A Bitcoin ATM scam is fraud that tricks someone into putting cash into a cryptocurrency ATM and sending the resulting cryptocurrency to a scammer. The machine is only the payment channel: the scammer’s deception, urgency, and instructions are what make it a scam. A machine called a Bitcoin ATM may also handle cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin.

How a Bitcoin ATM scam works

The scam often starts with an unexpected call, message, or computer pop-up. The person contacting you may claim there is suspicious activity, an unauthorized charge, a legal problem, or a security threat. They may pretend to represent a government agency, a business, or a technology company.

To make the story feel urgent, the scammer may say your money is at risk or that you are under investigation. They might tell you not to speak to anyone else and keep you on the phone while you withdraw cash and go to a nearby or specified machine. At the machine, they direct you to deposit the cash and scan a QR code. The code sends cryptocurrency to a wallet controlled by the scammer.

The story varies, but the pressure and payment demand are the key clues. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) identifies government impersonation, business impersonation, and tech-support scams among the common approaches.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Why would someone send you to a Bitcoin ATM?

A scammer uses the ATM to turn cash into cryptocurrency and route it to a wallet they control. The claim that this will protect your money, fix an account problem, pay a government fee, or keep you out of legal trouble is the pretext—not a legitimate way to secure funds or resolve an issue.

The FTC’s warning is direct: “Go to a Bitcoin ATM” is a scam. Nobody legitimate will insist that you get cryptocurrency of any kind. A legitimate business or government agency will not direct you to use a Bitcoin ATM to protect your money or solve a problem.

Warning signs to recognize

  • A demand to use a Bitcoin ATM: Someone says to deposit cash or buy cryptocurrency to protect your money, resolve an account issue, pay a government fee, or avoid legal trouble.
  • Urgency or secrecy: The person insists you act immediately, stay on the phone, or keep the situation secret.
  • An unexpected request to withdraw cash: A caller or message tells you to take money out of your bank account and send it through a machine.
  • Instructions supplied by the person contacting you: They give you a phone number, link, or QR code and tell you to use it to address the supposed problem.

What to do before sending money

  1. Stop. Do not withdraw cash, scan the QR code, or send cryptocurrency because of an unexpected call or message.
  2. End the contact and verify independently. Find the bank, company, or agency’s contact details through a source you already trust, then ask whether there is a real problem. Do not rely on a number, link, or QR code provided by the person pressuring you.
  3. Talk to someone you trust. The FTC advises slowing down and checking with another person before acting. A legitimate problem can be verified without following a stranger’s payment instructions.

Bitcoin ATM scam losses reported to the FTC

In an August 2024 Consumer Protection Data Spotlight, the FTC estimated that reported losses involving Bitcoin ATM fraud rose nearly tenfold from 2020 to 2023, reaching more than $110 million in 2023. The FTC also estimated more than $65 million in reported losses in the first half of 2024, with a median reported loss of $10,000 for that period.

For the first half of 2024, adults aged 60 and over were more than three times as likely as younger adults to report a Bitcoin ATM loss. Older adults accounted for more than two of every three dollars reported lost through these machines during that period.

These are FTC estimates based on Consumer Sentinel Network reports and analysis of report narratives. They describe reported losses for the stated periods, not all losses or a current annual total. The FTC says fraud is underreported, so actual harm is likely greater.

What to do if you already sent money

  1. Contact the ATM operator or cryptocurrency exchange immediately. Explain that the transaction was fraudulent and ask whether it can be reversed and the money refunded.
  2. Report the scam to the FTC. Use ReportFraud.ftc.gov to submit a report.

Recovery may be difficult: cryptocurrency payments do not have the same legal protections as credit and debit card payments. Contacting the operator or exchange quickly is still important because it gives them the opportunity to tell you whether any action is possible.
