with fewer decorative features can be the stronger credential if it has a clear performance task, an identifiable assessor, accessible evidence and a current status check. Conversely, a polished badge with broad language and no evidence may support little more than participation.

- Share the verification link or portable credential, not a cropped screenshot.
- State the achievement in the issuer’s own scope and include the date when it matters.
- Link to permitted evidence or a work sample that demonstrates the outcome.
- Explain any renewal or expiration requirement.
- Pair the badge with the experience, projects or assessment results that show how you can apply the skill.
Open Badges are designed to sit alongside traditional qualifications and professional accreditation. Their strongest use is precise documentation: they make a particular issuer’s claim easier to inspect, share and verify. Their limits are equally important. The badge proves only the defined achievement, under the issuer’s criteria and verification model; the reader must supply the judgment about quality, currency and relevance.
