A built-in DNS resolver is the software a system, application, or platform uses to turn a domain name into DNS information such as an IP address. It may only forward a query to another resolver, or it may be part of a larger service that performs recursion and caching. The phrase is not one standardized product name, so the exact behavior depends on where the resolver runs.
How built-in DNS resolution works
DNS resolution is a chain of roles, not necessarily a single built-in feature. On an end-user system, a local stub resolver commonly accepts a lookup request and sends it to another resolver. A recursive caching resolver can then follow the DNS hierarchy to obtain an answer, return that answer or an error, and cache the result for the record’s time to live (TTL). BIND’s documentation describes this distinction and notes that local stub resolvers are standard on end-user systems: BIND 9 documentation.
This distinction matters when a lookup fails or a DNS change appears delayed. The component receiving the application’s request may not be the component doing recursion, and a cached answer can remain available until its TTL expires. A system DNS change therefore does not necessarily describe every step or every cache involved.

| Component | Typical job | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Local stub resolver | Accepts a query from local software and forwards it to another resolver. | Which upstream resolver it is configured to contact. |
| Recursive caching resolver | Follows DNS referrals to obtain an answer, returns a result or error, and caches answers according to TTL. | Who operates it, what caching or policy applies, and whether the answer may still be cached. |
These are functional roles, not necessarily separate physical machines. A resolver’s name alone does not establish whether it performs recursion, forwards queries, or applies additional policy.

Can an application use a different DNS resolver?
Yes, some applications expose their own resolver configuration, which may be independent of system DNS settings. For example, Node.js provides a dns.Resolver object; setting DNS servers on that object does not change the configuration of other resolver instances. That behavior is specific to the documented Node.js API and should not be assumed for other runtimes or applications. See the Node.js DNS API.
When an application’s lookups differ from a browser, command-line tool, or other program, identify the resolver API and configuration that each one uses. Changing system DNS may not affect an application that explicitly configures its own resolver.

What “built-in DNS” means in Kubernetes
In Kubernetes, DNS is a cluster service, commonly provided by CoreDNS. The kubelet supplies DNS resolver information to containers, and administrators can customize CoreDNS behavior through a Corefile stored in a ConfigMap. This is cluster-level DNS configuration, not the same as changing a workstation’s local resolver.

How resolvers can describe their capabilities
RFC 9606, an IETF Standards Track document published in June 2024, defines RESINFO, a way for DNS resolvers to publish information about their capabilities. The RFC describes its purpose as: “This document specifies a method for DNS resolvers to publish information about themselves.” Clients retrieve the record directly from the resolver under the protocol rules in RFC 9606.
Optional attributes include qnamemin, which indicates support for QNAME minimisation, and exterr, which can list Extended DNS Error codes the resolver may return. The infourl attribute is for generic troubleshooting information, must use HTTPS, and is described as diagnostic information for IT staff rather than end users.

Capability declarations are useful signals, not proof that a resolver is trustworthy or that its claims have been independently verified. RFC 9606’s security considerations discuss authenticated secure connections, local DNSSEC validation, and resolver reputation when information cannot be validated. Treat advertised features as one input to evaluation, alongside how the resolver is operated and what protections apply.

- Position in the request path: Determine whether the resolver is local, application-specific, or a remote recursive service, and who operates it.
- Transport protection: Check whether client-to-resolver traffic can use encrypted transport; do not infer this from the phrase “built-in resolver.”
- Privacy behavior: Look for documented features such as QNAME minimisation and understand what capability advertisements do—and do not—prove.
- Filtering and transparency: If queries may be blocked or modified, check what policy applies and how the operator explains those outcomes.
- Configuration ownership: Establish whether settings belong to the operating system, a particular application, or a cluster administrator.
- Operational fit: Prefer the configuration that you can manage and troubleshoot in the environment where the lookups occur.
Common troubleshooting clues
- A DNS change is not visible yet: A recursive resolver may still have a cached answer until its TTL expires.
- One application behaves differently: It may use an independently configured resolver rather than the system’s resolver settings.
- A container has unexpected DNS behavior: Check the cluster’s DNS service and Kubernetes configuration rather than assuming the host’s resolver settings control the Pod.
- A resolver advertises a feature: Treat the announcement as a capability signal, not an assurance of security or trustworthiness.
