To test a live WebSocket message, connect to the endpoint, wait until the socket is open, send a harmless message in the format the application expects, and verify an incoming response or other server-side result. A browser-based tester is convenient for a quick interactive check; use a command-line client when the handshake needs options such as authorization headers, an origin, a subprotocol, or a client certificate.
Choose a browser tester or a command-line client
| Consideration | Browser-based tester | Command-line client |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Enter a WebSocket URL, connect, and use the page’s message controls. The wscat.dev page describes a URL field, connect control, message input, send control, and history options. Source: wscat.dev | Install and run a CLI utility in a terminal. The wscat project documents connect and listen modes. Source: wscat project |
| Handshake controls | Check that the specific tester supports every option your endpoint requires; a basic URL-and-message interface may not expose them. | wscat documents authentication, headers, origin, subprotocol, certificate authority, client certificate, and key options. Source: wscat project |
| Message inspection | Use the page’s send controls and displayed history to inspect messages. | Enter messages in the terminal and inspect terminal output. |
| Best fit | A quick interactive check when the endpoint needs no unsupported handshake options. | A connection with additional handshake requirements, or a workflow that needs CLI controls. |
| Privacy and performance | Not established by the cited page; review a service’s data-handling practices before entering sensitive information. No comparative performance result is established. | No comparative performance result is established by the cited project documentation. |
The browser page documents its interface, not independent testing of reliability, privacy, performance, or compatibility with every endpoint. The wscat documentation describes available options, not a head-to-head evaluation. Choose based on the connection controls you need rather than assuming one approach is universally faster or safer.
How to test a WebSocket connection and send a message
- Get the endpoint requirements. Obtain the exact WebSocket URL and ask the endpoint owner which authorization, headers, origin, subprotocol, and message format are required.
- Use the secure endpoint for a real application. Prefer a
wss://URL. MDN recommends HTTPS pages and secure WebSocket connections for real applications and warns against insecure WebSockets in mixed-content contexts. Source: MDN - Connect with a suitable client. In a browser tester, enter the URL and connect. In wscat, use its connect option with the endpoint, adding the documented options the service requires.
- Wait for the open state. Send only after the connection is ready; the WebSocket states are CONNECTING (0), OPEN (1), CLOSING (2), and CLOSED (3). Source: MDN
- Send a representative, authorized test message. Match the endpoint’s documented format and use a harmless payload. For a JSON endpoint, send valid JSON with the required action or route field.
- Inspect the incoming message and connection details. Look for the expected response, an error, or a close event. If there is no response, use the troubleshooting steps below rather than treating the outgoing message as proof of success.
- Close the session when finished. In AWS’s wscat procedure, Ctrl-C disconnects. Source: AWS
Example: send a message to an AWS API Gateway WebSocket API
AWS documents installing wscat with npm install -g wscat, connecting to the deployed API URL with wscat -c, and entering a JSON message. Its example payloads include {"action":"action1"} and {"message":"test response body"}. The guide’s example assumes the API authorization setting is NONE and instructs readers to substitute their API ID and region. It does not demonstrate authenticated operation; follow the actual authorization configuration for your endpoint. AWS connection and testing procedure
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to tell whether the message actually worked
A successful connection shows that the handshake completed. It does not prove that the application processed a message. In the browser API, send() queues data asynchronously and returns without waiting for the server to handle it; bufferedAmount reports bytes queued but not yet transmitted. A send action or outgoing log alone is therefore not confirmation of server processing. MDN: send() MDN: bufferedAmount

Wait for a meaningful incoming response or confirm the expected server-side effect using an appropriate signal. WebSocket communication is bidirectional: after connection, either side can send messages. MDN: WebSockets API
Why a WebSocket tester connects but shows no response
The message was sent before the socket was open
Check the connection state before sending. Calling send() while the socket is CONNECTING throws an InvalidStateError; data sent while it is CLOSING or CLOSED is silently discarded. Send only when the state is OPEN. MDN: send() MDN: readyState

- Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
- Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
- Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
The payload does not match the application’s expected message
A connection can be open even when the message has the wrong JSON shape, action, route key, or content. Compare the test payload with the endpoint owner’s instructions and use the documented format. For API Gateway, AWS’s example uses a JSON action field as the route key in its stated no-authorization setup. Source: AWS

The service expects a WebSocket subprotocol
A client can offer protocol names during connection; the server selects one it supports. In a browser, the selected value is exposed as WebSocket.protocol. If the endpoint requires a subprotocol, configure the tester to offer a compatible value and inspect the selection. A tester unable to offer it may fail despite a correct URL. Source: MDN
The browser handshake is restricted or fails before message handling
The WHATWG WebSockets Standard says browser handshakes generally do not follow redirects because redirects could introduce serious security problems in a browser context. A redirect or handshake failure in a browser tester does not by itself show that the endpoint’s message handling is broken. Source: WHATWG WebSockets Standard

Protect credentials and live services while testing
- Send only test messages you are authorized to send, and use a harmless payload that will not trigger unintended production actions.
- Prefer
wss://for real applications; do not send credentials or sensitive data over an insecure connection. - Do not enter tokens, personal data, or production secrets into a third-party tester unless you have reviewed its data-handling practices.
- For a large queued send, be aware that if the browser’s buffer cannot accept data, the connection can be closed. Source: MDN
