To create WebAR with a software development company, define the user interaction and tracking method first, then require a device-tested prototype, clear ownership of code and 3D assets, and a documented hosting and maintenance plan. WebAR runs in a browser rather than a separately installed app, but camera permissions, browser support, network speed, device graphics capability, and platform licensing determine whether the experience works reliably.
What a WebAR development company actually delivers
WebAR is an augmented-reality experience opened from a web link, QR code, campaign page, or product package. A visitor grants camera access in a supported browser and sees digital content aligned with the real world. The visitor does not need to download a dedicated AR application, which removes an important adoption barrier for campaigns, retail demonstrations, events, education, and product visualization.
A software development company can turn that idea into a production service rather than a concept demo. Its work may include user-flow design, web development, camera and tracking integration, 3D asset preparation, animation, sound, analytics, deployment, device testing, and post-launch support. These capabilities are commonly described on providers’ own service pages, so treat them as claims to verify rather than independent evidence of quality.
- Experience design: map the entry point, permission prompt, onboarding instructions, interaction, call to action, and exit path.
- AR implementation: connect image targets, face effects, world tracking, or another technique to the browser experience.
- Content production: model, texture, rig, animate, compress, and deliver 3D objects, effects, audio, and visual overlays.
- Web delivery: provide the landing page, QR-code destination, responsive interface, analytics hooks, and deployment configuration.
- Validation: test representative iOS and Android phones, browsers, lighting conditions, network speeds, and permission states.
- Handoff and operations: transfer source code, assets, domains, hosting accounts, documentation, and a plan for updates and incident response.
Ask for a demonstration on the phones and browsers your audience will use. A smooth demo on one recent handset does not establish compatibility across your real customer base.

Define the WebAR experience before comparing companies
Estimates are meaningful only after the interaction is specific. “A WebAR campaign” could mean a simple image-triggered animation or a multi-step product configurator with 3D models, analytics, content management, and commerce links. Write a short experience brief that answers the following questions.
Audience and entry point
State where people encounter the experience: packaging, a poster, an event screen, an email, a social post, or a normal website. A QR code can open the correct URL, but the page still needs clear instructions for camera permission and adequate lighting. Decide whether users may enter anonymously or whether an account, age gate, location check, or consent notice is required.
Interaction and outcome
Describe what the visitor should do and what success means. Examples include placing a virtual product in a room, trying on a face effect, scanning an illustration to reveal a story, or viewing a campaign animation. Specify the final action—save an image, share a result, visit a store, submit a lead, or simply complete an interaction—so the company can design measurable events instead of an attractive but untestable demo.

Choose the tracking approach first
Tracking determines the technical dependencies, asset preparation, testing effort, and fallback behavior. Require each company to explain why its proposed mode fits your scene and what happens on an unsupported device.
| Tracking mode | Typical interaction | Important dependencies | Questions for the proposal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Image targets | A poster, package, card, or illustration triggers digital content. | The target must be visually distinctive and remain visible enough for detection; lighting, angle, and print quality affect reliability. | Which target images will be tested? How much of the target may be occluded? What instruction appears when detection fails? |
| Face effects | Filters, masks, makeup, glasses, hats, or other effects follow a user’s face. | Front-camera permissions, face-tracking capability, privacy messaging, and performance on older phones. | How are multiple faces handled? Is any camera data stored? What is the fallback if face tracking is unavailable? |
| World tracking | A user places or moves around a virtual object in a room or outdoor space. | Motion and environmental sensing, capable hardware, stable surfaces, lighting, and more demanding 3D rendering. | What floor or surface detection is required? How does the experience behave on devices without the needed capability? |
| WebXR or mixed approaches | A browser experience uses an available immersive or augmented-reality session, sometimes with a non-AR fallback. | Browser and operating-system support varies; session permissions and hardware capabilities must be checked at runtime. | Which browsers enter the immersive mode? What two-dimensional web experience appears when WebXR is unavailable? |
Do not select a vendor solely because it advertises every tracking mode. Ask for a small proof of the hardest interaction—often world tracking, multi-face effects, or a heavy model—on representative target devices before signing the full build.
How a custom WebAR project should proceed
- Discovery and technical brief: document audience, entry point, tracking, content, target countries, privacy requirements, analytics, call to action, launch date, and supported devices.
- Feasibility prototype: build the riskiest interaction with temporary assets. Test camera permission, tracking stability, loading time, and fallback behavior before investing in polished content.
- Experience and interface design: create the landing page, permission guidance, calibration instructions, interaction controls, accessibility labels, error messages, and completion path.
- Asset production and optimization: model or import 3D content, compress textures, reduce polygon and draw-call cost, create animation levels, and prepare image targets. Keep original working files, not only exported binaries.
- Implementation: connect the web front end, AR engine or framework, analytics events, content data, sound, sharing, and any product or campaign system.
- Cross-device quality assurance: test the agreed iOS and Android phones, browsers, orientations, permission choices, network conditions, lighting, target distance, and interruption cases such as an incoming call.
- Acceptance and launch: verify performance against written criteria, confirm domain and hosting ownership, publish through the client’s accounts where possible, and monitor real sessions.
- Maintenance: schedule browser and operating-system checks, content updates, dependency upgrades, security fixes, analytics review, and a response process for broken links or platform changes.
What to put in a request for proposal
Send every candidate the same project brief and request answers in the same format. This exposes omissions that a polished sales demonstration can hide.
| RFP area | Require a specific answer |
|---|---|
| Tracking and fallback | State the tracking mode, browser capabilities, hardware assumptions, detection limits, and the usable non-AR fallback. |
| Device matrix | List exact iOS and Android phones and browser versions to be tested, test dates, performance metrics, and pass/fail acceptance criteria. |
| Content scope | Identify who supplies or creates 3D models, image targets, animation, sound, translations, accessibility text, and legal notices. |
| Measurement | Specify events such as entry, permission granted, target detected, object placed, completion, share, and conversion, plus data retention and consent handling. |
| Ownership | Confirm delivery of source code, 3D originals, textures, project files, image targets, domains, deployment accounts, documentation, and build instructions. |
| Hosting and security | Name the hosting location, expected operating costs, certificate and domain responsibility, backups, access control, logging, privacy obligations, and incident response. |
| Licensing | Itemize runtime, SDK, engine, asset, font, audio, analytics, and third-party service licenses. State whether each is transferable and what happens if a supplier is discontinued. |
| Support | Define warranty period, response times, browser updates, content changes, monitoring, and rates or limits for ongoing work. |
Ask for relevant shipped work, not a generic portfolio. A face-filter campaign does not prove that a company can deliver stable room-scale placement, and a desktop 3D site does not prove mobile camera performance.

