A webhook timeout means the sender did not receive the acknowledgement it expected in time. It does not prove that your application failed to process the event: the receiver may have committed the change and lost the response. Before starting the work again, check your durable event and operation records, then confirm the relevant state with the provider where possible.
What a webhook timeout tells you—and what it does not
A timeout describes the sender’s view of the delivery. The sender waited for an expected response and did not receive it before its deadline. The receiver might not have received the request, might have failed before processing it, or might have completed the business operation but failed to return an acknowledgement in time.
That last case creates an ambiguous outcome. If you blindly repeat the business operation, you could create a duplicate payment, record, notification, or other side effect. Conversely, assuming the timeout means success could leave an event unprocessed. Treat the timeout as a signal to reconcile state, not as proof either way.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Provider behavior differs. Shopify treats a missing response or an error as a failed delivery and retries it; GitHub considers a delivery that exceeds its response deadline failed. Those delivery outcomes do not, by themselves, tell you whether your own side effect committed. See Shopify’s delivery guidance and GitHub’s webhook best practices.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Accept quickly, then do the slow work asynchronously
Verify the request, record it durably or place it on a durable queue, and return the provider’s expected success response as soon as that acceptance is secure. A worker can then perform slower downstream work. Do not hold the webhook connection open while waiting on unrelated services or long-running processing.
The deadlines below are provider-specific documented behavior, not a shared webhook standard. Check the provider’s current documentation for your integration.

| Provider | Documented response timing | What the guidance means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify HTTPS webhooks | One-second connection timeout and five-second overall request timeout; Shopify recommends a quick 200 OK. |
Return success after durable acceptance, and move processing to a queue or worker. A response outside 200, including a redirect, is treated as an error. |
| GitHub webhooks | Return a 2XX response within 10 seconds. | Queue work asynchronously rather than waiting for it to finish during the request. |
Shopify’s and GitHub’s published timing guidance is available in their respective delivery documentation and best-practices guide.
Build duplicate handling into the receiver
Retries and manual redeliveries mean the receiver should be prepared to see the same delivery again. Store a stable identifier and enforce deduplication durably; also make the business operation idempotent so applying the same logical event again does not repeat its effect. A simple “check, then act” without concurrency protection is not enough: simultaneous copies could both pass the check.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Validate the sender and signature before trusting the payload. For Shopify HTTPS webhooks, verify the HMAC against the raw request body.
- Write an inbox record or durable queue message with a unique key. Coordinate acceptance and deduplication with the transaction boundary so a crash cannot leave the event appearing both unaccepted and already applied.
- Return the expected success response after durable acceptance, within that provider’s deadline.
- Process asynchronously and guard the side effect with a unique event or operation key, or an equivalent transactional mechanism.
- When a duplicate is known to be safely handled, acknowledge it without applying its side effect again.
Choose the identifier according to what you intend to deduplicate. Shopify distinguishes X-Shopify-Webhook-Id, which identifies an individual delivery, from X-Shopify-Event-Id, which correlates deliveries from the same merchant action, including across separate subscriptions. GitHub’s X-GitHub-Delivery identifies a delivery; a requested redelivery uses the original delivery ID. These identifiers help recognize deliveries, but they are not proof that the business operation succeeded. See Shopify’s identifier guidance and GitHub’s redelivery guidance.
Reconcile before initiating a new attempt
Use the timeout to trigger an investigation of the event’s current state. Check the receiver’s durable records first, then use the provider’s authoritative API or resource state where available. Keep the same logical operation identity when retrying an operation; do not create a fresh identity merely because the delivery response was lost.

- Inspect receiver state. Look up the inbox or deduplication record, queue status, worker logs, transaction record, and operation log for the event or operation key.
- Check the side effect. Determine whether the relevant database change or external action committed. A job marked complete is useful evidence, but verify the actual effect when the operation crosses a system boundary.
- Query provider state when available. Retrieve the event or associated resource and compare its current state with the intended result.
- Choose the safe next action. If the effect is complete, mark the event complete and treat another delivery as a duplicate. If it did not happen, retry the same logical operation using the same idempotency key where supported. If the outcome remains unclear, retain it for reconciliation rather than creating a potentially distinct operation.
Shopify recommends periodically retrieving data through its APIs to recover missed information. Stripe provides a concrete API example: its event retrieval endpoint accepts an event ID and documents retrieval of events created in the last 30 days. That window is Stripe-specific, not a general guarantee about webhook history. See Shopify’s reconciliation guidance and Stripe’s Retrieve an event reference.
Separate sender redelivery from application retries
A provider retry or manual redelivery resends a delivery; an application retry repeats your own business operation. They are different recovery mechanisms. Sender retries are bounded and provider-specific, so an application should also have an owned path for delayed, exhausted, or missed events. Monitor delivery logs and periodically reconcile receiver records against provider state.

Shopify
Shopify documents eight retries over the next four hours when it receives no response or an error. After eight consecutive failures, an Admin API-created subscription is automatically deleted. Its delivery logs show response details, attempt count, and response time; Shopify identifies responses taking four to five seconds as a concern. Use those logs to see what Shopify observed, but inspect receiver state separately to determine whether work committed. Details are in Verify webhook deliveries and Troubleshoot webhooks.
GitHub
GitHub recommends redelivering missed deliveries after service recovery and using asynchronous queueing. A redelivery retaining the original delivery ID supports duplicate recognition, but you still need to verify whether the business effect completed. See GitHub’s best practices for using webhooks.
Stripe API idempotency is not incoming-webhook deduplication
Stripe’s idempotency feature applies to POST API requests. Repeating a connection-error request with the same key can avoid creating a second object or applying an update twice. Stripe saves and replays the first result once endpoint execution begins, including a 500 response. Keys may be pruned once they are at least 24 hours old; after pruning, reusing one starts a new request, and reusing a key with different parameters causes an error. This is a guarantee for Stripe API requests, not a universal rule for incoming webhook handlers. Read Stripe’s idempotent requests documentation.
What to monitor and preserve for recovery
- Record the provider delivery or event identifier, receipt time, validation result, durable-acceptance result, processing state, and operation key.
- Track queue age, worker failures, retry counts, and events that remain unresolved; alert on processing lag and retry exhaustion.
- Retain enough logs to connect a sender’s delivery record to the receiver’s inbox entry and the resulting side effect.
- Run periodic reconciliation against provider state where an authoritative API is available, rather than depending entirely on sender retries.
There is no universal exactly-once delivery guarantee or common retry schedule established across these providers. Design around durable acceptance, idempotent effects, observable state, and a recovery path suited to the specific provider and operation.
