A 10GbE managed switch can speed up local transfers only when the devices at both ends, their storage, and the network configuration can use the faster connection. It does not upgrade slower device ports or increase internet speed by itself. Because no measurements or specific home setup are established here, there is no honest before-and-after result to report; the sections below explain what can get faster and how to identify it in your own network.
What a 10GbE switch can speed up
The most plausible improvement is copying files across a local network—for example, between a 10GbE-equipped workstation and a NAS, or between two workstations. A 10GbE switch makes that link rate possible; the actual copy speed depends on both endpoints and the rest of the data path. QNAP’s networking guide illustrates a 10GbE switch connecting NAS devices and workstations, but it is not a benchmark of any particular home setup.
A faster link matters when the old network connection was the limiting factor. If a disk, NAS processor, adapter, driver, or software setting is limiting the transfer, changing the switch alone may produce little or no improvement. Synology’s slow-transfer guidance recommends checking network status and settings on both the client and NAS.

A switch handles traffic within the local network. It cannot make an internet connection faster than the service and router or gateway path can deliver. The internet-facing link and endpoint capabilities matter too, as explained in TP-Link’s overview of multi-gig internet.

- 𝐅𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝟏𝟎𝐆𝐛𝐩𝐬 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠-𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: 5× 10-Gigabit ports unlock the highest performance with 10G/multi-gig bandwidth and provide up to 100 Gbps of switching capacity.
- 𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐨-𝐍𝐞𝐠𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Auto-negotiation intelligently senses the link speeds and adjusts between 5-speeds (100Mb/1G/2.5G/5G/10G) for compatibility and optimal performance for all your devices, including 2.5G/5G/10G WiFi 6 AP, 10G NAS, 10G PCIe Adapter/NIC, 10G Server, gaming computer, 8K video, and more.
- 𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐞𝐭: IEEE 802.3X flow control provides reliable data transfer and a fanless design ensures quiet operation.
- 𝐏𝐥𝐮𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲: Easy setup with no software installation or configuration needed.
- 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐲 𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐞: Durable metal casing and desktop/wall-mounting design are well-suited for different environments.
Web browsing, gaming, and downloads may therefore feel unchanged after a local switch upgrade. They may not need much bandwidth, or their performance may be limited by the internet service, remote server, Wi-Fi link, or another part of the path rather than the switch.
What must be in place for a faster local copy
- Compatible links at both ends: A device with a slower network port does not become a 10GbE device when connected to a 10GbE switch. Check the NAS and computer interfaces and the rate each link actually negotiates.
- Enough storage and processing capacity: The source and destination storage, device performance, drivers, and transfer configuration can all constrain application throughput.
- A suitable switch path: Confirm that the relevant devices connect through ports and links capable of the intended rate. A fast switch uplink does not make slower endpoint links faster.
- Compatible cabling and sound terminations: For 10GBASE-T over copper, NETGEAR’s support documentation says Cat 6A or better is required for runs up to 100 meters (328 feet). It also describes Cat 6 as usable up to 45 meters in its cited context. Treat those as vendor guidance; check the installed cable, length, and terminations rather than assuming a cable must be replaced. See NETGEAR’s cabling guidance.
For example, upgrading only the switch while leaving a NAS on a slower interface does not create a 10GbE path from that NAS to a workstation. A compatible network adapter may be needed, but verify support for the exact NAS model and operating system first. Synology’s E10G30-T2 product page identifies one 10GbE adapter intended for Synology systems; it is not a universal compatibility recommendation.

How to tell what actually got faster
Compare the same transfer before and after the upgrade, changing as little else as possible. Record the endpoints, direction, file or workload, measurement method, negotiated link rates, storage media, and any network or software changes. Without those details, a speed difference cannot reliably be attributed to the switch.
- Record the old path and the new path, including switch, router or gateway, NAS, workstation, and the network interfaces used.
- Check the negotiated link rate on each relevant connection. Do not treat a switch’s advertised port speed as proof that the endpoints negotiated that rate.
- Use the same source and destination, transfer direction, file or workload, and measurement method for both comparisons.
- Note the storage media and any configuration changes. A change in disks, caching, protocol settings, or software can affect results independently of the switch.
- Check endpoint and NAS network status and settings if transfers remain slow; Synology’s troubleshooting steps provide a starting point.
If no comparable measurements are available, describe only the observed tasks that changed or stayed the same. Do not assign a speed gain to the switch without evidence that distinguishes it from other changes.

What managed-switch features do—and don’t—prove
Features such as VLANs, QoS, IGMP snooping, and link aggregation can help organize a network or serve particular traffic needs. Their presence does not establish that a single-device file copy will be faster. NETGEAR’s switch datasheet describes examples of managed features, but it is an older product document, not a current model recommendation.
Link aggregation and SMB Multichannel can increase aggregate throughput in supported configurations, as depicted in QNAP’s guide. Whether they help depends on device support, configuration, and workload; do not assume aggregation makes one ordinary transfer flow faster.
Quick Recap
Choose upgrades by the bottleneck, not the headline speed
- Check whether your devices use copper RJ45 or SFP+ and whether their existing interfaces match the switch.
- Count the ports and link speeds needed for the NAS, workstations, router, and access points.
- Confirm that the exact NAS model and operating system support any adapter you plan to add.
- Check cable category, run length, terminations, and negotiated link rates before replacing cabling.
- Decide whether you need managed features such as VLANs or link aggregation for a specific purpose.
- Consider storage and workload limits: upgrading the network cannot eliminate a bottleneck elsewhere in the transfer path.