Device, browser, and network testing that matters
WebAR is constrained by the weakest important part of the delivery chain: the browser, camera permission, graphics processor, memory, or network. Agree on a target-device matrix before development. Include both current and older phones that represent your audience, not only the devices used by the project team.
- Browser entry: test the QR destination, redirects, HTTPS, orientation changes, private-browsing behavior where relevant, and links opened inside social-app webviews.
- Permission states: test first visit, permission denied, permission previously denied in system settings, camera already in use, and a user who changes their mind.
- Performance: record initial page load, time to camera readiness, time to target detection or placement, frame-rate stability, memory pressure, battery impact, and recovery after backgrounding.
- Environment: test bright and dim light, reflective or low-contrast targets, cluttered rooms, moving users, slow movement, and temporary loss of tracking.
- Connectivity: test a fast Wi-Fi connection and slower mobile data. Decide whether assets are cached, streamed progressively, or replaced by a lighter fallback.
- Usability and accessibility: provide text instructions, visible focus states, sufficient contrast, motion warnings, captions or mute controls for sound, and a non-camera route to essential information.
Require a written acceptance sheet. “Works on mobile” is not a test criterion; “target detected within the agreed distance on the named browsers under the stated lighting condition” is.
3D assets and performance are part of development
Large models and textures can make an otherwise correct WebAR build unusable. Ask the company to explain its optimization budget: polygon reduction, texture dimensions and formats, level-of-detail variants, compressed downloads, lazy loading, animation compression, and removal of unseen geometry. Preserve high-resolution originals separately so future campaigns do not require rebuilding from an optimized file.
Clarify who owns commissioned models and whether any stock textures, sounds, fonts, or animation libraries impose redistribution limits. A license that permits a one-time campaign may not permit resale, client handoff, or indefinite hosting. The contract should identify the permitted territory, duration, audience size if applicable, and whether the client can edit or reuse the asset.
Platform choice and the current 8th Wall transition
A WebAR company may use a hosted platform, an open-source engine, or a custom web stack. The choice affects source-code access, hosting, runtime licenses, available tracking features, and migration risk. Require the proposal to name the exact framework and version, not just “WebXR” or “WebAR.”
One especially important current change concerns 8th Wall. Its hosted platform retired on February 28, 2026. Official documentation says experiences already published on that hosted service continue to run until February 28, 2027. The 8th Wall Open Source Team wrote in its March 2, 2026 announcement, “As of February 28, 2026, that transition is complete.” Do not treat the old cloud editor or hosted service as an available workflow for a new project.
The current materials distinguish two different components:
- MIT-licensed engine framework: includes the core architecture and features such as Face Effects, Image Targets, and Sky Effects, but excludes SLAM.
- Distributed engine binary: includes SLAM and is governed by a binary license. Official documentation states that it does not include VPS, Maps, or Hand Tracking.
If an existing campaign uses an 8th Wall hosted link, establish an export, migration, or replacement-hosting plan before February 28, 2027. For a new build, verify the current documentation and applicable license at contract time because features and terms can change. The company should explain which component is used, where it runs, which features are unavailable, and how the client can rebuild or replace it.

