Short answer: a ChatGPT Dot is software running through ChatGPT, not a standalone listening gadget. It can use a connected computer’s microphone, camera, or screen only after you connect that computer and grant the ChatGPT app the relevant operating-system permissions. A Dot can receive ChatGPT memories and recent conversation context, and Dot conversations can add information to ChatGPT Memory. Turning Memory off stops future sharing, but it does not erase context already transferred. Deleting the Dot removes the Dot’s own context; files, conversations, and ChatGPT memories are managed separately.
What a ChatGPT Dot actually is
OpenAI describes a Dot as an always-on agent inside ChatGPT with its own cloud computer. The documentation does not describe a dedicated physical ChatGPT Dot device with its own microphone or speaker. In practical terms, the Dot is a software agent that can work across ChatGPT and services you choose to connect.
That distinction matters for privacy. “Always-on” describes the agent’s availability in the service; it does not mean a hidden hardware microphone is continuously listening in your room. Access to your local computer’s sensors is conditional on setup, permissions, and the connection remaining active.

Microphone, camera, and screen access requires a connection and permission
Before a Dot can access a computer’s camera, microphone, or screen, you must connect that computer to the Dot and grant the ChatGPT app the corresponding permission in your device settings. If you never connect a computer, or if the operating system denies a permission, the Dot cannot use that local source through the documented path.

Permissions are separate. Allowing the microphone does not automatically grant camera or screen access. Review the ChatGPT app’s entries in your operating system’s privacy settings and remove permissions when they are no longer needed. A permission change is a practical way to stop future sensor access, but it does not delete information the Dot may already have incorporated into its context.
Connected apps are another access path
A Dot can use apps and services that you deliberately connect through ChatGPT’s Plugins tab, subject to the permissions those services expose. The available apps and capabilities can vary by account, region, and rollout stage. Disconnecting an app prevents new access through that connection; it does not erase context the Dot previously built from the app.
What “hear” means here
The documented microphone behavior is permission-gated access to a connected computer. It should not be read as evidence that a physical Dot device is secretly listening without consent. Treat any microphone permission as an explicit data-sharing decision: grant it for a task that needs audio, then revoke it when the task is finished.

What a Dot can remember
Memory is shared in both directions
OpenAI’s Help Center states: "Your dot can receive memories and recent conversation context from ChatGPT, and conversations with your dot can contribute to memory in ChatGPT." This creates two flows:
- ChatGPT to Dot: existing ChatGPT memories and recent conversation context can inform the Dot.
- Dot to ChatGPT: details from conversations with the Dot can be added to ChatGPT Memory.
Memory sharing can continue after setup. Turning ChatGPT Memory off stops ongoing sharing, but it does not remove context that the Dot already received. To remove existing information, use the separate deletion controls described below.
Dot context can persist while the Dot exists
OpenAI says a Dot can retain conversation and plugin context for as long as you keep that Dot. The service does not currently provide a control for inspecting, correcting, or deleting individual Dot memories one by one. The available broad action is to delete or reset the Dot, while managing information that was copied into ChatGPT Memory through ChatGPT’s own memory settings.

Deletion is not one universal eraser
Deleting the Dot removes its own context. It does not automatically remove every artifact created elsewhere. Files, Codex threads, ordinary ChatGPT conversations, and memories held by ChatGPT are stored and controlled separately. Likewise, files created or used in ChatGPT Library, on your computer, or in connected storage follow the retention rules of those locations.

Dot context does not retain credentials, images, or screenshots according to OpenAI’s FAQ. That statement concerns the Dot’s own context; it does not change how a connected service, ChatGPT Library, your computer, or another storage provider retains a file or image.
What a Dot can share or do through connected services
Proactive research is read-only with respect to plugins
OpenAI says proactive research can look for useful updates in permitted connected sources and save private notes, including when you have not made a specific request about that information. The documented restriction is important: this research can read permitted plugin sources, but it cannot directly send messages, change app content through plugins, or control your browser or computer.

