200 Gigabit Ethernet (200GbE) is Ethernet with a 200 Gb/s MAC data rate. The term describes the Ethernet rate, not a particular cable, optical module, connector, or link distance. The physical-layer implementation (PHY) determines how a specific 200GbE link carries data.

What does 200GbE mean?

200GbE is Ethernet operating at a 200 gigabits-per-second rate at the media access control (MAC) layer. IEEE 802.3bs-2017 specifies MAC parameters, physical-layer specifications, and management parameters for Ethernet frame transfer at 200 Gb/s and 400 Gb/s. Its project objectives call for full-duplex operation and preservation of the Ethernet frame format. IEEE 802.3bs-2017

In practical terms, 200GbE retains the familiar IEEE 802.3 Ethernet frame format. The PHY below the MAC determines how those frames travel across a particular medium. IEEE 802.3bs-2017 IEEE 802.3-2022

What does the 200 Gb/s figure describe?

The 200 Gb/s figure is the Ethernet MAC data rate. It is not a guarantee that an application will transfer files at 200 gigabits per second: the number describes the link’s Ethernet rate, not application throughput. Nor does it specify the physical connection by itself. A 200GbE port needs a compatible PHY and physical medium to form a working link.

Which standards define 200GbE?

IEEE 802.3bs-2017

This amendment defines MAC, PHY, and management parameters for 200 Gb/s and 400 Gb/s Ethernet. The IEEE task force records IEEE-SA Standards Board approval on December 6, 2017. IEEE 802.3bs-2017

IEEE 802.3-2022

The consolidated Ethernet standard describes a common MAC specification alongside speed-specific interfaces and PHYs. It covers media that include coaxial cable, twisted pair, fiber, and electrical backplanes, and Ethernet operation through 400 Gb/s. IEEE 802.3-2022

IEEE 802.3ck-2022

This amendment adds electrical-interface PHY specifications for 100, 200, and 400 Gb/s based on 100 Gb/s signaling. It is one part of the 200GbE interface landscape; it does not mean every 200GbE connection uses this electrical implementation. IEEE 802.3ck-2022

  • At least 2 km over single-mode fiber.
  • At least 10 km over single-mode fiber.
  • At least 500 m over four-lane parallel single-mode fiber.

These are project objectives for supported PHY specifications, not a promise that every 200GbE port or PHY supports each distance. The final PHY determines its supported medium and reach. IEEE 802.3bs project objectives

Single-mode fiber is one relevant cable category for compatible optical 200GbE implementations, but specifying that cable alone does not establish compatibility. The endpoints, PHY, optical modules, connectors, and required distance must all match.

How do you check whether two 200GbE ports are compatible?

Compare the complete link, rather than relying on the 200GbE label alone:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the PHY standard supported by each port.
  2. Match the medium, such as a compatible optical-fiber or electrical implementation.
  3. Confirm reach and physical components, including supported distance, optical modules, and connector requirements.
  4. Verify interoperability for the specific ports and components at both ends.

IEEE standards describe the range of PHYs and media, but compatibility depends on the specifications for the actual devices and components. Check those details for both endpoints before selecting a link.
