Western Digital’s dramatic selloff has collided with improving operating results and a bullish artificial-intelligence storage thesis. The often-cited 175% upside is an analyst-target scenario, not a promised return: it depends on Western Digital maintaining pricing power, executing its high-capacity-drive roadmap and keeping hard-disk supply tight.
What happened to Western Digital stock?
Western Digital (NASDAQ: WDC) was reported at $380.71 in 2026, down 32.4% over three months from a cited starting point of $563.14. The decline occurred even though the company recorded five consecutive earnings beats, making the move look less like a reaction to weak current results and more like a repricing of future conditions.
| Measure | Reported figure | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Three-month share performance | -32.4%, from $563.14 | A sharp decline despite recent earnings beats |
| Fiscal Q4 revenue | $3.75 billion | Reported result for the quarter |
| Fiscal Q4 adjusted earnings per share | $3.56 versus $3.29 expected | Above the cited analyst estimate |
| Fiscal 2026 gross margin | Expanded from 43.9% to 54.4% | Significant year-over-year profitability improvement |
| Current-quarter gross-margin guidance | 55%–56% | Management expects further expansion in the near term |
| Q1 fiscal 2027 guidance | About $4.10 billion revenue and $4.00 EPS | Management’s forward outlook, not a reported result |
The figures were reported by 24/7 Wall St. in 2026 and syndicated by Yahoo Finance. They are time-sensitive and can change as the company reports new quarters.
Why did the shares fall despite strong earnings?
Investors are looking past the latest quarter
The earnings beat and margin expansion describe what Western Digital has already achieved. The stock decline reflects concern about whether those gains can persist once more hard-disk capacity reaches the market. In a supply-constrained industry, a small change in available production can affect price per terabyte, utilization and gross margin at the same time.

- High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
Toshiba’s planned expansion threatens supply discipline
A 2026 report said Toshiba plans to spend approximately ¥60 billion (about $380 million) to double hard-disk-drive production capacity by fiscal 2027. If that capacity arrives as planned, buyers could gain more negotiating leverage, price per terabyte could weaken and Western Digital’s margins could contract. The same supply reversal is the central reason the reported $1,050 target is a scenario rather than a dependable forecast.
Large customers can push back on price
Hyperscale cloud companies buy storage in enormous volumes. Their scale supports Western Digital’s revenue visibility but also gives them leverage to demand lower prices, better terms or commitments tied to technology transitions. A market with fewer supply constraints would strengthen that leverage.

What is the bullish AI-storage case?
Hard drives still carry most hyperscale data
Management estimates that roughly 80% of data stored in a hyperscale data center resides on HDDs. AI systems create enormous quantities of training data, checkpoints, logs and archived outputs. Solid-state storage is important for fast access, but the lower cost per terabyte of HDDs makes them critical for the large-capacity layer of these facilities.

For the quarter covered by the 2026 report, price per terabyte was described as rising in the high teens year over year, while cost per terabyte fell approximately 8%. That combination—higher realized pricing and lower unit cost—helps explain the increase in gross margin from 43.9% to 54.4% during fiscal 2026.

Customers are seeking long-term capacity
Demand for long-term agreements was described as extending into 2029–2031. Such contracts can give Western Digital better visibility into factory planning and revenue, although their value depends on the final pricing, volume commitments and cancellation terms.
The capacity roadmap could raise revenue per drive
Management’s roadmap calls for a 40TB ePMR ramp and a 44TB HAMR drive targeted for the first half of calendar 2027. Higher-capacity drives let data-center customers store more information in the same physical footprint. They can also improve economics if manufacturing yields and customer adoption meet expectations; neither outcome is guaranteed before launch.

How much upside are analysts actually projecting?
| Target source | Target price | Implied upside from $380.71 | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| 26-analyst average | $668.50 | 75.6% | Average target reported in 2026 |
| Melius Research analyst Ben Reitzes | $1,050 | 175.8% | Street-high analyst target and a supply-constrained scenario |
The $1,050 figure is not a company forecast, a guaranteed return or a realized gain. It assumes Western Digital can preserve strong pricing, convert demand into contracts, deliver its higher-capacity products and avoid a major increase in competing supply. Even the 26-analyst average is a target estimate, not a valuation floor.

How does Western Digital compare with related stocks?
| Company | Evidence reported in the 2026 coverage | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Western Digital | $380.71; down 32.4% in three months; gross margin reached 54.4% in fiscal 2026 | High sensitivity to HDD pricing, capacity and AI-driven demand |
| Seagate | Reported as falling alongside Western Digital amid supply fears; exact percentage and price were not stated | Shows that supply concerns extend across major HDD suppliers |
| NetApp | Up 20.2% in one month and trading above a cited $211.69 consensus target | Recent relative strength was better than the HDD names; the cited coverage did not provide a directly comparable margin or AI-storage figure |
These are not like-for-like businesses. Western Digital and Seagate have direct exposure to HDD component pricing and production capacity. NetApp is a storage-systems company, so its share performance reflects a different mix of hardware, software, services and enterprise spending.

What could derail the AI-storage thesis?
- Supply growth: Toshiba’s planned capacity increase could end the shortage that currently supports pricing.
- Margin compression: Lower price per terabyte or higher manufacturing costs would reverse the recent 54.4% gross-margin improvement.
- Hyperscaler bargaining power: A small number of very large customers can demand discounts or delay purchases.
- Execution risk: Delays, yield problems or weak adoption for the 40TB ePMR and 44TB HAMR products would reduce the benefit of the roadmap.
- Contract risk: Visibility through 2029–2031 is useful only if agreements carry firm volumes and acceptable prices.
- AI-spending volatility: If cloud providers slow data-center construction or optimize existing storage, demand could arrive later than expected.
What should an investor verify before considering WDC?
- Check the latest share price and compare it with the dated $380.71 reference; targets move as prices and estimates change.
- Read the next earnings release for price-per-terabyte growth, cost-per-terabyte reductions and gross-margin guidance.
- Look for evidence that long-term agreements include durable pricing rather than only volume commitments.
- Track Toshiba’s capacity schedule and any signs that industry supply is loosening before fiscal 2027.
- Verify launch timing, capacity and customer qualification for the 40TB ePMR and 44TB HAMR drives.
- Size the position for the possibility that the $1,050 target is not reached; analyst targets are scenarios, not guarantees or individualized advice.
Where an external Western Digital drive fits
For a practical storage need, Western Digital’s G-DRIVE line is positioned as unified external storage for content creators and other creative professionals following the SanDisk Professional separation. An external HDD can be useful for backup copies, media libraries and archives, but buying a drive is a hardware decision separate from buying WDC shares. Product availability, pricing and any affiliate arrangement should be checked at the time of purchase.
Bottom line
Western Digital’s selloff reflects fear that new HDD supply will weaken the pricing and margins that powered its recent results. The bullish case is substantial AI and hyperscale demand, improving unit economics, long-term customer visibility and higher-capacity products. The reported 175.8% upside requires those trends to persist while Toshiba’s expansion fails to create a lasting oversupply. Investors should treat the target as a high-risk scenario and monitor supply, pricing, contracts and product execution rather than relying on the headline percentage.