Later actions use normal approval and safety rules
A subsequent action, such as sending an email, is not treated as an unrestricted continuation of research. It is governed by ChatGPT’s ordinary action rules, approval settings, and safety checks. A Dot can still make mistakes, so configure confirmation requirements for actions that could publish information, alter an account, or contact another person.
Custom Rules can narrow behavior
Use Custom Rules and approval controls to set boundaries such as requiring confirmation before sending messages, changing records, or sharing sensitive details. These safeguards reduce the chance of an unwanted action; they are not a guarantee that every interpretation or execution will be correct.
Privacy controls: a practical step-by-step map
- Limit computer access. Do not connect a computer unless the Dot needs it. In the operating system’s privacy settings, review ChatGPT’s camera, microphone, and screen-recording permissions. Disable each permission you no longer need.
- Review connected apps. Open ChatGPT’s Plugins tab, inspect the services and scopes you granted, and disconnect anything unnecessary. Remember that disconnection blocks new access but does not remove information already incorporated into Dot context.
- Stop future Memory sharing. Turn off Memory in ChatGPT when you do not want new Dot information exchanged with ChatGPT Memory. This setting halts future sharing; it does not erase context the Dot already received.
- Remove the Dot’s own context. Delete or reset the Dot using its management controls. Then check ChatGPT Memory, ChatGPT conversations, Codex threads, Library files, your computer, and connected storage separately for material that should also be deleted.
- Control model improvement. On a personal plan, change the Improve the model for everyone setting in ChatGPT’s data controls if you do not want Dot conversations and work used for model improvement. This is a model-improvement choice, not a universal deletion switch.
- Set action approvals. Require confirmation for consequential actions and use Custom Rules to define what the Dot may do automatically. Keep read-only research separate from permissions to send, edit, or publish.
- Secure the account. Enable multi-factor authentication in account security settings. When a supported website sign-in is used, OpenAI says the secure sign-in form keeps credentials from being exposed to the model. That protection does not cover passwords that you separately paste into chat, upload in a document, or provide through a plugin.
Model improvement, operational access, and human review are different
Privacy settings answer different questions, so do not treat one toggle as a complete privacy policy.

OpenAI also says limited human review can occur in some circumstances, including safety-related cases, even when model improvement is turned off. Therefore, “not used for training” and “never seen by a human” are not interchangeable claims.
How OpenAI describes protection and its limits
OpenAI says content is encrypted while stored and while traveling between you, OpenAI, and service providers. Its documentation also describes layered safeguards such as plugin permissions, Custom Rules, automatic review for some planned actions, and safety monitoring.
These are OpenAI’s stated protections, not an independent security audit or a promise that an agent cannot fail. A Dot may misinterpret a request, retrieve the wrong permitted information, or make an incorrect action decision. Minimize permissions, require approvals for consequential operations, and avoid placing secrets in chat, documents, or plugins unless the task genuinely requires them.

Availability is account- and region-dependent
Dot access is being rolled out according to account plan, region, age, and other eligibility conditions. The Help Center guidance represented in the current rollout lists the following examples:

These launch details can change. Check your account’s current in-product notices and the latest OpenAI Help Center guidance before assuming that a feature, connected app, or messaging channel is available.
A simple way to decide whether to use a Dot for sensitive work
- Need audio, video, or screen context? Connect only the computer required for the task and grant only the specific permission needed.
- Need information from another service? Connect that service with the narrowest available scope, then disconnect it when finished.
- Need personalization? Decide whether the benefit justifies sharing with ChatGPT Memory, knowing that turning Memory off does not clear past Dot context.
- Need an external action? Keep research read-only and require an approval step before anything is sent, changed, or published.
- Finished with the Dot? Delete the Dot, then audit separate ChatGPT memories, conversations, threads, and files instead of assuming one deletion removes everything.
What the privacy model means in plain language
A ChatGPT Dot can hear only through an approved audio path, remember through both Dot context and ChatGPT Memory, and share only through permissions and services you have enabled. The controls operate at different layers: device permissions govern sensors, plugin settings govern connected services, Memory governs future cross-context sharing, Dot deletion governs the Dot’s own context, and data controls govern model-improvement use. Keeping those layers separate is the key to understanding what a Dot can access and what remains after you switch a feature off.
