A 71% Steam rating means that roughly 71% of the reviews included in the displayed score recommend the game. It is a measure of reviewer sentiment, not a 0–100 quality grade and not a 71% probability that you will enjoy the game. Treat it as a screening signal, then check the review count, recent sentiment, recurring complaints and your own priorities.
What the 71% actually measures
Steam calculates its displayed score from the share of counted reviews that are positive. At 71%, positive recommendations outnumber negative reviews by a noticeable margin, but the figure still describes what reviewers said, not an objective measurement of graphics, design, value or fun.
If 1,000 reviews were included, a 71% score would represent about 710 positive and 290 negative reviews. If only 100 reviews were counted, it would represent about 71 positive and 29 negative reviews. Those examples have the same percentage but very different evidential weight. The number of reviews next to the percentage is therefore as important as the percentage itself.

Is 71% positive good on Steam?
It is more positive than negative, but it is not an automatic buy recommendation. A game at 71% has enough approval to show that many players found it worthwhile, while a substantial minority did not. The practical question is why each group reached its conclusion.
Seventy-one percent is also close to a boundary Valve discussed in a 2016 explanation of Steam’s review categories. Valve gave the example that moving from 69% to 70% positive could change the displayed category wording. That historical example shows that a one-point change can alter a label near a threshold; it does not provide a complete, current table of every category threshold. Do not treat the word attached to 71% as a precise grade.
Two games with the same 71% score can be radically different purchases. One might have excellent mechanics but frequent crashes; another might run reliably but contain aggressive monetization. The percentage cannot tell you which trade-off you are accepting.
Check how much evidence supports the score
Review count and stability
Read the total review count beside the score before drawing a conclusion. A small early sample can swing several percentage points when a few dozen players change their recommendation. A score supported by thousands of reviews is usually less sensitive to individual votes, although it can still change after a major update or controversy.
There is no universal number that makes a rating trustworthy. Instead, ask whether the count is large enough for the game’s age and audience. A recently released niche title may have a small but useful sample; a game that has been available for years with very few reviews deserves more caution. Record both the percentage and count when comparing games, rather than comparing percentages alone.
Why a visible review is not always part of the score
Steam says reviews from accounts that purchased the game on Steam and played it count toward the review score. Other reviews may remain visible on the store page without contributing to the aggregate. This means the set of comments you can read is not necessarily identical to the set used to calculate 71%.

Look for whether a review is marked as a Steam purchase and consider the context of comments that are not counted. They may still reveal technical problems or community reactions, but they should not be treated as additional votes in the displayed percentage.
Compare the lifetime score with Recent Reviews
What Recent Reviews represents
Steam’s Recent Reviews figure is the percentage of positive reviews from the previous 30 days when enough reviews exist in that window and the game has been available for at least 45 days. It is intended to show the current direction of sentiment rather than the entire history of the product.
A lifetime score of 71% with a much higher Recent Reviews score can indicate that patches, fixes or new content improved the experience. The reverse pattern can signal a damaging update, server trouble, a change in monetization or a shrinking multiplayer population. Neither score is automatically superior: a temporary launch problem can depress Recent Reviews, while an old lifetime score can conceal current conditions.
How to read the two numbers together
| Lifetime score | Recent score | What to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| 71% | Higher than 71% | Read recent praise for fixes, added content and improved performance; verify that the improvements affect the way you plan to play. |
| 71% | Lower than 71% | Look for recent patches, outages, balance changes, monetization changes or population decline. |
| 71% | About the same | The long-term consensus appears broadly consistent; focus on the specific reasons reviewers give. |
| 71% | Not shown or too small a sample | Do not infer a trend. Read dated reviews and check the game’s update history and support status. |
Steam’s 30-day and 45-day conditions mean that a missing Recent Reviews signal is not proof that the game is stable or unstable. It may simply lack enough qualifying reviews or be too new.
Read the reasons behind the percentage
Open a sample of recent positive and negative reviews instead of relying on the headline score. Sort or filter for recent comments, then note complaints and praise that appear repeatedly. One dramatic anecdote is less useful than a pattern reported by many players.

Technical reliability
Look for specific reports about crashes, stuttering, long loading times, controller support, ultrawide displays, save corruption and problems on hardware similar to yours. A 71% score may be acceptable if the recurring issue affects a feature you never use; it may be a deal-breaker if it affects the game’s only mode.

