Your website should keep changing—but through deliberate, evidence-led maintenance, not constant redesigns. Search systems, content, accessibility needs and technical infrastructure evolve. Regular reviews help you respond to real user problems and keep the site working well; a search fluctuation alone is not a reason to overhaul it.
Why a website needs ongoing attention
Search and user expectations evolve
Google says it makes significant broad changes to Search several times a year, while search results also shift as web content and user expectations change. Google described Search as being updated “thousands of times a year” in a June 2, 2021 post. That is a historical figure about Google’s systems, not a schedule for updating your site or a forecast of what a particular change will achieve. Google’s explanation of Search updates provides that context.
Search positions are not fixed, and a change to your site is not guaranteed to produce a noticeable result. Google says the effect of improvements may take days or several months to appear. Treat a change in visibility as a signal to investigate, not an automatic command to redesign. Google’s guidance on core updates explains how to assess changes.
Content and accessibility can drift
New pages, routine edits and redesigned features can make a site more useful and accessible, but they can also introduce barriers. The W3C Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) puts both sides plainly: “Changing content can introduce accessibility issues, and provide opportunities for improvement.” Its sustainability guidance recommends regular review of content, organizational processes and resources rather than treating accessibility as a one-time launch task.

Technology and hosting change
Software, integrations and hosting environments may need maintenance or replacement. These changes can affect delivery and search crawling, so they deserve testing and monitoring. A hosting move is not just a technical switch; it is a transition that should be planned and verified. Google’s hosting and SEO guidance covers preparation and monitoring.
How often should you update a website?
There is no evidence-based universal interval for redesigning or updating every site. Set a recurring review cadence that fits your publishing volume, user needs and operational risk, and also review when a meaningful signal appears. A minor factual correction does not need to wait for a redesign; a major migration needs a plan before it starts.

Useful triggers include:
- Visitors are struggling to complete an important task or find current information.
- A page has become outdated, inaccurate or inconsistent with the service it describes.
- An accessibility review or user report identifies a barrier.
- Search visibility changes materially for specific pages or queries.
- A platform, integration or hosting change creates a technical need or risk.
Do not treat every small ranking movement as a reason to make drastic changes. Google recommends reviewing evidence, including affected pages and queries in Search Console, before deciding what to do.

- Identify the signal. Start with a specific user problem, outdated information, accessibility issue, technical risk or measurable performance change—not a vague desire to make the site feel new.
- Locate the affected page or task. Determine which content, audience and user journey are involved. For search changes, compare affected pages and queries in Search Console rather than relying on one overall position or impression.
- Check potential benefits and risks. Ask whether the change could improve access, accuracy or usability, and whether it might disrupt assistive technology, search crawling, integrations or critical workflows.
- Make the smallest meaningful change. A focused correction or accessible interaction improvement is often easier to evaluate and less risky than changing the whole site without evidence.
- Test before a major release. Check key pages and tasks in the new environment before switching over. Include accessibility checks and verify that essential content and functions still work.
- Monitor after release. Watch user-facing behavior and relevant search performance. Allow for the possibility that search effects take days to months, and do not assume that an improvement guarantees a visible ranking change.
Make changes without surprising visitors
Changes in context can disorient people, including some people using assistive technology. W3C’s guidance on WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 3.2.5 addresses changes of context, while its Technique G76 describes a way to let users request content updates instead of forcing automatic refreshes.

For example, avoid unexpectedly moving focus, navigating away, or refreshing a page while someone is reading or entering information. Where automatically updated content is necessary, consider whether users can pause it or request an update, and test the behavior with assistive technology. The right implementation depends on the feature; the underlying goal is to keep users informed and in control.

A hosting migration can affect whether pages are delivered and crawled. Google advises preparing and testing the new environment, monitoring traffic during the transition and keeping the old environment until delivery on the new setup is confirmed. A temporary crawl-rate drop immediately after a move can be normal; by itself, it does not prove the migration has failed.
- Prepare the new environment. Check that the site and its essential functions work on the destination host before directing visitors there.
- Test before switching. Verify representative pages and important user tasks in the new setup.
- Switch traffic deliberately. Make the DNS change as part of a planned transition rather than retiring the existing environment first.
- Monitor delivery and traffic. Check that pages remain accessible and track relevant traffic and search signals after the change.
- Retire the old setup only after confirmation. Keep it available until the new environment is delivering the site reliably.
See Google’s site-move guidance for its recommendations on preparation and monitoring.
How to decide whether a redesign is warranted
A redesign is a large intervention, not the default response to a website needing attention. Before approving one, answer these questions:
- What user problem will it solve? Name the task or barrier, rather than relying on aesthetics alone.
- Which pages or journeys are affected? Define the scope so you can compare before and after.
- What accessibility benefit or risk does it introduce? Include review in both design and publishing work.
- What implementation or migration risks need managing? Plan testing and monitoring for changes to infrastructure or delivery.
- What evidence would show that it helped? Choose relevant user or performance signals before release, while recognizing that search outcomes are not guaranteed.
If the site is otherwise performing well and the observed search-position loss is small, Google advises against drastic changes. Investigate the specific pages and queries first; then make a proportionate change if the evidence points to a real problem.
