WebGPU lets compatible web applications use your computer’s GPU for graphics rendering and parallel computation. It can enable demanding 3D scenes and compute-heavy tasks in the browser, but it is not an automatic speed boost: support depends on your browser, operating system and hardware, and results depend on the workload and implementation.

What is WebGPU?

The W3C WebGPU specification describes it as an API for performing operations such as rendering and computation on a graphics processing unit. In practical terms, it gives a website or web application a way to submit graphics and compute work to a system GPU. WebGPU is an API—not a GPU, a browser, or a switch that makes every site faster. The current W3C document is a Candidate Recommendation Draft dated 15 September 2026; that status does not mean every implementation is complete or behaves identically.

How an application uses the GPU

A WebGPU application requests an adapter, which represents an implementation and connection to available GPU hardware. It then requests a device, which manages GPU resources. The application prepares commands and submits them through a queue for execution. Buffers and textures represent data resources that may be backed by GPU memory.

Not all devices expose the same optional features. Applications need to check the capabilities available on the device rather than assume a particular GPU feature exists. This design lets developers build for supported capabilities and handle systems that cannot provide them.

Graphics and computation

WebGPU covers rendering and compute, so it can be used for browser-based 3D scenes and games as well as tasks such as image or video processing and machine-learning operations. These are potential use cases, not guarantees that a specific page, game, or model will run faster. Performance depends on the workload, implementation, and system.

Does WebGPU work in my browser?

Support has expanded across Chrome, Firefox, and Safari, but availability still depends on browser version, operating system, and hardware. MDN marks the GPU interface as having limited availability. Its documentation also says WebGPU is restricted to secure contexts, such as HTTPS pages, in supporting browsers, and can be used in web workers as well as the main execution context.

Chrome for Developers’ overview, last updated 11 August 2025, reports that WebGPU shipped in Firefox 141 on Windows and Safari 26, alongside Chrome’s implementation. It describes Chrome’s initial rollout on ChromeOS devices with Vulkan support, Windows with Direct3D 12, and macOS; Android support came later for Android 12 or newer on Qualcomm and ARM GPUs. These are dated rollout details, not a complete compatibility list for October 2026. Check the current browser and device you plan to use rather than treating those rollout notes as a guarantee.

How a developer should check support

Feature-detect navigator.gpu, request an adapter, and handle a missing API or adapter. Then test the application on its target browsers and devices. A browser exposing the API does not guarantee that every requested capability is available on that machine.

Is WebGPU faster than WebGL?

There is no universal answer. WebGPU offers access to modern GPU capabilities that WebGL does not, and Chrome for Developers says it can reduce JavaScript work for the same graphics. That is a qualitative vendor statement, not a quantified cross-device guarantee. A comparison should use the same workload on the target device and account for implementation effort and library maturity as well as measured performance.

For machine-learning inference, Chrome for Developers’ 2025 overview says WebGPU can deliver “more than three times improvements in machine learning model inferences.” The overview passage does not provide enough benchmark detail to treat that figure as a general expectation. It is a Chrome statement about potential gains, not a promise for every model, browser, or computer.

Can WebGPU run machine learning in the browser?

Yes. WebGPU’s compute capabilities can support machine-learning operations in a browser. Whether a particular model runs, and how quickly, depends on its implementation and the device’s available GPU capabilities. The API makes this kind of work possible; it does not ensure that an application will use WebGPU or outperform another approach.

Do I need a new graphics card to use WebGPU?

Not necessarily. WebGPU uses the system GPU when a compatible browser, operating system, and hardware combination supports it. The documented rollout spans different platforms and graphics backends, but it is not a complete current hardware compatibility matrix. Check support on your existing system first; the API’s existence alone is not a reason to buy new hardware.

Where can I learn WebGPU?

Chrome for Developers’ WebGPU overview points to documentation, samples, a WGSL tour, and further learning resources. These are useful starting points for understanding the API and experimenting with examples; a working sample still depends on browser and device support.
