Weapon upgrading and Weapon Amplification are separate progression systems in ARC Raiders. Upgrading moves a gun through its ordinary quality tiers and permanently improves its existing characteristics. Amplification is an additional fifth quality level unlocked through a fully upgraded Research Workstation in the Outpost; its weapon-specific branches can change how a gun behaves or what role it fills.
That distinction matters because amplification is not simply “the next upgrade,” and it is not a removable attachment. The system launched in the Frozen Trail 2.0 era with an announced initial rollout of 15 weapons, while ordinary upgrades remain the normal Gunsmith progression available to most weapons.

In everyday terms, upgrading makes the same gun better at what it already does. Amplification can make the gun behave differently, so the choice is closer to selecting a specialization than applying a stronger version of the same tier.

How ordinary weapon upgrading works
Tier progression through the Gunsmith
The weapon overview describes ordinary upgrading as a permanent improvement purchased at the Gunsmith. Most weapons use a numeral in their name to show progress through the standard tiers, with tier IV representing the top of that ordinary sequence. The number is therefore a progression marker, not an indication that the gun has been amplified.

Upgrading consumes the materials shown by the Gunsmith and applies the improvement to that weapon. The exact result is weapon-dependent: there is no single, universal stat package that every gun receives at each tier. A higher tier should be read as a better version of the same baseline design, not as a new firing mode or a new weapon class.
What an upgrade does not do
- It does not automatically unlock the fifth quality level.
- It does not turn a removable attachment into a permanent weapon change.
- It does not imply that every weapon gains the same characteristic or the same amount of improvement.
- It does not tell you which amplification branch, if any, is available later.
If you are deciding whether to spend materials on a familiar gun for the next raid, ordinary upgrading is the predictable option: it preserves the weapon’s identity while improving its established characteristics.
What Weapon Amplification adds
A fifth quality level
Embark’s official Frozen Trail preview describes Amplification as access to a “fifth quality level for a range of guns.” It is reached through the fully upgraded Research Workstation in the Outpost. This places amplification after the regular tier path rather than inside the Gunsmith’s normal numeral sequence.
Branching behavior instead of one uniform boost
Amplification is built around branching abilities and enhancements that are specific to the weapon. The branches can change a gun’s behavior or push it toward a different role. The official examples show the intended breadth of the system:
- Burletta: an amplification path can make the pistol fully automatic.
- Renegade: an example path gives the weapon a scoped configuration.
- Rattler: an incendiary configuration is paired with a 64-round magazine.
These examples are not a promise that every weapon receives those same types of options. They demonstrate why the system should not be treated as a simple percentage increase: the change can affect firing behavior, sighting or ammunition capacity and damage behavior at the same time.
The announced launch scope
Embark’s September 23, 2026 preview announced an initial rollout to 15 weapons and said more were planned. Frozen Trail 2.0 released on October 8, 2026. Because a later in-game roster can change, “15” should be understood as the announced starting rollout, not as a permanently verified count for every current build.
Where each system fits in your progression
Ordinary upgrade route
- Open the weapon options at the Gunsmith.
- Choose the weapon you want to improve.
- Review the material cost and the next standard tier shown by the game.
- Confirm the upgrade; the weapon’s ordinary progression numeral advances and the improvement remains on that weapon.
The available interface may present additional requirements for a particular gun, so use the cost and eligibility information shown in your current build rather than assuming that all weapons share one recipe.

Amplification route
- Develop the Outpost’s Research Workstation until it is fully upgraded.
- Use that workstation to check which weapons in your collection are eligible for the fifth quality level.
- Select an eligible weapon and inspect its available amplification branches.
- Compare the behavior described for each branch with the role you want the weapon to play.
- Commit to the branch only after checking the game’s current confirmation screen for any cost, warning or reset information.
The official preview establishes the workstation requirement and the branching concept, but it does not publish one universal material list or a universal reset rule. Those details can be weapon- or version-specific and should be read from the current interface.
Amplification is not a weapon mod
Removable attachments versus progression
The weapon overview separates removable weapon mods from permanent upgrades. A mod is an attachment you can manage independently of the weapon’s standard tier path. Amplification belongs to the progression system: it grants a quality level and a weapon-specific branch rather than acting like a sight, magazine or other slot item.
This distinction prevents a common mistake. If a branch changes a Burletta to full-auto or gives a Renegade a scope, that does not mean the effect is an ordinary attachment that can be moved to another gun. The branch is tied to the amplified weapon and should be evaluated as part of that weapon’s build.
The Anvil Splitter exception in Frozen Trail 2.0
Frozen Trail 2.0 changed the Anvil Splitter’s status. It is no longer usable as an Anvil mod. Instead, it is an improved upgrade option for the Amplified Anvil. The update also removed the Anvil’s Tech Mod slot.
Spare Splitters have two newly stated uses: they can be sold, or they can be recycled into Amplified Fragments. Those fragments are used to repair amplified weapons. This is a version-specific relationship between an item and the amplification system, not evidence that all amplification branches are interchangeable with mods.
How the practical choice differs
Choose ordinary upgrading when you want predictability
- You already like the gun’s current firing pattern and role.
- You want a permanent improvement without changing how the weapon is handled.
- You are still building your Outpost and cannot yet use a fully upgraded Research Workstation.
- You need the next tier for near-term progression and do not want to commit to a specialization.
For example, a player who relies on a weapon’s existing rhythm in every raid can continue along the Gunsmith path and preserve that familiar behavior.
Choose amplification when a branch solves a specific problem
- You want a different firing behavior, such as the Burletta’s fully automatic example.
- You need a new engagement pattern, such as the scoped Renegade example.
- You are deliberately building around an ammunition or damage behavior, as illustrated by the incendiary Rattler with a 64-round magazine.
- You are willing to manage a specialized weapon rather than keep every gun in its baseline role.
Amplification is most valuable when you can name the role you want before selecting the branch. “Higher quality” alone is not a sufficient reason, because the meaningful decision is the behavior that the branch introduces.

