A weather balloon is the lift vehicle; a radiosonde is the instrument package hanging beneath it. Together they form an upper-air sounding system. The balloon carries the sonde through the atmosphere, the sonde measures pressure, temperature and relative humidity, and a radio link sends those observations to a ground station. Tracking the sonde’s changing position—usually with GPS—allows wind speed and direction aloft to be calculated.

That distinction matters because a balloon is not itself a weather sensor, and wind is not read by the sonde’s temperature or humidity probes. The complete operation also includes suspension line, parachute, transmitter, receiving and tracking equipment, and software that processes and quality-controls the data. The result is a vertical profile used in forecasts, severe-weather analysis, aviation and marine operations, research and climate records.

The short answer: balloon, radiosonde and sounding are different things

In ordinary conversation, “weather balloon” can mean the entire launch and flight. Technically, the balloon and radiosonde have different jobs:

Part or term What it does What it does not do
Weather balloon A gas-filled lift vehicle, normally filled with hydrogen or helium, that carries the payload upward. As outside pressure falls, the balloon expands. It does not directly measure temperature, humidity, pressure or wind.
Radiosonde A small instrument package with sensors, a transmitter and usually a positioning device. It samples the atmosphere during ascent and radios the observations to the ground. Its sensors do not directly measure wind speed and direction.
Flight train The connected airborne assembly: balloon, line or twine, radiosonde and often a parachute. A station may add other mission-specific components. It is not a single universal hardware design; station procedures and equipment vary.
Ground system A receiving antenna, tracking equipment, processing software and quality-control procedures turn the radio stream into a usable sounding. It is not carried by the balloon, although it is essential to the observation.
Sounding The time-ordered vertical profile produced from the ascent: pressure, temperature, humidity, position and derived winds at many levels. It is not one surface reading or a measurement of every location in a region.

NOAA summarizes the central relationship by describing a radiosonde as a small instrument package suspended below a balloon filled with hydrogen or helium. See NOAA JetStream’s radiosonde explanation for the agency’s overview.

What is attached to a weather balloon?

The balloon and lifting gas

Operational meteorological balloons are designed to expand as they rise. Hydrogen or helium supplies lift; the choice depends on station policy, availability, safety requirements and local procedures. The balloon is sized and filled so the attached train ascends at a useful rate while carrying the sonde and any approved accessories. The gas envelope is a vehicle, not a measurement package.

During ascent, atmospheric pressure outside the envelope decreases. The gas therefore occupies more volume, and the balloon eventually reaches a point where the material can no longer stretch. The envelope bursts at high altitude rather than remaining intact for the descent. The National Weather Service fact sheet gives typical operational figures, but those values are not guarantees for every balloon, launch site or weather condition.

Suspension line and parachute

A line or twine keeps the radiosonde below the balloon and separates it from the turbulent wake immediately around the envelope. A parachute is commonly included so the instrument descends more slowly after the balloon bursts. The exact line length, parachute design and attachment arrangement are system-specific; the NWS Charleston upper-air description illustrates the sort of flight train used at an operational station.

The radiosonde package

The sonde normally contains sensors for pressure, temperature and relative humidity, a radio transmitter, power and electronics, and a way to report its position. A launch team prepares and checks the package before release, connects it to the line, and configures the ground receiver to accept its transmission. Some balloons carry additional payloads in other scientific or educational missions, but an operational meteorological sounding is centered on the radiosonde and its tracking system.

What does a radiosonde measure?

Direct sensor measurements

The direct atmospheric measurements identified by NOAA are:

  • Pressure: the ambient atmospheric pressure at the sonde’s current level.
  • Temperature: the air temperature around the sensor.
  • Relative humidity: the amount of water vapor relative to the air’s temperature-dependent saturation level.

These values are sampled repeatedly during the ascent, so the output is a profile rather than a single number. Pressure decreases upward and, together with the other observations and a height reference, helps describe the vertical structure of the atmosphere. The NOAA JetStream page explicitly separates these three sensor measurements from the wind information obtained by tracking.

Position is measured so wind can be derived

The sonde’s location changes as it is carried by the air. GPS is commonly used to report that position; some systems can also use radio direction finding. Comparing positions over time gives the motion of the sonde relative to the ground. That motion is used to calculate wind speed and direction at successive heights.

NOAA makes a technical distinction: a radiosonde observation strictly refers to pressure, temperature and relative humidity, while a position-tracked wind observation is a rawinsonde observation. In operational documents and everyday speech, “radiosonde observation” is often used broadly for the complete upper-air report. This terminology is explained in NOAA’s terminology note and the NWS fact sheet.

