A polished preview is not proof that a website template is ready to ship. Before launch, test the configured production site—not just its homepage—against the journeys visitors need to complete, confirm accessibility against a named standard and scope, inspect privacy and security behavior, and verify that indexing and recovery settings are correct. Then repeat critical checks on the live release and record what was actually tested.
Set the release scope before testing
A launch checklist is a release control, not a guarantee. Define what the release includes so a “pass” has a clear meaning.
- Name the release owner and the production URL.
- List the pages, supported browsers and devices, and visitor actions in scope.
- Identify known exclusions and mark each check as pass, fail, or not checked. An unchecked item is not a pass.
- If the template is a starting point, identify the site-owner decisions still needed, such as domain configuration, content, privacy disclosures, and form destinations.
Keep evidence with each result—for example, the URL tested, the device or browser, and the date—so another person can understand what the status covers.

Verify the production configuration
Use the actual production hostname. Staging may differ from the deployed site in environment settings, integrations, redirects, assets, or indexing controls.
#1 Best Overall
- Confirm that the intended release appears at the production URL, that the preferred canonical URL is correct, and that HTTP requests redirect to HTTPS as intended. Check alternate hostnames if the site uses them.
- Confirm that production configuration is present and that development credentials, debug output, placeholder integrations, and sample data are not exposed.
- Search rendered pages and source for localhost or staging URLs, test content, placeholder text, empty links, broken images, and unfinished controls.
- Check that certificates work and review secrets, exposed administrative surfaces, dependencies, platform updates, and error verbosity for the technology in use.
Test the journeys visitors rely on
Exercise representative pages and layouts, not only the homepage. On desktop and mobile, perform each action the site offers: navigation, form submission, sign-in, booking, purchase, download, or search.
Check successful and unsuccessful paths
- Submit valid, invalid, empty, and edge-case input. Confirm that errors are understandable and that a successful action reaches its intended destination.
- For forms, verify the full path: the destination or integration, submission result, and any confirmation or response behavior. A button that appears to work is not enough.
- Test internal and external links, media, embeds, redirects, and error pages. Make sure controls that look interactive actually do something.
Repeat the critical journeys on the deployed release after launch. A staging result does not establish that a production form, final URL, asset, or third-party service works.

Review accessibility against a named target
For a new checklist, use WCAG 2.2, the latest WCAG 2 version that W3C encourages people to use. WCAG 2.2 became a W3C Recommendation on 5 October 2023 and added nine success criteria relative to WCAG 2.1 (W3C WAI: What’s New in WCAG 2.2). WCAG 2 organizes testable success criteria under four principles—perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust—with conformance levels A, AA, and AAA (W3C WAI: WCAG 2 Overview).
Review practical areas such as keyboard operation, visible focus, semantic headings and controls, text alternatives, form labels and errors, contrast, zoom and reflow, and interactive states. This is a useful test set, not a complete WCAG audit. Combine automated checks with manual review and, where feasible, assistive-technology and user testing; automated results alone do not establish conformance.
Rank #3
If you make a conformance claim, name the WCAG version, level, pages or content covered, and evaluation date and scope. A WCAG logo does not mean W3C or WAI reviewed or validated the site’s conformance (W3C WAI: Adding WCAG Conformance Logos).
Check search visibility and migration behavior
On the production host, inspect page titles and descriptions, canonical URLs, the sitemap, robots directives, and whether the pages intended for discovery are indexable. Make sure staging-only noindex, password, or robots rules have not accidentally shipped, and that production is not unintentionally blocked.
For a redesign or URL change, inventory old URLs and test the intended redirects. These checks help prevent avoidable discovery and migration problems; they do not guarantee search rankings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteInspect privacy behavior and prepare recovery
Inventory the site’s scripts, cookies, local storage, analytics, advertising, embeds, and data recipients. Compare what the configured site actually does with its public notices and consent behavior. Requirements vary by jurisdiction and by site behavior, so a checklist cannot establish legal compliance.
Best Value
- Back up relevant content and configuration, and know how to restore them or roll back the release.
- Assign a person or process to respond to alerts and incidents.
- Keep a way to notice production errors, failed forms, traffic problems, or availability issues.
Measure performance and plan ongoing checks
Review image weight, fonts, JavaScript, caching, and compression on representative pages and devices. Measure the configured site rather than assuming a template is fast. Decide how performance or availability problems will be noticed and who will respond.
Repeat relevant checks after changes to dependencies, integrations, content systems, or hosting. A release checklist is useful only while it reflects the site that is actually running.
Record the result and communicate limits
For each check, record pass, fail, or not checked, along with its evidence and owner. Fix blockers before release where possible; disclose remaining limitations clearly and provide a support route. Make only claims that the evidence and scope support: terms such as “fully accessible,” “secure,” “legally compliant,” or “guaranteed to rank” require substantiation for that exact claim.
