Batch and continuous-flow chemistry do not have to be competing choices. A 2016 Cambridge report showed a single automated sequence assigning different operations to a round-bottom flask, a flow coil and a distillation column. The demonstration converted 2-hexanone into 5-methyl-4-propylthiophene-2-carboxylic acid, with reaction and workup steps handled in the mode judged most suitable for each task.
This was a specific research platform and proof-of-concept, not evidence that every synthesis should move to flow or that the apparatus remains a product you can buy today. The report’s value is its integration model: choose batch or flow step by step, then control the whole sequence as one process.
What “batch and flow” united means
In batch chemistry, reagents react in a vessel such as a flask. The materials are charged, mixed, heated or cooled, allowed to react, and then processed before the vessel is emptied. In flow chemistry, pumps feed reactants through a channel, tube or coil. Residence time, temperature, pressure and mixing are controlled while material moves continuously through the reactor.
The Cambridge work treated those approaches as complementary. Instead of converting an entire synthesis to flow, the chemist could keep a flask-based operation where it was practical and route another step through a continuous-flow module. Workup operations, including solvent changes, were part of the same automated sequence rather than an assumption that every stage had to be a reaction in a flow tube.

Chemistry World’s 14 October 2016 report describes the platform developed by Steve Ley and Daniel Fitzpatrick at the University of Cambridge. The Royal Society of Chemistry’s 2016 Reaction Chemistry & Engineering archive identifies their paper as D. E. Fitzpatrick and S. V. Ley, Reaction Chemistry & Engineering (2016), DOI 10.1039/C6RE00160B.
Batch remains useful
A flask can be the sensible choice when a reaction needs a particular stirring arrangement, a long hold, a heterogeneous mixture, a simple addition sequence or an operation that has not been adapted to a flow reactor. It also gives a chemist direct access to the contents for sampling, inspection or an unusual workup. The report does not claim that these advantages disappear when automation is introduced.
Flow adds controlled residence
A flow coil exposes a moving stream to a defined path and residence time. That arrangement can support tightly controlled heating or cooling and can reduce the amount of reactive material present at any one instant. The Cambridge report used flow as one available mode inside a larger sequence, not as a universal replacement for vessels.

The important change is at the sequence level. A multistep synthesis can contain a batch reaction, a flow reaction, a distillation or solvent exchange, and another batch operation without requiring a separate manual campaign for each. Automation coordinates those transitions after the system has been set up.

What the Cambridge platform contained
The apparatus combined familiar laboratory hardware with a modular flow reactor. The source says the reactor was commercially available at the category level but does not name a manufacturer or model, so the report should not be read as a specification for a particular instrument.
| Element | Function in the reported concept |
|---|---|
| Round-bottom flask | Provides a batch-reaction vessel for a step that is better handled in a conventional flask. |
| Flow coil | Provides a continuous path for a flow-based reaction or processing step under controlled conditions. |
| Distillation column | Supports separation and solvent-change operations within the multistep sequence. |
| Modular flow chemistry reactor | Forms the flow-chemistry foundation of the apparatus; the make and model are not identified in the report. |
| Automation and control | Coordinates batch, flow and workup modules so the sequence can proceed after setup with one researcher overseeing it. |
That combination matters because a conventional flow-only installation would not automatically provide a convenient way to perform every flask operation or solvent exchange. Adding a batch vessel and separation hardware lets the process follow the chemistry rather than forcing the chemistry to follow one reactor format.
The reported demonstration: from 2-hexanone to a thiophene acid
For its demonstration, the team prepared 5-methyl-4-propylthiophene-2-carboxylic acid starting from 2-hexanone. The route contained several synthetic steps as well as workup tasks, and it required solvent changes. Those details make the example more significant than a single reaction run: the apparatus had to move material through a sequence in which the operations were not all alike.
The report presents the route as one continuous phase after setup. A researcher managed the operation, while the platform handled the programmed transitions among the flask, flow coil and distillation column. “Continuous” here describes the configured process sequence; it does not mean that every individual reaction step was performed in flow or that the product was made indefinitely without replenishing reagents.

No yield comparison, throughput number, quantified labor saving, cost saving or benchmark against a batch-only or flow-only route is supplied in the cited coverage. The demonstration therefore supports a claim about integration and automation, not a numerical performance advantage.
How a hybrid sequence is organized
The report does not publish a general recipe for programming every possible synthesis. Its hardware and demonstration support a practical planning pattern:
- Map the chemistry step by step. Identify which transformations, holds, separations and solvent changes the route requires. Treat workup as part of the process design rather than as an unrecorded manual interval.
- Assign a mode to each operation. Keep a step in the round-bottom flask when vessel-based handling is the better fit. Assign a step to the flow coil when continuous residence and controlled thermal conditions are advantageous.
- Place separation where it is needed. Use the distillation column for the solvent-change or separation task specified by the route, so the next reaction receives material in the required medium.
- Connect the modules in sequence. The value of the platform comes from linking the modules and their controls, allowing material to move from one operation to the next without a separate manual campaign between every stage.
- Run under supervision after setup. The report says one researcher can manage the sequence once configured. That is an operating claim for this demonstration, not a guarantee that every route can be left unattended.
- Validate each transition. Before treating a route as routine, confirm that the intermediate remains stable during transfer, that the solvent change is complete enough for the next reaction, and that the chosen flow or batch conditions give the required conversion and selectivity.
Temperature, pressure and operating limits reported in 2016
| Parameter | Reported information | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | −70 °C to +150 °C | The operating range stated in the 2016 Chemistry World account of the system. |
| Pressure | High-pressure operation is described; no numerical rating is given. | Do not infer a maximum pressure, pressure class or safety limit from the phrase “high pressure.” |
| Sequence control | Batch, flow and workup operations can be combined after setup. | This is a description of the reported platform, not a current product specification. |
| Supervision | The sequence was managed by one researcher. | The statement concerns the demonstrated setup and should not be generalized to all syntheses. |
The temperature range is the only concrete operating envelope supplied by the cited report. Because pressure, flow rates, residence times, yields and cycle times are not provided, they cannot be used to compare this platform quantitatively with other equipment.
When should a step use batch or flow?
The hybrid idea is useful only if the choice is made for chemical and operational reasons. The report supports four decision axes rather than a universal ranking.

