When uranium trichloride (UCl3) melts, its uranium–chlorine bonding does not simply become uniformly covalent. A 2024 study found a heterogeneous liquid structure: some short-lived U–Cl contacts show greater electron sharing and uranium 5f orbital participation, while longer interactions remain more ionic.
What changes when UCl3 melts?
The study reports that the average uranium–chlorine distance shrinks as solid UCl3 becomes liquid. In the melt, uranium ions have a varied coordination environment rather than one uniform set of equivalent contacts. The authors describe shorter, transient U–Cl contacts alongside longer interactions.
The shorter contacts are associated with increased covalent character: electrons are shared more strongly, with greater participation from uranium’s 5f valence orbitals than in the solid-state comparison. The longer interactions are described as more ionic. “Transient” matters here: the short contacts occur within a changing liquid structure, not as permanent bonds in a stable molecular arrangement. The result is therefore a mixture of interaction types, not a claim that molten UCl3 becomes wholly covalent.

How the liquid compares with solid UCl3
| Feature | Solid reference state | Molten state |
|---|---|---|
| U–Cl distance | EXAFS-fitted average of 2.909(9) Å, reported for solid UCl3. | The study reports shrinkage in the average distance on melting; the solid-state figure is not a molten-state measurement. |
| Coordination | Nine chloride neighbors around each uranium(III) center in a tricapped trigonal-prismatic structure. | Heterogeneous coordination, with short transient contacts as well as longer interactions. |
| Bonding interpretation | Reference for comparison with the liquid. | Short contacts show enhanced electron sharing and U 5f participation; longer interactions are more ionic. |
The 2.909(9) Å value describes the solid, not the melt. It is useful as a reference for the reported change, but it should not be read as the liquid’s average U–Cl distance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What evidence supports transient covalency?
The authors combined neutron-scattering evidence with ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations and chemical-bonding analyses. The computational analyses, including orbital projections and related electronic-structure measures, were used to examine how the shorter and longer contacts differ and to support the interpretation of greater U 5f involvement in the short contacts.
The paper also discusses a simulated Raman spectrum as a way to investigate whether transient coordination features might be distinguishable spectroscopically. That spectrum was computed; it was not an experimental Raman measurement of molten UCl3. The authors report that attempts to obtain experimental Raman results for the melt were unsuccessful because the sample strongly self-absorbed the signal.

What the result does—and does not—establish
The finding is specific to UCl3 and its solid-to-molten transition. It does not establish that uranium compounds generally become more covalent when heated, or that every U–Cl interaction in the liquid has the same character. Nor does the study demonstrate reactor performance or recommend a nuclear-fuel or waste-handling process. It is a fundamental bonding study relevant to research on liquid nuclear fuels and radioactive-waste handling.
