WebRTC does not set how long a game must keep voice-lobby telemetry replayable after a player disconnects. SRTP replay protection applies to RTP and RTCP transport packets; deciding whether to retain, inspect, or replay application events is the game’s responsibility.
What does “replay” mean in a WebRTC voice lobby?
The word describes two different things here. One is a transport-security mechanism; the other is an application policy for handling recorded events. Confusing them can lead a team to assume that WebRTC controls data retention when it does not.
| Meaning | What it covers | What it does not decide |
|---|---|---|
| SRTP replay protection | Protection for RTP and RTCP packets in WebRTC media transport. | Whether the game stores telemetry, how long it keeps it, or whether it replays events after a disconnect. |
| Application telemetry replay | The game’s handling of events or diagnostic records—for example, whether to inspect them later or use them to reconstruct application state. | It is not the SRTP packet-protection mechanism, and its boundaries are not set by WebRTC standards. |
Does SRTP replay protection stop a game from replaying telemetry?
No. RFC 8834, the IETF’s January 2021 Standards Track document Media Transport and Use of RTP in WebRTC, requires WebRTC endpoints to use the secure RTP profile for RTP and RTCP packets. It says: “WebRTC endpoints MUST NOT send packets using the basic RTP/AVP profile or the RTP/AVPF profile; they MUST employ the full RTP/SAVPF profile to protect all RTP and RTCP packets that are generated.” RFC 3711, The Secure Real-time Transport Protocol (SRTP) (March 2004), describes SRTP’s transport-security scope, including replay protection.
Those requirements concern media-transport packets. They do not specify how an application records telemetry events, whether it can replay those events, or when stored records should expire. An application’s event replay policy therefore needs to be designed separately.

What telemetry can WebRTC provide for diagnosing a disconnect?
The W3C WebRTC: Real-Time Communication in Browsers Recommendation, published March 13, 2025, describes browser-accessible diagnostics such as inbound RTP packet loss and jitter, audio energy, bytes received, and connection-state events. Available fields depend on the relevant objects and on which fields are valid in a given implementation; do not assume every browser or session exposes every metric.
Use these as diagnostic signals, not as a definitive account of why a player left. A connection-state or ICE-state transition records a state change; by itself, it does not establish the cause of the disconnect or justify replaying voice content. Interpret relevant observations together with session context and your application’s own events rather than treating one metric as an authoritative explanation.

How long should telemetry remain replayable?
There is no duration to copy from the cited WebRTC standards: they establish neither a numeric telemetry replay window nor a post-disconnect grace period. The appropriate boundary depends on what the game is trying to accomplish. Quality diagnosis and reconstructing game state are different purposes and may call for different event sets, access rules, and expiration decisions.
Set the window as an explicit application policy, based on the purpose and sensitivity of the records and the requirements that apply to your product. Do not describe a chosen duration as a WebRTC requirement. The W3C Recommendation and the two cited RFCs do not determine the privacy, access, or legal requirements for a particular game or jurisdiction.

How should a game define event eligibility after a disconnect?
Write down which records are eligible for later inspection or replay, and how that eligibility changes as a session ends or resumes. These are application decisions, not protocol defaults.
- Separate event classes. Distinguish connection metadata and quality diagnostics from any media content. Decide explicitly whether each class is recorded and whether it may be used to reconstruct application state.
- Keep session context. Record relevant state transitions alongside enough session context to interpret them. A state-change event without that context can be easy to misread.
- Define the disconnect boundary. Specify whether events remain eligible after disconnect, what happens on reconnect, and whether a replacement session is treated as the same session or a new one.
- Control inspection and replay. State who or what may access retained records, for which purpose, and under what conditions they may be replayed.
- Set and enforce expiration. Choose a retention period for each relevant event class and make expiration behavior part of the application policy; the cited standards supply no value.
What does WebRTC encryption cover—and what remains the application’s job?
The W3C Recommendation states: “A user agent will always encrypt data, with strong per-session keying (DTLS-SRTP).” This describes WebRTC’s transport protection. It does not decide whether an application should retain diagnostic events, who may inspect them, or how long they remain available. Keep transport security and application-level access and retention decisions as separate parts of the design.
