A Blu-ray player reads compatible optical discs and sends their video and audio to a television or sound system. A standard Blu-ray player handles Blu-ray discs at up to 1080p Full HD; playing 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs requires a player specifically labeled Ultra HD Blu-ray.

What is a Blu-ray player?

A Blu-ray player is a device with an optical drive and playback electronics that read data from Blu-ray discs. The Blu-ray Disc format was designed for high-definition audio-video and high-capacity data applications. Standard Blu-ray discs hold 25 GB on a single layer or 50 GB on a dual layer, according to the Blu-ray Disc Association.

The name refers to the blue laser used to read the disc. DVDs and CDs use a red laser; Blu-ray’s laser and lens design allow smaller, denser data pits. The format supports Full HD video up to 1080p and up to 7.1-channel uncompressed surround sound. These are format capabilities, not a guarantee that every movie or player uses them.

How Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray differ

Format What it supports What to know
DVD Standard-definition video Some players upscale the output for an HDTV, but upscaling does not add detail missing from the original disc.
Blu-ray Disc Full HD video up to 1080p Many Blu-ray players also play DVDs, but confirm the exact model and disc types.
Ultra HD Blu-ray Video up to 3840 × 2160 pixels, HDR, wider color capabilities, and support for immersive audio formats such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X It is a distinct disc format. A player must explicitly support Ultra HD Blu-ray to play these discs.

The Blu-ray Disc Association lists DVD capacity as 4.7 GB and Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray capacity as five to twenty times greater. Capacity helps accommodate the higher data volumes associated with HD and Ultra HD, but it does not by itself determine the quality of a particular film or disc.

Can a regular Blu-ray player play 4K discs?

No. A standard Blu-ray player is not the same as an Ultra HD Blu-ray player, and the word “Blu-ray” alone does not mean that a device can read 4K discs. If you own Ultra HD Blu-ray movies, choose a player explicitly labeled for that format. The Blu-ray Disc Association says Ultra HD Blu-ray players play current Blu-ray content; most also play DVDs.

To view a disc at its intended 4K resolution, the display must support 4K. HDR also depends on compatible support across the player, display, and relevant setup. An Ultra HD Blu-ray player can output a standard HD signal when connected to a current HDTV.

Which discs might a player support?

DVD playback is common on Blu-ray players, but support for CDs, recordable discs, and particular file formats varies by model. Sony’s disc compatibility guide lists supported media types for its players and notes that some compatibility depends on the model year. It also explains that copying a movie file onto a disc does not automatically create a properly authored disc that a player can play.

  • Check the exact model’s manual for the disc format you plan to use.
  • Look separately for support for recordable Blu-ray or DVD media, CDs, and computer-authored files.
  • Do not assume that support for a standard Blu-ray disc means support for an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc.

What to check before choosing or connecting a player

  1. Match the player to your discs. For ordinary Blu-ray movies, choose a Blu-ray Disc player. For 4K Ultra HD discs, choose an Ultra HD Blu-ray player.
  2. Check the display. A compatible 4K display is needed to see 4K resolution as intended. For HDR, confirm that both player and display support the intended HDR capability.
  3. Consider your audio equipment. If you want surround or object-based audio, check whether your receiver or sound system supports the format and can be used with the player.
  4. Verify secondary media. Consult the specific player manual if you also need DVD, CD, recordable-disc, or file playback.

DVD upscaling may make a standard-definition signal fit an HDTV and appear sharper than output from a basic DVD player. It cannot restore image information that was not on the DVD.
