You can disable Edge’s Website typo protection from Settings > Privacy, Search, and Services. Scroll to Security, then switch off the Website typo protection control. The change removes Edge’s specific warning for likely mistyped web addresses; it does not turn off every security feature in the browser.
Quick answer: disable the warning in Edge’s Security settings
Open Microsoft Edge and follow this path:
- Select the Settings and more button (the three dots) in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Privacy, Search, and Services in the left-hand navigation.
- Scroll down to the Security section.
- Find the control for Website typo protection and switch it off.
Microsoft’s support instructions confirm that this is where the setting is located. The support page does not document the exact text shown on every version of Edge or show a screenshot of the interaction, so the control may not look identical on every installation. You do not need to change SmartScreen or another security setting to disable typo protection.
After you change the control, close Settings. If Edge warns about a suspicious address later, first determine which protection produced the warning: turning off Website typo protection only removes the checker for likely mistyped common addresses.
What Website typo protection does
Website typo protection is Edge’s typosquatting checker. It looks for situations in which an address appears to be a misspelling of a well-known or commonly visited website. Microsoft describes the feature as follows: “Microsoft Edge includes a typosquatting checker that can warn you if you appear to have mistyped a common web address and may be directed to a malicious site.” You can read the full explanation in Microsoft Support’s explanation of typosquatting.

Typosquatting is the practice of registering a domain that resembles another organization’s address, often by changing, omitting, or adding a character. Microsoft uses tailspintoy.com as an example of a lookalike for tailspintoys.com. A person who types quickly, follows an incomplete address, or misreads a message can land on the lookalike site without realizing it.
A lookalike domain is not automatically malicious, but it can be used to display aggressive advertising, imitate a legitimate login page, collect passwords or payment details, or distribute malware. The warning is therefore an address-checking layer: it attempts to interrupt the visit before you interact with a potentially deceptive site.
Disabling the feature does not make a website safe, and it does not tell Edge to trust every address you enter. It simply stops this particular typo-related warning from being presented by the browser.

Some people disable the checker because it interrupts a legitimate address, because a private or less common domain resembles another name, or because they prefer to verify addresses themselves. Others may be troubleshooting a false positive and want to remove only the typo warning while retaining other Edge protections.
Before changing it, consider whether the warning is helping you catch mistakes. If you regularly type addresses from memory, use unfamiliar links, or share a computer with less experienced users, the interruption may prevent an accidental visit to a lookalike site. If you always use bookmarks and verify domains manually, the warning may be less useful to you.
The setting should not be confused with a general “safe browsing off” switch. Microsoft’s description of Edge security features treats typo protection and SmartScreen as separate features. The Microsoft Edge security-features guide explains that distinction; changing Website typo protection is not the same as disabling SmartScreen.

Step-by-step instructions
1. Open Edge’s settings
Launch Microsoft Edge, select the three-dot Settings and more menu, and choose Settings. This opens the browser’s configuration page rather than a website tab, so the change applies to Edge’s own settings.
2. Go to Privacy, Search, and Services
In the settings navigation, select Privacy, Search, and Services. This area contains Edge’s privacy controls and several browsing-security controls. If the left navigation is collapsed, expand it first so the section names are visible.
3. Locate the Security section
Scroll through the page until you reach Security. Do not change unrelated controls while looking for the typo setting. The Microsoft-documented location is within this section, not under the address-bar, appearance, or site-permissions pages.
4. Switch off Website typo protection
Find Website typo protection and switch its control off. Microsoft’s instructions identify the setting and its location but do not specify a universal label for the disabled state, nor do they describe a confirmation dialog. Use the control itself as the indication that the setting has been changed; do not assume that another warning or pop-up must appear.
5. Return to browsing carefully
Once the control has been changed, leave the settings page and navigate normally. The next address that resembles a common misspelling will no longer receive this specific typo-protection intervention. Other browser warnings can still appear for other reasons.

