A 500-megawatt (MW) data center represents 500 MW of demand at whatever boundary the label describes. If that is a continuous, facility-level load, the arithmetic is 500 MW × 8,760 hours = 4,380,000 megawatt-hours, or 4.38 terawatt-hours (TWh), per year. That is an annualization, not proof that every facility draws its maximum every hour. Whether a particular grid can serve the project depends on its location, interconnection, ramp schedule, generation, transmission, reliability requirements and contractual commitments.
Start with the definition: what does the 500 MW measure?
“500 MW data center” is not a complete electrical specification. The number may describe the computing equipment, the entire facility, a requested grid connection or a maximum contractual demand. Those quantities are related but cannot be substituted without project-specific assumptions.
Power is not the same as energy
MW measures the rate of electricity use at a moment or over a stated interval. MWh measures electricity consumed over time. A 500 MW load uses 500 MWh in one hour. If it stayed at exactly 500 MW for all 8,760 hours of a 365-day year, it would consume 4,380,000 MWh, or 4.38 TWh.
Real facilities move above and below their nominal level. Server utilization, cooling conditions, maintenance, commissioning and backup operation all affect the hourly profile. A planning document should therefore show an hourly or seasonal forecast, not only an MW headline.

Four common meanings of “500 MW”
| Label | What it measures | Why the distinction matters |
|---|---|---|
| IT load | Power delivered to servers, storage and networking equipment | Total utility demand is higher because cooling, power conversion, pumps, lighting and other building systems also consume electricity. |
| Whole-facility demand | Combined IT and facility systems at the site boundary | This is closer to the load a utility must serve, but the boundary and operating conditions still need to be stated. |
| Maximum or contracted demand | A peak level used in a service agreement or design case | A maximum is not an assurance that the site will draw that amount continuously. |
| Interconnection request | Capacity the customer asks the grid to make available | Requested capacity may be phased, reserved or larger than the initial energized load. |
Before comparing projects, ask which of these definitions applies, whether the target is phased and how much capacity is requested at each energization stage. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) notes that data-center demand is often continuous but varies by region and application.
How large is 500 MW compared with recent data-center growth?
Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) staff reported that the average data center entering service grew from about 25 MW in 2020 to almost 80 MW in 2025. A 500 MW proposal is therefore several times that recent average. The comparison indicates why a project can become a major local planning issue; it is not a technical maximum or a prediction about any individual facility.
National statistics provide context but cannot determine whether a specific substation has room. DOE’s account of a 2024 Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) report puts U.S. data-center electricity use at about 4.4% of total electricity in 2023. The same report gives an approximately 6.7% to 12% range for 2028. Those figures describe a national forecast range for a stated horizon, not the share attributable to one 500 MW site.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) AEO2026 analysis treats server load as essentially flat across hours and projects 446 to 818 billion kilowatt-hours of server electricity use in 2050 across its scenarios. That range concerns servers, not all facility electricity and not a named 500 MW project. EIA also reports that U.S. electricity demand grew about 1.7% per year from 2020 through 2025, versus 0.1% per year from 2005 through 2019, with data centers among the contributors to the recent increase.
Can the grid handle a 500 MW data center?
There is no national yes-or-no answer. Only a defined load request and local studies can establish whether a site is serviceable, what reinforcements are needed and when they could be built. A region may have abundant annual generation but still lack transmission capacity, substation capability or deliverable power at the project’s point of interconnection during a contingency or seasonal peak.
Study the point of interconnection and network limits
Utilities and grid operators examine the proposed point of interconnection, nearby substations, transmission and distribution equipment, thermal limits, voltage performance and contingency cases. They also assess regional resource adequacy and the timing of planned upgrades. FERC has warned that very large facilities may require new generation or transmission infrastructure; EIA describes interconnection review as the process used to assess large loads and new generating resources against available supply and network capability.

Check generation, reserves and seasonal conditions
A continuous load consumes energy in every season and can raise the need for operating reserves. Planners test normal operation, generator or line outages, extreme weather, seasonal peaks and transmission constraints. A project that appears manageable in an annual energy balance can still create a shortfall during a stressed hour if power cannot be delivered locally.
FERC’s 2025 summer assessment said margins were tightening as load increased, largely because of hyperscale users, and identified possible tight availability in several regions under its stated conditions. That was a dated seasonal outlook, not a universal finding about every region or every current project.
Separate an announcement from a dependable load forecast
Planning depends on when a facility will energize and how likely each phase is to proceed. FERC emphasizes accurate estimates of whether and when projects will enter service. A public announcement, a signed service agreement, a financial commitment and an energized stage represent different levels of certainty.