| Decision axis | Questions to ask | Likely implication |
|---|---|---|
| Reaction suitability | Does the reaction tolerate the available flow channel, mixing pattern, residence time and heat transfer? Is it one of the reactions that is not amenable to flow? | Use the flask for unsuitable or awkward transformations; use flow where continuous control is demonstrably compatible. |
| Workup and transfers | How many manual transfers, solvent exchanges or separations does the route require? | Integrating a distillation or other workup module can remove handoffs that would otherwise interrupt the sequence. |
| Need for continuous control | Would a defined residence time or continuous heating and cooling improve control? | Assign that operation to the flow coil when the chemistry benefits from it. |
| Automation burden | What sensors, pumps, valves, recipes and safeguards are needed to connect the modules? | A hybrid route may reduce routine handling, but it requires more planning and control integration than an isolated flask reaction. |
This framework also explains why “all flow” is not the same goal as “automated.” Automation can coordinate a batch operation, and a flow reactor can still require manual preparation, monitoring or downstream handling. The Cambridge platform sought to automate the sequence while preserving both modes.
What the report demonstrates—and what it does not
Supported by the demonstration
- Batch and flow can be assigned to different steps in one multistep synthesis.
- Workup operations such as solvent changes can be included in the same process architecture.
- A system combining a round-bottom flask, a flow coil and a distillation column can be operated as a configured sequence.
- The reported route converted 2-hexanone into 5-methyl-4-propylthiophene-2-carboxylic acid.
- The platform was developed by Steve Ley and Daniel Fitzpatrick at the University of Cambridge.
Not established by the available evidence
- That every synthetic route is suitable for flow or for hybrid automation.
- That the hybrid arrangement always gives higher yield, faster production, lower cost or safer operation.
- That it outperforms a carefully designed batch-only or flow-only process.
- That the 2016 apparatus is still commercially available, supported or sold in the same configuration.
- That the system has a published numerical pressure rating or a broad adoption record.
These boundaries are important when applying the idea to a modern laboratory. The article is a report of a particular platform and demonstration, not a systematic survey of process chemistry.

Reducing the discovery-to-scale discontinuity
Steve Ley described the motivation this way: “The system is designed to provide a more holistic understanding of synthesis practice, so that transition across boundaries moving from discovery to larger scale processes will be minimised.” The practical implication is a shared process vocabulary. Chemists can document not only reaction conditions but also transfers, solvent changes and separations in the same automated plan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChanging the usual either-or assumption
Andreas Kirschning of Leibniz University of Hannover commented: “What is usually regarded to represent two distinct synthetic philosophies has been turned upside down here.” His observation captures the conceptual shift: batch and flow are treated as modules that can cooperate, rather than as mutually exclusive identities for an entire laboratory.

Opening a path for other automated sequences
Thomas Wirth of Cardiff University said: “The control of combined multistep flow/batch sequences by an automated platform will surely be taken up by other researchers enabling novel, advanced target synthesis.” That is an expectation about research direction, not evidence of later adoption statistics. Any new implementation would still need route-specific validation, compatible hardware and a control strategy for abnormal events.
Expecting the platform to evolve
Ley also supplied a qualification that remains relevant to interpreting the 2016 work: “As with all new things, the system will have to evolve to increase versatility and autonomy, but with the availability of new microprocessor control chips and the inventive spirit of the chemist, this will happen.” In other words, the demonstration was an early platform on which future capability was expected to build, not a finished universal synthesis machine.
Practical checks before adopting the idea
A laboratory evaluating a hybrid batch-and-flow concept should answer these questions for its own route:
Recommended Free Tools
- Which transformations have evidence that they work at the intended flow rate, temperature and pressure?
- Which steps need a vessel, prolonged stirring, solids handling or direct sampling?
- What intermediate stability data support the time spent in tubing, reservoirs and transfer lines?
- Where will solvent changes, extractions, crystallizations or distillations occur?
- Can sensors detect blocked lines, empty reservoirs, temperature excursions or an off-specification intermediate before it reaches the next module?
- What is the safe response if a pump, valve, heater or controller fails?
- Which operations can genuinely run unattended, and which still require a researcher’s decision?
- How will samples, records and deviations be documented so the route can be reproduced at a larger scale?
These checks turn the Cambridge concept into an engineering decision without pretending that the 2016 report answered them for every chemistry.
Current-status qualification
The cited sources are from 2016. They identify the researchers, describe the apparatus and report the demonstration, but they do not establish a current commercial product, a manufacturer, a model number, a present-day service offering or broad industrial uptake. The platform’s basis in a commercially available modular flow reactor therefore indicates only the type of equipment used at the time; it is not a buying recommendation.
Bottom line
The lasting lesson of the Cambridge report is architectural: design the synthesis around the chemistry, then let batch vessels, flow reactors and workup modules each do the job they handle best. Its 2-hexanone demonstration shows that such a sequence can be automated as one coordinated process, while the missing performance statistics and current product information mean the result should be read as a focused 2016 proof of concept rather than a universal or commercially verified solution.
