A laboratory team demonstrated that an autocatalytic chemical reaction could act as the nonlinear element in a small winner-take-all classifier. They encoded binary images as catalyst concentrations in a 16×16 well-plate layout, then used reaction timing to select among candidate classes. This was a proof of concept—not evidence of a general-purpose computer or a practical replacement for electronic image classifiers.
What the chemical neural network did
Researchers at Brown University, led by Jacob Rosenstein, combined a copper-catalysed click reaction with automated liquid handling and UV-Vis spectroscopy. In the reaction, 2-azidoethanol and tripropargylamine produce tris(triazolylmethyl)amine. That product promotes the production and activity of Cu(I), which in turn supports further reaction: the product helps catalyse the process that makes more of itself. This feedback is the autocatalytic behavior used for computation.
In a winner-take-all network, candidate classes compete, and the first to meet a defined condition is selected. Here, the condition was the reaction transition time, t₁/₂. The initial concentration of tris(triazolylmethyl)amine could tune that time. During training, the researchers adjusted network weights so that the candidate associated with the input’s most similar class reached the transition first.

How an image became a chemical input
Encoding the pixels
The demonstration used binary 16×16-pixel images. Each pixel corresponded to a position in a well plate, and its color was represented by the initial catalyst concentration at that position. In this setup, image data was not stored as ordinary electronic pixel values for the classification step; it was represented by concentrations across the plate.

Forming and comparing candidate classes
A robotic fluid handler removed volumes from the wells according to the network’s weights and pooled the samples for each candidate image class. The researchers added fresh reagents to those pools and monitored the reactions with UV-Vis spectroscopy. The pool that reached the transition first supplied the winning classification.
What the result establishes—and what it does not
The demonstration shows one way reaction kinetics can perform a classification operation: autocatalytic chemistry provides the nonlinear behavior, while the timing of competing reactions determines the selected class. It also illustrates a substantially different workflow from an electronic neural network, relying on chemical mixtures, a well plate, robotic liquid handling and optical monitoring.

The account reports no named classification-accuracy figure, sample size or benchmark. It therefore does not establish that the method is faster, more accurate, cheaper or more energy-efficient than electronic classifiers. Nor does the described experiment show broad scalability, practical deployment or general-purpose computing. Its supported scope is a laboratory proof of concept on encoded binary images.
Why autocatalysis matters here
In an ordinary reaction, products are formed as reactants are consumed. In an autocatalytic reaction, a product also helps accelerate the process that produces more product. That feedback can create a changing reaction rate and a measurable transition, giving the researchers a physical signal to use in the competition between candidate classes.

Chemistry World quoted infochemistry researcher Ekaterina Skorb describing the click reaction as “the click reaction is really robust” and saying, “It’s a really simple reaction and [has] clear rules on how we can use it, and what is input and output.” Those remarks concern the reaction’s properties and usability; they do not establish that the computing system is mature or ready for deployment.
