Westpac Comprehensive is not one clearly defined policy. Westpac’s general travel-insurance page refers customers to Allianz Global Assistance for paid plans, while a separate credit-card offer allows eligible cardholders to pay to upgrade from complimentary medical cover to Comprehensive International Travel Insurance. The benefit summaries are not enough to judge price or suitability: check the PDS and premium for the exact product and purchase date before deciding.
Which Westpac Comprehensive policy is this?
There are two routes that can be confused:
- General travel insurance: Westpac directs customers to Allianz Global Assistance for plan details and quotes. The available cover depends on the plan selected. Westpac’s travel-insurance page describes broad benefit categories, not a single set of limits.
- Credit-card Comprehensive upgrade: A separate offer lets eligible cardholders pay to upgrade from complimentary International Medical Travel Insurance to Comprehensive International Travel Insurance. Westpac says this version is issued and managed by Allianz Global Assistance on behalf of Allianz. It is effective for new eligibility from 1 October 2026. Westpac’s card-insurance page sets out the offer and eligibility information.
This review focuses on what Westpac’s public descriptions establish about these Allianz-backed products. They should not be treated as interchangeable, and the cardholder eligibility rules do not automatically apply to the general Allianz-referred plans.
Who provides and stands behind the insurance?
Westpac states that AWP Australia Pty Ltd, trading as Allianz Global Assistance, issues the travel insurance for Allianz Australia Insurance Limited. Westpac refers customers to Allianz but does not guarantee the insurance. The policy documents, rather than the bank’s benefit summary, govern cover and claims.
Westpac also discloses that it may receive a commission of up to 10% of the premium, excluding government fees and charges, plus GST, when customers buy Allianz travel insurance through its referral. This is Westpac’s disclosure about its own referral arrangement; it does not establish whether an external publisher affiliate program is available.

What cover categories does Comprehensive describe?
For general Allianz-referred plans, Westpac lists possible benefits including 24/7 overseas emergency assistance, overseas medical and hospital expenses, cancellation, additional expenses, and luggage, personal effects and valuables. The wording is plan-dependent: it is not a promise that every plan includes every category, nor does it specify a payable limit.
For the card-linked paid upgrade, Westpac says Comprehensive can add categories such as luggage, cancellation and trip delays, with optional cruise and snow-sports cover. The full benefit list, conditions and limits depend on the applicable PDS. Westpac’s summary does not establish the amount payable for medical costs, cancellation or belongings, or the excess and exclusions.

How does the paid upgrade differ from complimentary card cover?
Westpac describes the complimentary International Medical Travel Insurance under the new card policy as covering Overseas Emergency Assistance, Overseas Emergency Medical Costs and Personal Liability. The paid Comprehensive upgrade may add further categories, including luggage, cancellation and trip delays, and optional cruise or snow-sports packs.
Those descriptions are category-level only. To compare the options meaningfully, check the applicable PDS for benefit limits, sublimits, excesses, exclusions, medical-condition rules and the precise terms for optional cover. Do not assume that paying for Comprehensive removes every limitation in the complimentary policy.

Who can qualify for the new complimentary card cover?
The conditions below apply to the new complimentary international medical cover for eligible cardholders from 1 October 2026; they are not general eligibility rules for every Westpac-referred travel plan. Westpac lists these conditions for the cardholder:
- Have an Australian permanent home.
- Hold a return overseas ticket.
- Charge at least A$500 in prepaid travel costs to the card before departure.
- Activate the cover before travel.
- Be under 81 years of age.
Westpac also sets separate requirements for spouses and dependants. Check its card-insurance information and the policy wording for those rules rather than assuming that a cardholder’s eligibility automatically extends to travelling companions.

What changed on 1 October 2026?
Westpac gives 1 October 2026 as the effective date for the new credit-card policy and paid Comprehensive upgrade. It says eligible bookings covered by the previous policy may remain under that policy if the trip ends by 30 September 2027, subject to the previous policy’s terms. For an existing booking or trip, identify the policy edition that applies to it instead of relying on the current summary.

Westpac’s public summaries do not establish whether either product is good value: the applicable premium, exact benefit limits, excesses and detailed exclusions are not stated there. A meaningful decision requires the PDS and quote for the exact policy, traveller and trip. Compare those details against other policies only on a like-for-like basis.

- Confirm whether the quote is for a general Allianz-referred plan or the card-linked Comprehensive upgrade.
- Compare the total premium with the medical, evacuation, cancellation and luggage limits, including sublimits and excesses.
- Check how the policy assesses pre-existing medical conditions and whether your activities, destination and trip type are covered.
- For the card-linked option, verify eligibility, activation and prepaid-spend requirements for each covered traveller.
- Review the rules and price for cruise or snow-sports options if relevant to your trip.
Westpac’s disclosure-document index and Allianz’s quote process are the places to locate the policy documents for the product being considered. Ask for the PDS matching the policy purchase date; do not substitute an older booklet or a different Allianz policy.
How do support and claims work?
Westpac directs general travel-insurance customers to Allianz for claims and support. Its listed general-policy contacts are 1800 010 075 for emergency assistance in Australia, +61 7 3305 7499 from overseas, travelclaims@allianz-assistance.com.au for claims, and 1800 502 077 for customer support. Contact details can change, so verify them against the policy documents before relying on them while travelling.
Credit-card cover has separate policy and claims information. Use the contact route and claim instructions for the card policy that applies to your trip, rather than assuming the general travel-insurance process is the same.