Output in a sounding How it is obtained Interpretation
Pressure Pressure sensor in the radiosonde Direct observation at the sonde’s level
Temperature Temperature sensor Direct observation at the sonde’s level
Relative humidity Humidity sensor Direct observation at the sonde’s level
Position GPS or another tracking method Location of the moving sonde over time
Wind speed and direction Calculated from successive position observations Derived motion of the air carrying the sonde
Geopotential height and selected standard levels Computed and formatted by processing systems from the observations Convenient levels and variables for analysis, models and archives

How a weather-balloon sounding works, step by step

  1. Prepare the site and equipment. Staff inflate a purpose-made balloon with hydrogen or helium, activate and check the radiosonde, connect the flight train and ready the receiving and tracking system. Launch preparation differs among stations and national services. The NWS Reno balloon-tour page shows the operational sequence and the role of the ground equipment.
  2. Release the flight train. The balloon lifts the sonde and parachute from the launch site. The ground system establishes a reliable radio link and begins recording observations and position.
  3. Sample while ascending. As the balloon climbs, the sonde repeatedly senses pressure, temperature and relative humidity. A typical NWS ascent rate is about 300 metres per minute, or 1,000 feet per minute; wind, payload and balloon condition can change the actual rate.
  4. Transmit the observations. The transmitter sends the sensor readings and position data to a sensitive ground-tracking antenna. The receiving station time-stamps and checks the incoming stream so gaps, interference or implausible values can be identified.
  5. Calculate winds. Processing compares the sonde’s successive positions. The resulting horizontal motion provides wind speed and direction at the corresponding portions of the climb. Wind is therefore a derived product, not a direct reading from the temperature and humidity sensors.
  6. Build the vertical profile. Software organizes the ascent into a sounding with observations at measured and selected standard levels. Quality-control routines screen the data before products are sent to forecasters, models and archives. The NWS Upper-air Observations Program describes the operational network and data flow.
  7. Use the sounding. Forecasters and researchers compare the profile with model analyses, satellite products, radar and surface observations. The profile reveals how conditions change with height, which is crucial for stability, cloud formation, precipitation type, storm organization and aviation hazards.
  8. Continue until the balloon bursts. Expansion eventually ruptures the envelope. The radiosonde then descends under its parachute while the ground system may continue to track it for part of the descent.

How high, how fast and how far can a sounding travel?

Published figures describe typical operations, not universal limits. The following values are tied to the source and should be read with that scope:

Figure Source context What it means
60–80 grams NWS radiosonde fact sheet Stated weight range for the radiosonde package; other payload configurations can differ.
About 300 metres per minute (1,000 feet per minute) NWS radiosonde fact sheet Typical ascent rate, not a guaranteed rate at every station or in every wind regime.
More than 35 km (115,000 feet) NWS radiosonde fact sheet Typical-flight description of how high a flight can exceed; it is not a promised ceiling for every launch.
More than 300 km (about 180 miles) of drift NWS radiosonde fact sheet Typical-flight description of possible horizontal travel before or during descent; landing location can be far from the station.
Over 200 km of drift NOAA JetStream A separate NOAA description of drift distance. The two figures reflect typical descriptions, not a single hard maximum.

Balloon size, fill volume, temperature, jet-stream winds, launch latitude and the point at which the envelope bursts all affect the trajectory. A launch team cannot infer the landing site simply from the station’s location or the direction of the wind at the surface.

When are radiosondes launched?

Routine upper-air observations are generally scheduled at 00Z and 12Z (Coordinated Universal Time), allowing stations around the world to provide broadly synchronized snapshots for weather models. Additional releases may be ordered when conditions or forecast uncertainty justify them. The NWS program page describes extra SPECI launches at 06Z and 18Z or at other times as needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Schedules, station counts and launch practices are regional. The NWS program’s stated network includes 92 radiosonde stations in North America and the Pacific Islands, with NWS support for 10 Caribbean stations. NOAA JetStream describes about 1,300 upper-air stations worldwide. These are agency network descriptions and can change as stations, observing programs and international partners change; they are not a promise that every location launches twice daily.

Why the profile matters to weather forecasting and science

Numerical weather prediction

Weather models need observations through the depth of the troposphere and, for some applications, the lower stratosphere. A sounding supplies a time-stamped vertical profile of temperature, humidity, pressure and winds that can be compared with and assimilated into model analyses. Unlike a satellite retrieval that samples broad areas indirectly, the sonde physically travels through a column of air near its route.

Severe-storm assessment

Temperature and moisture layers determine atmospheric stability, while wind changes with height influence storm rotation, organization and movement. Forecasters use the measured profile to evaluate ingredients for thunderstorms, heavy rain, icing and turbulence. One sounding describes the atmosphere near one launch and time; it cannot represent every storm or every point in a large region.