A practical planning sequence for a 500 MW proposal
- Define the electrical boundary. State whether 500 MW is IT load, whole-facility demand, a peak, a contracted amount or an interconnection request. Provide power-factor assumptions, expected auxiliary load and the initial versus ultimate phases.
- Specify the ramp. List the requested energization date and each incremental block. A single-step 500 MW request creates a different infrastructure and reliability problem from ten 50 MW stages.
- Run local interconnection studies. Evaluate the point of interconnection, substation and line capacity, voltage, thermal limits, contingency performance and regional transmission effects. Identify which upgrades are required before each stage can operate.
- Test supply and reliability. Model generation availability, operating reserves, seasonal peaks, outage conditions and deliverability. Include the facility’s backup generation and its behavior during grid disturbances, without assuming backup equipment automatically supplies normal grid needs.
- Quantify flexibility. Identify workloads that can be shifted, curtailed or scheduled around system conditions. Evaluate storage, efficiency measures and demand-response commitments with measurable duration, notice and performance requirements.
- Assign costs and obligations from actual records. Review the utility or transmission provider’s tariff, study agreement, construction schedule, security requirements and regulatory decisions. Determine who funds each upgrade and what happens if a forecast phase is delayed or canceled.
- Update the forecast as evidence changes. Replace announcement-level assumptions with application, permitting, financing and construction milestones. Re-run studies when the load size, schedule or operating profile changes.
Which planning options can meet the demand?
DOE describes a portfolio rather than a single solution. The appropriate mix depends on the site, timing and reliability standard.
Efficiency and a lower facility load
More efficient servers, power conversion, cooling and building controls reduce the generation and network capacity needed for a given computing output. Efficiency changes should be represented as an explicit reduction in the facility load forecast, with the operating conditions and verification method stated.
Demand-side flexibility
Some computing jobs can be scheduled for periods with more available power, while other workloads require uninterrupted service. A useful flexibility plan specifies the amount of reducible load, response time, maximum event duration, recovery behavior and the conditions under which the customer will participate. A vague promise to “be flexible” cannot substitute for a reliability study.
Generation and storage
New generation, batteries or other storage can supply energy, reserves or ramping support. Their value depends on duration, fuel or charging availability, interconnection limits and performance during the exact hours the grid is constrained. On-site generation may reduce net grid demand in some operating modes but does not by itself eliminate the need to study interconnection, emissions, fuel supply and outage behavior.

Transmission and distribution expansion
Network upgrades may include substation work, new circuits, reconductoring, protection changes or higher-voltage transmission. Construction lead times, permitting and equipment availability can make these projects the schedule-critical path even when the customer is ready to build.
Proactive planning and tariffs
Utilities and regulators can use staged commitments, deposits, minimum-take obligations, milestone tests or special tariffs to align infrastructure investment with the probability that a large load will materialize. The applicable treatment is jurisdiction-specific. FERC’s large-load proceedings show federal attention to interconnection rules but do not establish one settled cost formula for every 500 MW project.
How to compare two 500 MW proposals
Use identical definitions and evidence for both projects. A side-by-side comparison should include at least these fields:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Load measure | Is the figure IT load, total facility demand, peak request or contracted grid capacity? |
| Schedule and ramp | When is first energization, how large is each stage and what evidence supports completion? |
| Location and headroom | What is the point of interconnection, which network elements are constrained and what upgrades are required? |
| Reliability exposure | How do seasonal peaks, reserves and contingency events affect each proposal? |
| Flexibility and efficiency | What load can be curtailed or shifted, and what efficiency, storage or demand-response commitments are enforceable? |
| Cost and accountability | Which tariff applies, who funds upgrades, what commitments secure the investment and how is forecast error handled? |
These questions organize a review; they do not replace the utility, transmission-provider or regulator’s engineering and commercial records.
What the 500 MW number cannot tell you by itself
- It cannot establish annual consumption unless the load duration or a continuous-load assumption is provided. The 4.38 TWh figure is arithmetic for an unvarying 500 MW facility-level load.
- It cannot reveal the required grid upgrades. Those depend on the site, voltage level, network topology, contingencies and project schedule.
- It cannot determine who pays. Cost allocation follows the applicable tariff, contracts, regulatory decisions and engineering studies.
- It cannot prove a universal generation requirement. Local surplus, regional transfers, storage and staged construction can produce very different solutions.
- It cannot support a household-equivalent comparison. The reviewed official material does not provide a directly sourced household statistic for one specific 500 MW data center.
- It cannot predict customer-rate effects. Any effect depends on the utility’s investment, cost recovery, contracts and regulatory treatment.
The bottom line for grid planners and readers
At a defined boundary, 500 MW is a very large, concentrated and potentially continuous electricity demand. Under a constant facility-load assumption it equals 4.38 TWh per year, but that calculation should never be mistaken for a project forecast. The meaningful planning work is local: define the load, verify the ramp, study the interconnection and reliability cases, quantify flexibility, and assign upgrade responsibilities using the governing tariff and project records. Until those facts are available, “can the grid handle it?” remains a conditional question rather than a national yes or no.
