Exporting a visual-builder site may give you files you can host elsewhere, but it does not necessarily transfer the CMS, customer data, forms, checkout, search, or other services that make the site work. The outcome depends on the builder: Webflow offers a code export with important exclusions, Framer says it does not offer HTML export for self-hosting, and Wix documents a separate static-site upload path through Wix Headless.
Static and dynamic describe how a site gets its content
A static page displays content that someone updates manually in the page’s individual elements. A dynamic page draws content from a data source—such as a CMS collection, the current page, or a locale—and uses that data to populate a consistent layout. A blog template that displays different posts from CMS records is a common example. Webflow’s explanation of static and dynamic content and Wix’s overview describe these distinctions.
“Static” does not mean a site has no JavaScript or interaction, and “dynamic” does not necessarily mean a custom web application. For portability, the practical question is whether the displayed content or a feature depends on connected data or a service provided by the builder. HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and images can reproduce a page’s appearance without carrying over the data or services behind it.

An export can be a package of front-end files rather than a complete, independently operating website. Webflow, for example, says eligible users can export HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and assets in a ZIP. Its documentation says export is available on paid Workspace plans, not Site plans. Webflow’s export documentation lists the exclusions and behaviors below; they should not be assumed to apply identically to every builder.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
| Part of the site | What Webflow says happens in an export |
|---|---|
| Page files and assets | The ZIP includes page HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and images. |
| CMS | CMS content and functionality are not included. Collection lists may be empty, and CMS-bound fields may have no content. |
| Accounts and commerce | User accounts, ecommerce databases, and ecommerce functionality are not included. |
| Localization | Localized pages, elements, and content beyond the primary locale are not included. |
| Forms and search | Site search and forms—including file upload and reCAPTCHA—will not work as expected. |
| Protection and components | Password protection no longer protects pages, and code components are not included. |
Webflow says exported code can be edited and hosted elsewhere without maintaining a Webflow plan. That does not restore the omitted features: you need replacement services or custom development for the functions your site relies on. Webflow also cautions that manual edits can break components. Lottie JSON files do not load from a local file system as expected; they need to be served from a web server.
How the export path differs by builder

| Builder | Documented portability path | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Webflow | Paid Workspace plans can export HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and assets. Export is not included on Site plans. | The export omits or does not preserve several CMS, account, commerce, localization, form, search, password-protection, and code-component features. See Webflow’s export documentation. |
| Framer | Framer states, “Framer does not offer HTML export for self-hosting.” | Framer says its published sites rely on services including pre-rendering, image optimization, font subsetting, server-side rendering, delivery, and caching. This reflects its help page updated September 15, 2026; check Framer’s current guidance before making a decision. |
| Wix | Wix documents uploading static HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and assets through Wix Headless, then connecting the front end to Wix business solutions. | This is a Wix Headless workflow, not a general-purpose export of a Wix Editor site. Wix says Headless is not currently available to all users. See Wix’s upload instructions. |
Check what must keep working before you move
A screenshot or visual preview can look complete even when important site functions are missing. Make an inventory of what your site contains and decide whether each item must work after the move.

- CMS records and the pages or lists that display them
- Customer or member accounts and any account data
- Products, checkout, orders, and other ecommerce functions
- Forms, file uploads, and any verification or spam-protection steps
- Site search
- Password-protected pages or other access restrictions
- Locale-specific pages and content
- Builder-specific code components or integrations
For every function you need, identify where its data lives and how the replacement site will provide it. Webflow says exported sites need third-party forms or integrations to collect submissions. Hosting the exported files alone does not recreate a database, accounts, checkout, forms, search, or access controls.

Plan the move as a rebuild when necessary
Changing builders is not necessarily a file conversion. Webflow’s migration guidance for sites coming from Wix, Squarespace, WordPress, or Framer says there is no automated conversion into Webflow; its process involves manually recreating layouts, styles, CMS structure, and interactions. That describes migration into Webflow, not every possible platform pairing. Webflow’s migration overview explains its process.

- Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required

- Confirm export access. Check whether your plan and account can export, and identify the file formats included.
- Record what the site depends on. List its CMS records, accounts, products and orders, forms, search, protected pages, locales, components, and integrations.
- Choose a replacement for each required function. Decide which host, backend, or third-party service will handle it, and plan how its data will be transferred or recreated.
- Test the exported project on a web server. A local-file preview is not always a reliable test; Webflow documents a Lottie limitation when files are opened from a local file system.
- Allow time for reconstruction. If the destination cannot import the project, expect to recreate layouts, styles, content structures, and interactions rather than simply upload a project file.