What changes—and what does not
| Browser behavior or feature | Effect of disabling Website typo protection |
|---|---|
| Warning about a likely mistyped common web address | This specific checker is disabled, so its typo-related warning is removed. |
| SmartScreen and other Edge security features | Not disabled by this setting; Microsoft describes them separately. |
| Your saved favorites | Unaffected. Favorites remain available and are a safer way to open important sites. |
| The address you type | Not corrected or validated for you. You remain responsible for checking the domain. |
| Unsafe-site reporting | Still available through Help and feedback > Report unsafe site. |
There is no evidence in Microsoft’s public guidance that this control disables every warning, changes your saved data, or modifies the contents of a website. It is a narrowly scoped preference for the typosquatting checker.

How to avoid a lookalike site after disabling the checker
Use saved favorites for important accounts
Microsoft recommends opening important destinations—such as banking, social-media, and shopping accounts—from saved favorites whenever possible. A favorite avoids retyping the domain and reduces the chance of following a deceptive address copied into a message.
Review a favorite before relying on it for a sensitive account. If it was created after visiting an address you do not recognize, remove it and create a new favorite from the organization’s known, legitimate address.
Inspect the domain before entering information
When you type an address, pause before submitting a password, payment number, or other sensitive information. Check the spelling of the organization name, the domain ending, and the characters immediately before the first slash. Lookalike domains often rely on one missing letter, an extra letter, a swapped character, or a visually similar name.

Do not treat a familiar logo, page color, or login layout as proof that the site is genuine. Those elements can be copied. The domain in the address bar is the part you should compare with the address you intended to visit.
Be cautious with unexpected links
Messages can hide a destination behind link text that looks trustworthy. Before selecting an unexpected link, inspect its destination and consider whether you were expecting the message. A link that sends you to a domain with a subtle spelling difference deserves the same caution as a manually mistyped address.
Leave a suspicious page instead of testing it
If a page looks like a typosquatting destination, close the tab and start again from a saved favorite or a known address. Do not enter credentials simply to see whether the page “works,” and do not download a file offered by an unexpected lookalike site.

Report an unsafe site
Edge provides a reporting route through Help and feedback > Report unsafe site. Use it when you encounter a site that appears to impersonate a legitimate organization, distribute malware, or otherwise pose a danger. Reporting does not replace closing the page or protecting any credentials that may already have been entered.
If the setting is missing or the warning continues
The control is not visible
Microsoft’s support material establishes the Security location but does not document every version, platform, or possible administrative configuration. If you cannot find the control, verify that you are in Edge’s own Privacy, Search, and Services settings and that you have scrolled through the complete Security section. Do not substitute a different privacy or security switch merely because its name sounds similar.
The published guidance also does not establish whether an organization-managed installation can override an individual’s choice. On a managed computer, an administrator may control which settings are available; Microsoft’s cited pages do not provide a policy-specific procedure for this setting.
A warning still appears
First identify the type of warning. If it concerns a likely misspelling of a common address, confirm that the Website typo protection control is disabled in the Security section. If the warning concerns malware, phishing, downloads, certificates, or another risk, it may come from a different Edge security feature. Because Microsoft describes typo protection and SmartScreen separately, turning off the typo checker should not be expected to suppress those other warnings.
You changed your mind
Return to the same Security section and switch the Website typo protection control back on. Microsoft’s guidance does not specify the exact text used for the enabled state on every version, so use the control’s current state rather than relying on a particular word such as “On” or “Off.” Once restored, the typo checker can warn again when Edge detects a likely misspelling.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs disabling it an “override” of Edge security?
Searches sometimes describe this task as a “Website typo protection override.” Microsoft’s public instructions document a user-facing setting for turning the typo checker off; they do not describe a separate override command or a universal enterprise-policy mechanism. In practical terms, the action above changes the browser preference that controls this warning layer. It should not be described as overriding SmartScreen or all Edge security.
If you need a security decision for a work-managed browser, ask the organization’s administrator which policies apply. The available Microsoft guidance does not establish how every managed installation handles this preference, so a missing or unchangeable control cannot be diagnosed from the setting name alone.
Key safety decision
Turning off Website typo protection is reasonable only if you are prepared to replace its address check with your own routine. Keep important destinations in favorites, verify domains before entering information, treat unexpected links as untrusted until checked, and leave any page that appears to imitate a legitimate site. These habits remain useful whether the typo checker is enabled or disabled.
