A web application server runs or supports the server-side work that turns a web request into an application response. It may generate dynamic content, coordinate application components, or connect to data. Its role is distinct from simply delivering static files, although one product or deployment can perform both jobs.
What is a web application server?
The term describes software that runs or supports application logic behind a web application. It is a functional description, not one universally distinct product category: application-server capabilities may be built into a broader runtime or supplied by a separate component.
For a dynamic page, the application logic might combine a template with database content to create HTML. An HTTP web server can then send that response to the browser. MDN describes a dynamic web server as a static web server plus additional software, most commonly an application server and a database: MDN: What is a web server?

The HTTP server or runtime receives the request and directs it to the relevant application component.

The component performs the work needed for the response. It may use other resources, such as application beans or a database, to produce content.

The runtime formats the response, and the HTTP server returns it to the client.

In the Jakarta Servlet model, a servlet container supplies request-response network services, decodes requests, formats responses, and manages servlet lifecycles. It maps requests to web components, which can use other resources to create content. The container turns the response object into an HTTP response. The Jakarta Servlet Specification states that a servlet container is part of a web server or application server: Jakarta Servlet Specification, section 1.2.
Web server vs. application server: what is the difference?

These are different functions, not necessarily separate machines or products. A web server may handle static delivery while an application runtime handles dynamic work; implementations can combine the two. A servlet container, in particular, can be part of either a web server or an application server.

Is Apache Tomcat a web server or an application server?
Apache Tomcat is best described precisely as a Java servlet and JSP container. It can be used to develop and deploy web applications and web services; that does not mean every product called an application server has Tomcat’s scope or capabilities. Tomcat’s documentation identifies version 11.0.25, dated August 12, 2026, as implementing Servlet 6.1 and Pages 4.0: Tomcat 11 documentation.
How Tomcat routes and deploys applications
In Tomcat 10.1’s documented model, a web application is based on a Web Application Archive (WAR) or its unpacked directory. Tomcat selects the application for an HTTP request by matching the request URI to the application’s context path. These are Tomcat-specific conventions, not rules for every application runtime. “Application server” can cover different implementation scopes, so compare the capabilities relevant to your application rather than relying on the label alone:

Programming model and APIs: Check which application technologies and interfaces the runtime supports.

Deployment format: Find out how applications are packaged and deployed, such as whether the runtime expects an archive or a directory.

HTTP integration: Establish whether the runtime handles HTTP traffic itself or is intended to work with a separate web server or reverse proxy.

Key distinction
A web application server’s defining job is to support the application-side processing behind a response. An HTTP web server handles web traffic and may serve static content. Those jobs can be separate or combined; the precise capabilities depend on the implementation.
