Bitdefender is the stronger evidence-based choice for most Windows users who prioritize recent independent testing. In AV-TEST’s April 2026 Windows 11 home-user round, Bitdefender Total Security 27.0 earned 6/6 for Protection, Performance, and Usability. AV-Comparatives also placed Bitdefender among the Advanced+ products in its February–May 2026 real-world protection test.
Webroot Essentials remains a reasonable alternative when its device-count options, compatibility, password manager, or current subscription price fit your setup better. However, Webroot was not included in either cited laboratory round, so the available evidence does not support a direct claim that Bitdefender defeated Webroot in a head-to-head test.

Choose Bitdefender when independently measured protection and system-impact evidence is your deciding factor. Choose Webroot only after confirming that Essentials supports every target device and that its included features and total subscription cost are preferable for your household.
What the 2026 independent tests actually show
AV-TEST: Bitdefender Total Security 27.0 received a perfect category score
AV-TEST continuously evaluated 14 home-user security products during March and April 2026. The Windows 11 assessment used default settings, current publicly available versions, realistic usage scenarios and contemporary real-world threats. Products could update themselves and query cloud services during testing.

Bitdefender Total Security version 27.0 received the maximum 6 points for Protection, 6 for Performance and 6 for Usability. That is 18 out of 18 possible points on AV-TEST’s scale. AV-TEST’s TOP PRODUCT designation begins at 17.5 points, so this result cleared that threshold.
The product identity matters: this was Bitdefender Total Security 27.0, not a test of Bitdefender Antivirus Plus. Total Security and Antivirus Plus are different consumer tiers, and their included tools can differ. The score is useful evidence about the tested Total Security build under AV-TEST’s conditions; it is not a promise that every Bitdefender edition behaves identically on every computer.
AV-Comparatives: Bitdefender reached the highest award level
AV-Comparatives announced its Consumer Real-World Protection Test covering February through May 2026 on 15 June 2026. The round assessed 20 consumer security programs. The lab examined whether threats could alter the test system and also measured false positives.

Seven products received the lab’s highest award level, Advanced+, and Bitdefender was among them. The announcement identifies Bitdefender Total Security among the tested products. Advanced+ is an award category, not a malware-blocking percentage or a guarantee of identical results for another Bitdefender tier.
Why Webroot’s absence must be interpreted carefully
Webroot does not appear in either of these specific 2026 product samples. That means there is no matched score from these rounds that lets you subtract one product’s result from the other’s. It does not establish that Webroot failed, blocked fewer threats or slowed a computer more than Bitdefender.
A 2026 TechRadar assessment likewise observed that major testing laboratories rarely evaluate Webroot, making direct accuracy comparisons harder. That is useful context about test coverage, but it is not a substitute for a Webroot laboratory result.

The practical conclusion is asymmetric: Bitdefender has recent primary-lab evidence you can inspect, while the cited material does not provide comparable current lab evidence for Webroot. If independent testing is your highest priority, that difference favors Bitdefender without pretending a side-by-side trial occurred.

Know which product you are comparing
Webroot Essentials
Webroot says Essentials is the new name for its SecureAnywhere products. Its current US product description lists antivirus and anti-malware protection, browser protection, anti-phishing tools and a password manager. Essentials plans are offered for one, three or five devices.
Webroot also advertises fast scans and cloud-based protection. Treat those statements as the vendor’s product positioning rather than as independently measured speed results. Scan duration and system impact can vary with storage, processor, concurrent applications, threat samples and settings.
Webroot’s support requirements page lists Windows 11 64-bit, macOS 14, macOS 15 and macOS 26, Android 11 or later, and iOS 15 or later for relevant products. Confirm that the specific Essentials plan covers the device type and operating-system version you intend to protect. Compatibility can be especially important for ARM-based Windows systems and for features that are not available on every platform.
Bitdefender Antivirus Plus
Bitdefender’s US Antivirus Plus page describes a multiplatform product for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS. The listed protections include malware and ransomware defense, scam protection, web protection and data-breach detection. The page also advertises a standard VPN allowance of 200 MB per day per device and presents one-device and three-device options.

