Check Settings > Windows Update first. If Windows lists an update, the page—not the pop-up wording—is the supported place to review and install it. The phrase has appeared in a Windows 11 user report, but that report and a community advisor’s opinion do not prove that every pop-up using it is genuine.

Does the message mean the pop-up is official?

Not by itself. A Windows 11 user reported a prompt saying, “Windows is continuously improving, and updates are a normal part of keeping it running smoothly. We’ll restart and install this update at 9:42 AM. Or, you can restart now if you’re ready,” with “Restart now,” “Another time,” and “OK” buttons. That is a user’s transcription in a Microsoft Q&A post, not a general Microsoft confirmation of every matching message. Microsoft Q&A, April 15, 2024

In that thread, a Microsoft Independent Advisor said the reported prompt sounded like an official notification and was usually associated with a feature update. That is community advice, not an official authentication of the prompt on your device. Microsoft Q&A response

Check Windows Update without relying on the pop-up

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Review whether Windows lists an available update. If you want to check for updates, select Check for updates.
  3. If an update is offered, Microsoft’s guidance is to select Download & install and restart if prompted. Microsoft Support: Install Windows updates

If Windows Update does not show a corresponding update, the available reports do not establish why that particular message appeared. Don’t infer that it is genuine—or diagnose malware—from the wording alone. Note or capture the message and your Windows version/build, then consult Microsoft’s Windows Update guidance or seek help through Microsoft support.

Reduce interruptions by changing restart timing

If your main concern is Windows restarting while you are working, set Active hours at Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options. Active hours describe when you expect to use the device; Microsoft says automatic restarts after updates occur outside that period. This changes restart timing, not whether every update notification appears. Microsoft Learn: Manage device restarts after updates

What the available controls do—and do not do

Control What it affects Important limit
Windows Update in Settings Checks for offered updates and provides the supported route to download and install them. Seeing no matching update does not identify the cause of a particular pop-up. Microsoft Support
Active hours Helps schedule automatic restarts outside expected device-use hours. It is not a promise to suppress update messages. Microsoft Learn
Notification policies On managed devices, administrators can configure policies that turn off most or all update notifications. These policies are for managed-device scenarios, not a universal home-user fix; Microsoft notes they do not control when updates download or install. Some restart-notification policies are marked legacy and do not apply to Windows 11. Microsoft Learn
Pause updates Delays updates temporarily where the pause control is available. A January 2026 Q&A response reported a one-to-five-week selector for one user’s configuration; that is not a guarantee for every edition or build, and pausing is not permanent notification suppression. Can you permanently turn off this exact message?

The available Microsoft documentation does not establish a universal setting that permanently removes this exact prompt across Windows 11 builds and configurations. A September 2026 forum discussion describes similar messages as intrusive, but its suggested fixes are anecdotal rather than an established Microsoft solution. ElevenForum discussion, September 2026

For a personal PC, use Windows Update to review the update and Active hours to reduce inconvenient restarts. Avoid treating a notification policy or a pause option as a permanent fix: notification display, update installation, and restart scheduling are separate controls.

For Windows 10, Microsoft says support ended on October 14, 2025; the update page remains the place to check available updates, but support status differs from Windows 11. Microsoft Support