Ownership, hosting, and continuity protections
Put operational control in the client’s name whenever practical. The domain registrar, cloud account, analytics property, certificate management, source repository, and app-related credentials should not depend on one employee’s personal account or a vendor’s inaccessible workspace.
Define a handoff package that includes source code, build and deployment instructions, environment variables delivered through a secure process, 3D originals, optimized exports, image targets, design files, analytics event definitions, test results, and a list of third-party dependencies. Specify how quickly credentials and files are transferred if the contract ends.
Ask who pays recurring hosting, storage, bandwidth, engine, analytics, and asset-license charges. Require notice periods for price or license changes and a supported export path if a platform is retired. A low initial estimate can become expensive when the client discovers that the runtime, hosting account, or editable assets remain locked to the supplier.

One company press page reports more than 2,000 commercial experiences since its first full year in 2019 and claims potential access to over 5 billion smartphones across iOS and Android, computers, and headsets. Those are company-reported figures, not independently audited market statistics or a guarantee that every device is compatible. Use such claims as context, then rely on your own device tests and contractual acceptance criteria.

The camera prompt is denied
Show a plain-language explanation before requesting access, provide a settings instruction after denial, and offer a non-camera page with the essential campaign message. Never assume the browser will ask again automatically.
The target is not detected
Improve target contrast and visual detail, provide distance and lighting guidance, test printed and on-screen versions, and display a recovery instruction instead of leaving the user at a blank camera view.
The scene loads slowly or overheats the phone
Reduce initial asset weight, load optional content after the first interaction, provide level-of-detail variants, compress textures, and measure on older target phones and slower networks. A lighter fallback is preferable to a technically complete experience that users abandon.

Tracking drifts or disappears
Explain the environmental requirement, pause or re-anchor the object when confidence drops, and let the user restart calibration. World tracking should not silently continue presenting an object in the wrong location.
A platform or vendor becomes unavailable
Keep code and editable assets under client-controlled accounts, maintain deployment instructions, record licenses, and rehearse an export or replacement-hosting procedure. For existing 8th Wall hosted links, complete that planning before February 28, 2027.
Launch checklist
- Tracking mode, supported browsers, named devices, and fallback are documented.
- Camera permission, privacy notice, analytics consent, and data retention behavior are approved.
- 3D originals, optimized assets, image targets, source code, and licenses are stored in client-controlled locations.
- HTTPS domain, hosting, backups, monitoring, and renewal responsibilities are assigned.
- Acceptance tests cover performance, lighting, network speed, orientation, denial states, and loss of tracking.
- QR codes and campaign links are tested on physical materials before distribution.
- Support contacts, browser-update checks, content-edit procedures, and platform-migration steps are written down.
Frequently asked questions
Does WebAR eliminate the need for an app?
It removes the need for a dedicated installation for the supported browser experience. It does not remove device, browser, camera-permission, network, or hardware requirements, so a fallback remains important.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should a company build with WebXR or a separate AR engine?
That depends on the tracking mode, target browsers, licensing, and required features. Ask the company to demonstrate the exact interaction on your device matrix and to document what happens when the preferred capability is unavailable.
Is there a standard price for custom WebAR development?
No dependable standard price is established. Scope varies with tracking, 3D production, optimization, analytics, content management, device coverage, hosting, licensing, and support. Comparable written proposals are more useful than a generic package price.
What should happen to an existing hosted 8th Wall experience?
Confirm whether it is one of the already-published experiences covered by the continuation period, then arrange export, migration, or replacement hosting before February 28, 2027. Check the current official documentation and license terms rather than assuming the former hosted workflow remains available.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a WebAR project work without mobile data?
Only if the required page and assets are already available locally or through a suitable cached experience. Plan for a network connection unless the company specifically designs, tests, and documents an offline-capable fallback.
Recommended Free Tools
Who should own the QR-code destination and domain?
The client should normally register and control the domain and redirect destination, with the development company granted the access needed to deploy. This prevents a campaign from breaking when a vendor relationship ends.
Are company-reported WebAR reach figures proof of compatibility?
No. Claims such as access to billions of smartphones describe potential reach, not active users or guaranteed support. Compatibility must be established through named-device and browser testing.
The Bottom Line
A capable WebAR development company is the one that proves the chosen tracking approach on your real devices, states limitations and fallbacks, transfers code and assets, and protects you from hosting and licensing surprises. Make those requirements contractual before commissioning polished content.