The 200 MB allowance is limited: it is not the same as unlimited VPN use. If you need frequent video streaming, large downloads or all-day travel privacy, calculate whether that daily allowance meets your use case before treating the VPN as a deciding feature.

Antivirus Plus is not the same product as Total Security. The AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives evidence cited above concerns Total Security, so identify the tier whenever you compare test results with a product page or a checkout offer.
Compare the two subscriptions on the factors that affect your decision
1. Independent protection evidence
Bitdefender is the logical front-runner for a buyer who wants recent, recognizable laboratory evidence. Two independent 2026 programs included Bitdefender, and both reported top-level results for the tested product. Webroot’s absence leaves you with less current third-party evidence in this comparison.
Do not convert that evidence into an absolute statement that Bitdefender can never miss malware or that Webroot is unsafe. Independent tests use defined samples, configurations and dates. They are stronger than marketing claims, but they cannot reproduce every home network, browser extension, file type or attack.

Make a feature checklist before comparing prices. Webroot Essentials emphasizes core antivirus functions, browser and phishing protection, and a password manager. Bitdefender Antivirus Plus emphasizes malware, ransomware, scam and web protection, breach detection and a limited VPN allowance. Other features such as parental controls, identity services, backups or broader privacy tools can depend on the particular tier and region; do not assume they are included merely because another edition advertises them.
3. Operating systems and device count
Count every device that needs coverage, including family laptops, desktops, phones and tablets. A one-device license can be cheaper at checkout but poor value if you later need a second computer. Conversely, paying for five Webroot devices when you need only one may not be economical.
Check the operating-system requirements immediately before purchase. Webroot explicitly lists several macOS versions and Android and iOS minimums. Bitdefender Antivirus Plus advertises all four major consumer platforms, but the available product description does not provide a complete version-by-version requirement table. Verify the current requirements for your exact device and edition.

4. Usability and system impact
AV-TEST’s 6/6 Performance and 6/6 Usability scores are measured results for Total Security 27.0 in that lab round. They are useful signals, not a guarantee that Antivirus Plus or another Bitdefender tier will feel identical on your machine. Processor generation, available memory, disk speed, competing security software and background workloads all affect experience.
Webroot’s fast-scan and cloud-protection descriptions are vendor claims. Without a matched laboratory result in the cited material, you should evaluate Webroot on compatibility and the features you value rather than assign it a performance ranking.
5. First-term price versus renewal price
Antivirus subscriptions often display an introductory price that does not equal the later renewal charge. The available evidence does not establish a current universal price for either product, and prices can change by country, currency, device count, term length and promotion.
For a fair comparison, record all of the following for both products:

- List the devices. Write down each Windows, Mac, Android and iOS device that needs protection, including its operating-system version and whether it is personal or shared.
- Set your evidence priority. If recent independent testing is non-negotiable, start with Bitdefender because Total Security has current AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives results. If you are considering Webroot, accept that the cited rounds do not provide a matched laboratory comparison.
- Choose the correct tier. Compare Webroot Essentials with the Bitdefender edition you can actually buy. Keep the tested Total Security tier separate from Antivirus Plus when interpreting scores and features.
- Mark required features. Decide whether you need a password manager, anti-phishing and browser protection, breach alerts, a VPN, ransomware protection or coverage across several device types. Eliminate any plan that omits a feature you will use.

If the only attractive price applies to fewer devices than you own, the apparent bargain may disappear when you add coverage. Likewise, a VPN allowance or password manager has little value if it is unavailable on your primary platform. Wait until device count, operating-system support, required features and renewal cost all match your actual use.
Pitfalls that lead to a bad antivirus purchase
- Confusing product tiers: citing Total Security’s test score as though Antivirus Plus received the same test is inaccurate.
