Used PCs deserve a closer look, but a low asking price alone does not make one a good buy. Check the exact configuration, Windows support status, condition, and seller protections—and compare the total cost with a new computer for the work you need it to do. There is no dependable current market-wide price or savings figure that proves used PCs are always cheaper.
Why Windows support matters more than the sticker price
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer receives standard software updates, security updates or fixes, or technical assistance. A Windows 10 computer can still turn on and run, but continued operation is not the same as ongoing support. Before buying an older PC, check whether its exact configuration can run Windows 11 or whether an applicable Extended Security Updates option is available for your device and region. Microsoft’s Windows support guidance describes the available paths, including upgrading an eligible device, enrolling an eligible device in Extended Security Updates, or replacing it with a supported device.
Can this used PC run Windows 11?
Do not rely on a product-family name or a seller’s broad claim that a computer is “Windows 11 ready.” Eligibility depends on the actual configuration and firmware. Microsoft’s minimum requirements include an approved processor running at 1 GHz or faster with at least two cores, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB or more of storage, TPM 2.0, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, and DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver. The processor must appear on Microsoft’s approved CPU list. These are compatibility minimums, not a recommendation for a comfortable experience with demanding workloads. Check the current list and requirements on Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements page before purchase; the approved processor list can change.

Ask the seller for the exact model and configuration, then verify the processor and any relevant firmware or security settings against Microsoft’s current requirements. If the listing provides only a series name or says “Core i5” or “Core i7,” it does not give enough information to establish eligibility or expected performance.

Compare the actual configuration, not the model name
Two computers from the same product family can differ substantially. Check the specific processor, memory, storage, and whether components can be upgraded. Match those details to the programs and tasks you actually use: basic browsing and documents have different needs from large creative projects or other intensive workloads. A minimum operating-system requirement does not tell you whether a particular configuration will feel responsive for your work.
For laptops, assess battery condition separately from the rest of the machine. For any PC, consider what repairs or upgrades would cost and whether the resulting computer still makes sense against a new device. Compare individual-used listings, specialist-refurbished units, manufacturer-refurbished programs, and new computers on their disclosed specifications and terms; none is automatically the best value.

What to check before buying a used PC
- Exact configuration: Confirm the processor, RAM, storage capacity, and, for Windows 11, eligibility of the specific processor and system.
- Condition and inspection: Read the seller’s description and grading method. Look for disclosure of functional or cosmetic issues and what inspection or refurbishment was performed.
- Laptop battery: Check whether battery health or runtime is disclosed, and whether the battery is covered by any warranty.
- Included items: Verify that the required charger and any other promised accessories are included.
- Warranty, returns, and support: Read the actual terms, including the return period, who handles support, and any exclusions. There is no single grading, warranty, return, or battery-health standard that applies to all used-PC sellers.
- Total cost: Add any likely repairs, replacement battery, memory or storage upgrades, and missing accessories before comparing the price with alternatives.
- Fit for your use: Consider workload, portability, and the useful life you expect from the device, not just its original retail positioning.
Is a refurbished PC worth it?
“Refurbished” is not, by itself, a universal promise about inspection, parts, battery condition, warranty, or returns. The value depends on what the seller actually did and what protections come with the specific unit. A clearly documented inspection and usable return terms can make a refurbished option easier to assess than a listing with little condition detail, but compare the exact configuration and final cost rather than assuming refurbishment guarantees a particular standard.
What happens to data on a used computer?
A used PC should not be assumed to have been securely wiped simply because it has been reset or refurbished. A 2007 Canadian study examined 60 functional disk drives bought second-hand and reported recoverable personal information on 65% of that sample; the paper also found personal health information on a subset. This is a historical result from a small, bounded study—not a current estimate for all used computers or sellers. The study’s full paper explains its scope. Buyers should ask what data-wiping process was used and, when setting up a device, perform a clean installation or reset appropriate to the operating system and verify that no previous user accounts or files remain.

How to decide between used and new
Start with the work the PC must do, then compare specific machines on support eligibility, configuration, condition, seller protections, and total cost. A used model may be sensible when its condition and support path are clear and its capabilities suit your needs. If support status, battery health, repair costs, or returns are unclear, the apparent bargain is harder to evaluate. Without a defined country, use case, and comparable listings, there is no reliable universal price advantage or savings percentage to apply.