Aviation and marine operations

Winds aloft, temperature changes, humidity and the height of significant layers support flight planning, turbulence and icing assessments, marine forecasts and operational decisions. The NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory overview explains how upper-air observations improve forecasts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Research, pollution and satellite validation

NOAA lists weather and climate research, air-pollution studies and satellite-data ground truth among radiosonde uses. Archived profiles also support analysis of long-term atmospheric behavior. NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information weather-balloon page describes archived upper-air data products containing temperature, humidity, wind, pressure and geopotential height.

What happens after the balloon bursts?

The expanded envelope ruptures at altitude. The radiosonde and any connected hardware begin descending, and a parachute slows the fall in the NWS descriptions. Winds can carry the descending package a substantial distance, so it may land far from the launch site. The flight may stop transmitting before the package reaches the ground, depending on battery life, radio visibility and damage during descent.

Operational radiosondes are specialized, expendable meteorological hardware rather than consumer sensors. Whether a particular package is recovered, discarded or handled under local procedures depends on the station and the equipment design. Do not approach an unknown landed package or interfere with an active launch area; follow local safety and reporting guidance.

Weather balloon versus radiosonde: the distinctions that prevent common mistakes

Lift versus sensing

The balloon supplies buoyant force. The radiosonde supplies the measurements and radio transmission. Saying that “the balloon measures temperature” assigns the sonde’s function to the wrong component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Direct versus derived data

Pressure, temperature and relative humidity come from sensors. Wind speed and direction come from the tracked movement of the sonde. A GPS receiver reports position; processing turns successive positions into wind.

Airborne hardware versus the observing system

The airborne train cannot produce a usable sounding by itself. The ground antenna, receiver, tracking method, processing software and quality control are part of the system. Two stations may use different radiosonde models or workflows while producing comparable meteorological variables.

Sounding versus local weather report

A sounding is a vertical slice sampled along a moving path at a particular time. It complements surface stations, radar, satellites and aircraft observations; it does not replace them or describe an entire forecast area on its own.

How to read a radiosonde profile without over-interpreting it

  • Check the launch time and location. Conditions can evolve rapidly, and the profile represents the atmosphere near that station and ascent path.
  • Separate measured and calculated fields. Treat pressure, temperature and humidity as sensor observations; treat winds, standard-level heights and other formatted fields as products of tracking and processing.
  • Look for gaps or quality flags. Radio interference, sensor response limits, icing, battery problems or a lost position signal can reduce data quality.
  • Respect vertical and horizontal representativeness. The sonde samples a column that is moving with the wind. A valley station, coastline or mountain site may not represent a nearby area with different terrain or air masses.
  • Use more than one observation. Comparing neighboring soundings, radar, satellites, aircraft and surface stations gives a better picture than treating one launch as a complete description of regional weather.

Why the numbers vary by station and country

The NOAA and NWS pages are U.S. agency descriptions, while the worldwide network includes many national meteorological services and other operators. Gas handling, launch buildings, radiosonde models, telemetry frequencies, tracking methods, parachutes, quality-control thresholds and schedules can differ. A figure labeled “typical” in an NWS fact sheet should not be converted into a specification for every international station.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Even within one program, weather and logistics affect results. Strong winds can carry a flight far from its station; a damaged sensor can shorten a profile; a delayed launch can make a nominal 00Z observation occur later; and a special release can add information outside the routine schedule. The NWS observation-equipment overview and the NWS Radiosonde Observations Handbook provide program-level context rather than a universal equipment bill of materials.

Where the data goes

After reception, a station’s processing chain decodes the radio messages, associates measurements with time and position, applies checks and derives wind information. Selected levels and higher-resolution observations can then be distributed to forecast centers and archived. The resulting products may appear as plotted skew-T diagrams, text soundings, model-assimilation reports or climate-data records, depending on the user and system.

For historical work, an archive is more than a picture of the balloon path. It preserves metadata such as station, launch time, variables, levels and quality information needed to interpret the profile. NOAA NCEI’s weather-balloon data page is the appropriate starting point for its archived products.

Common questions answered precisely

Is the radiosonde the same thing as a weather balloon?

No. The balloon is the lifting envelope; the radiosonde is the instrument package suspended below it. “Weather balloon” is often used informally for the entire observing flight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a radiosonde measure wind directly?

Not with the pressure, temperature and humidity sensors. Wind speed and direction are calculated from the sonde’s tracked position, usually from GPS or radio direction finding.

How far can a weather balloon travel?

There is no single distance for every launch. The NWS fact sheet describes flights exceeding 300 km of drift, while NOAA JetStream describes drift over 200 km. Those are typical descriptions, not guaranteed limits.

Why is a parachute used?

It slows the radiosonde’s descent after the balloon bursts. The exact parachute and flight-train design depend on the operating system.

Can one sounding represent an entire region?

No. It samples a moving vertical column near one station at one time. Forecasters combine it with other observations and additional soundings to assess a broader area.
