You can read and write NFC tags from a web page with the Web NFC API, but only when the browser, device, and tag support it. Web NFC works with NDEF-formatted messages; it is not a general interface for every NFC card or low-level NFC protocol.
Check whether Web NFC fits your setup
Before building a workflow, confirm that the page will run in a secure context, the browser and device support Web NFC, and the tag can use NDEF. MDN describes the API as having limited availability, so check its current browser compatibility table rather than assuming support across mobile or desktop browsers. The API requires HTTPS in supporting browsers.
- Page: Serve it over HTTPS.
- Browser and device: Use a browser with Web NFC support on a device with NFC hardware.
- Tag: Use an NDEF-compatible tag, such as a tag or sticker formatted for NDEF messages.
Web NFC is suitable for exchanging NDEF records. It is not the right approach for proprietary NFC technologies or tasks that need low-level NFC I/O.

Read an NFC tag
Feature-detect NDEFReader before showing a scan control. Call scan() in response to the user’s action, listen for reading to receive the message, and handle scan setup errors separately from a tag-reading error.
#1 Best Overall
- It not only supports Mifare cards and Class A and B cards conforming to the ISO 14443 standard, but also supports NFC and FeliCa contactless technology.
- This is a USB hot-pluggable device that complies with the CCID standard and is ideal for applications such as personal identity security authentication and online micropayments.
- This is a USB full-speed device (12 Mbps), which reads NFC tags at 106 kbps、212 Kbps and 242 Kbps, allowing faster read and write speeds and higher efficiency
- To increase the safety factor, you can choose to configure an ISO7816-3 compliant SAM card slot in the ACR122.
- Widely used in areas such as access control, electronic payment, bus e-ticketing, highway toll collection systems, network verification, logistics, and supply chain management.
async function scanNfc() {
if (!("NDEFReader" in window)) {
console.error("Web NFC is not available in this browser.");
return;
}
const reader = new NDEFReader();
reader.addEventListener("reading", ({ message, serialNumber }) => {
console.log("Serial number:", serialNumber);
for (const record of message.records) {
console.log(record.recordType, record.data);
}
});
reader.addEventListener("readingerror", () => {
console.error("A tag was detected but could not be read.");
});
try {
await reader.scan();
} catch (error) {
console.error("Could not start NFC scanning:", error);
}
}
The scan() promise can reject, for example, if permission is denied or the necessary hardware is unavailable. A readingerror event is different: it indicates that a nearby tag was detected but could not be read. The browser may ask the user to grant NFC permission. See MDN’s scan() method documentation for the operation and its failure cases.
Decode and validate record data
The message.records collection contains NDEF records, not automatically trusted application data. For a text record, decode its bytes using the record’s encoding and format, then validate the resulting value before using it in application logic. The W3C Web NFC Community Group explainer shows decoding with TextDecoder and DataView; the appropriate decoding depends on the record format.

Write an NDEF message
Create an NDEFReader and pass an NDEF message to write(). This example writes a URL record:
async function writeNfcUrl() {
if (!("NDEFReader" in window)) {
console.error("Web NFC is not available in this browser.");
return;
}
const writer = new NDEFReader();
try {
await writer.write({
records: [{ recordType: "url", data: "https://example.com/" }],
});
console.log("NDEF message written.");
} catch (error) {
console.error("NFC write failed:", error);
}
}
Tell users what the page will write before they present a tag. A successful write is not guaranteed: permission, adapter, or transfer problems can cause the promise to reject. MDN documents the write() method, including accepted message forms and write failures.

When the user must choose a tag first
If the page needs to discover a tag before writing to it, coordinate a read event with the write operation. MDN’s NDEFReader documentation describes this pattern. An AbortController can cancel scans or writes when a user leaves the relevant view or a timeout is reached.
Account for page visibility and operation lifecycle
The W3C Web NFC Community Group explainer limits Web NFC to a visible, top-level browsing context. Operations are suspended while the document is hidden and resume as appropriate when it becomes visible. In a single-page app, decide what should happen to an active scan when the user navigates away or backgrounds the page; cancellation can prevent an operation from outliving the screen that started it.

Do not treat tag contents as trustworthy
The W3C Web NFC Community Group explainer states: “NFC (with NDEF) is not secure for authenticity or integrity.” A tag can be read by others and, unless it is read-only, written by others. Web NFC does not automatically encrypt records or attach signatures. A URL on a tag is therefore not trustworthy simply because it arrived over NFC.