A decision framework before you spend resources
Ask what must stay unchanged
Write down the characteristics that make the weapon useful to you: its firing pattern, sight picture, ammunition behavior and intended range. If changing one of those would undermine your loadout, stay with ordinary upgrading until you have a branch that clearly supports the same job.

Ask what the raid requires
Use ordinary tiers when the goal is a dependable improvement for a broad range of encounters. Consider amplification when a branch directly addresses a recurring limitation, such as needing a different rate of fire, a scoped option or a larger incendiary setup. The examples supplied by Embark show that the payoff can be functional rather than merely numerical.
Check the workstation and eligibility first
Amplification cannot be started from the Gunsmith alone. Confirm that the Outpost Research Workstation is fully upgraded and that the weapon appears in the eligible list. The launch announcement covered a range of guns rather than every weapon, so do not assume that a favorite gun is included.
Read the confirmation screen carefully
The official material does not establish a universal way to undo every branch. Before confirming, look for the current build’s wording about costs, replacement, reset or permanence. Treat an unconfirmed reset as unavailable rather than planning to switch branches casually.
Permanence, reversibility and resource planning
What is established
Ordinary upgrades are described as permanent improvements applied through the Gunsmith. The Anvil Splitter update also describes a concrete resource loop for amplified weapons: spare Splitters can become Amplified Fragments, which repair those weapons.

The official preview and Frozen Trail 2.0 notes do not state that every amplification choice can be reversed, nor do they provide one global rule for replacing a branch. That means you should not assume that an amplified weapon can be returned to its previous behavior or freely respecialized. Verify the wording shown for the specific weapon and branch in your current version.
Why the distinction affects your inventory
A standard upgrade asks whether the next tier is worth its material cost. An amplification choice asks an additional question: whether the resulting behavior is worth maintaining and repairing as a specialized weapon. The Splitter-to-Fragment conversion is the clearest published example of amplification having its own resource considerations.

Common misunderstandings and fixes
“Tier IV means amplified.”
Why it is wrong: Tier IV is the top of the ordinary numeral progression described for standard upgrades. Amplification is a separate fifth quality level.
Fix: Check the weapon’s quality or amplification status at the Research Workstation, not only the numeral in its name.

Fix: Follow the 2.0 behavior: sell spare Splitters or recycle them into Amplified Fragments for amplified-weapon repairs.
“I can always undo an amplification branch.”
Why it is unsafe: A universal reversal rule has not been established.
Fix: Read the branch’s current confirmation and management controls before committing.

Keeping a familiar sidearm
Suppose your loadout depends on the Burletta’s existing handling and you simply want a stronger version for routine encounters. The Gunsmith path matches that objective because it improves the established weapon without asking you to adopt a new firing behavior.
Building a close-range automatic sidearm
If your objective is specifically an automatic sidearm, the Burletta amplification example is the relevant type of choice. You are not merely adding a tier; you are selecting a branch that changes how the pistol fires. Confirm that the branch’s other requirements and resource implications fit your current build before committing.
Extending a weapon’s engagement range
A scoped Renegade illustrates a role change. A player who wants to keep the Renegade but use it at a different range would evaluate the amplification branch, whereas a player satisfied with the unscoped behavior would continue ordinary upgrading.
Designing around incendiary capacity
The Rattler example combines incendiary behavior with a 64-round magazine. That kind of branch is useful only when the larger ammunition setup and incendiary role match your encounter plan; it is not automatically superior to every other configuration.

The system described here is anchored to Frozen Trail 2.0, released October 8, 2026. Embark’s preview was published September 23, 2026, and introduced the fifth quality level, the fully upgraded Research Workstation requirement, the initial 15-weapon rollout and the Burletta, Renegade and Rattler examples. The 2.0 notes separately document the Anvil Splitter and Tech Mod slot changes.
Older explanations that describe the Splitter as an Anvil mod are outdated for this version. Likewise, a guide that treats the announced 15 weapons as a permanent roster may not reflect a later build. When an in-game label conflicts with an old explanation, use the current Outpost and weapon screens as the authority for eligibility, costs and branch-management controls.

- Identify whether you want a better version of the same weapon or a different behavior.
- For the same behavior, open the Gunsmith and inspect the next ordinary tier and its material cost.
