Web authoring software is any software or online service people use to create or modify content for publication on the web. It includes far more than HTML editors: content management systems, website builders, document-conversion tools, multimedia editors and platforms where users publish posts, images or discussions all fit the category.
What is web authoring software?
The W3C Web Accessibility Initiative defines authoring tools as software and services that authors—including web developers, designers and writers—use to produce web content, from static pages to dynamic web applications. In practical terms, a tool qualifies when it helps someone create, edit, generate or manage material that will appear online.
That broad definition means a tool does not need to look like a traditional webpage editor or require users to write HTML. A system can generate pages from stored content, turn a document into web markup, or let people publish directly to a hosted platform. W3C’s ATAG overview describes the category and its range of users and content.

What kinds of tools count?
Web authoring software is an umbrella category. Its main forms differ in how content is created and how much control users have over the underlying code.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Code and visual webpage editors: Tools for writing or visually arranging web pages, including WYSIWYG editors that show an approximation of the finished page while authors work.
- Content management systems (CMSs): Systems for creating, organizing and publishing website content, often with pages generated from stored information.
- Website builders and site-generation software: Tools that let people assemble and publish websites, including no-code builders, learning management systems, courseware and content aggregators.
- Document-conversion tools: Office or productivity software that converts documents into web technologies, for example through a “Save as HTML” function.
- Multimedia and image editors: Tools used to create or modify images and other media intended for web publication.
- Publishing platforms and communities: Blogs, wikis, photo-sharing services, forums and social networks that allow users to add and publish content.
W3C’s guidance on selecting and using authoring tools also identifies database-driven page generation and site-management tools. These examples show why “web authoring software” describes a family of tools, not one specific product type.
How is it different from an HTML editor?
An HTML editor is one kind of web authoring tool, but the two terms are not interchangeable. An HTML editor focuses on writing or editing markup. Web authoring software also covers tools that hide the markup, generate it from visual layouts or stored content, convert another document into web content, or provide a service where users publish directly.

What should you check when choosing a tool?
Start with the type of content and workflow you need. Then assess whether the tool helps you create accessible content and whether its output is sound. W3C recommends considering accessibility support and valid markup when selecting authoring tools; these are criteria to investigate, not guarantees about any particular product.

- Match the tool to the work: Decide whether you are building pages, managing a larger site, converting documents, creating media or publishing community content.
- Check authoring accessibility: Consider whether people with disabilities can use the tool’s interface and perform its authoring tasks.
- Check the accessibility of its output: Look for features that help authors create accessible web content. A usable authoring interface alone does not establish that the resulting pages are accessible.
- Inspect markup quality when relevant: If the tool generates HTML, check whether the markup is valid and whether it needs review or cleanup. W3C notes that a cleanup tool can supplement a product that does not produce valid markup.
- Confirm the level of control: Determine whether visual editing is sufficient or whether the project requires code-level access and control over generated content.
Why accessibility is part of the definition
Authoring tools affect accessibility in two connected ways: authors with disabilities need to be able to use the tools, and the tools should help authors create web content that is accessible to others. The W3C’s Authoring Tool Accessibility Guidelines (ATAG) address both goals. ATAG 2.0 is a W3C Recommendation and part of W3C’s accessibility-guidelines family.
These goals are distinct. A tool may have an accessible interface yet provide little help with accessible output, or offer accessibility features that are difficult for some authors to use. Evaluating both sides gives a more complete picture than looking only at the finished page or the editing experience.