Gameplay and content
Identify whether positive reviews praise the loop you want: exploration, competitive matches, story missions, construction, simulation or cooperative play. Negative reviews may describe repetition, weak progression, balance problems or missing features. Check whether those criticisms concern the first hours or become noticeable only after dozens of hours.
Business model and value
Reviewers can be reacting to the asking price, downloadable content, cosmetic sales, subscriptions, refunds or a change in the business model. Compare those complaints with the price you would pay and the amount of content you expect. A player who wants a one-time purchase may judge the same monetization differently from someone comfortable with ongoing live-service spending.
Online population and community behavior
For multiplayer games, check comments about matchmaking times, server regions, moderation and peak-period population. A generally positive lifetime score cannot guarantee that a smaller community will still support the modes you want at the times you play.
Recent updates
Pay attention to the dates of both praise and criticism. A review written before a major patch may describe a version you will never encounter, while a new negative wave may follow a change that is still being addressed. Use the update notes and several dated reviews to distinguish a lasting problem from a short-lived incident.
Understand language-specific scores
Steam can show a score based on the viewer’s primary language for some qualifying games. Valve’s August 18, 2025 update says this can apply when a game has more than 2,000 publicly visible reviews and at least 200 reviews written in one language. When Steam generates this view, it displays the score for the viewer’s primary language by default.
The language breakdown matters when translation quality, regional servers, customer support or cultural context affects the experience. Valve notes that one language can show a more positive score while another shows a more negative score for the same game. If the number on your store page seems inconsistent with reviews you are reading, check the language selector and compare like with like.

The thresholds above are requirements Valve gave for generating this feature; they are not a claim that every game meeting them will display a separate score in every language.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse 71% as a personal-fit filter
A rating becomes useful when you translate the recurring feedback into your own decision. Make a short list of requirements before you read deeply:
- Genre and preferred play style.
- Single-player, cooperative or competitive multiplayer needs.
- Operating system, graphics hardware, display and controller requirements.
- Tolerance for bugs, grinding, repetition, live-service changes or paid add-ons.
- Whether you plan to play at launch, after patches or only when the price falls.
Then classify each repeated complaint as acceptable, uncertain or disqualifying. This prevents a popular feature from outweighing a problem that directly affects you. For example, strong reviews of a game’s combat do not offset reports of a broken co-op mode if co-op is your primary reason for buying.
A practical buying workflow
- Record the complete signal. Write down the 71% lifetime score, the total review count and the exact category wording shown on your store page.
- Check Recent Reviews. Compare the past-30-day percentage with the lifetime figure, noting whether Steam says the recent sample is available.
- Check the language view. If Steam offers a language-specific score, select the language relevant to you and inspect the breakdown when translation or regional online play matters.
- Read targeted positives. Find several recent positive reviews and extract the concrete features they praise, not just their overall recommendation.
- Read targeted negatives. Look for repeated, specific complaints about performance, content, balance, monetization, support or multiplayer population.
- Match evidence to your setup. Compare technical reports with your hardware and compare online reports with your region and usual play times.
- Check the price and return policy. Decide whether the current price compensates for the risks you identified and whether you can use the platform’s applicable refund rules if the game fails to meet your requirements.
- Choose a risk level. Buy now when the recurring drawbacks are acceptable, wait for a patch or sale when the evidence is mixed, and skip when a repeated problem conflicts with a non-negotiable requirement.
Comparing two games that both show 71%
The aggregate percentage cannot decide between equal-looking ratings. Compare the underlying evidence in a consistent order:
| Comparison | Questions to ask | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Review volume | Which game has the larger, older and more stable sample? | A similar percentage backed by very different counts does not carry the same confidence. |
| Recent versus lifetime | Is either game’s current trend sharply higher or lower? | It can reveal whether patches, outages or policy changes altered the experience. |
| Language sentiment | Does either game show a different score in your primary language? | Translation and regional online conditions may affect your experience. |
| Recurring praise | Which game’s strengths match the activities you actually want? | A highly praised feature has little value if you will not use it. |
| Recurring complaints | Are the same problems technical, design-related or business-related? | The type and severity of a drawback matter more than its presence alone. |
| Personal constraints | Which fits your hardware, play mode, schedule and acceptable price? | These factors are not represented in Steam’s aggregate score. |
Common mistakes when interpreting 71%
Treating it as a quality grade
Steam’s percentage is not an exam mark. It does not mean the game is “71 out of 100” in every dimension, and it does not rank games on a common quality scale.
Reading it as your probability of enjoyment
Seventy-one percent of reviewers recommending a game does not mean you have a 71% chance of enjoying it. Your hardware, genre preferences, tolerance for flaws and intended play mode may differ from the reviewing population.

Ignoring the denominator
A percentage without the review count hides whether the result is based on a small launch sample or a large, long-running consensus. Always read both values.
Assuming every visible review counts
Only eligible Steam-purchase reviews contribute to the score according to Steam. Uncounted comments can still provide context, but they do not change the displayed percentage.
Assuming the label has a universal fixed threshold
Valve’s 2016 69%-versus-70% example demonstrates boundary sensitivity, not a complete current chart of category cutoffs. A label near a boundary should not outweigh the written evidence.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Using store visibility as a buying signal
Steamworks documentation says review score is not a factor in algorithmic visibility while a game is Mixed or above (40% or higher); below 40%, it is less likely to be featured. That describes store exposure, not whether a 71% game is worth your money.
Bottom line for a prospective buyer
Interpret 71% as “a modestly positive community signal with meaningful reservations,” not as a verdict. Confirm how many reviews produce the number, compare the lifetime and Recent Reviews figures, check any language-specific view, and read dated comments for patterns that matter to your hardware, play style and budget. Buy when the recurring weaknesses are acceptable to you; wait or skip when they conflict with the reason you want the game.
