Wealthfront Cash is a brokerage cash-management account that sweeps available cash to participating banks; it is not itself a bank deposit account, and using it does not require investing in securities. Wealthfront advertised a 3.55% base APY on September 18, 2026, but the rate is variable. Whether the account suits you depends on more than that dated rate: bank-sweep insurance has conditions, and withdrawal timing and limits vary by method and eligibility.

What is the Wealthfront Cash Account?

Wealthfront Cash is designed to hold cash and provide banking-style features, including direct deposit, bill payment and debit-card access. Available cash is routed through a sweep program to participating banks. That structure lets customers earn interest without buying stocks, bonds or other securities in the account, but it does not make Wealthfront a bank.

Wealthfront Brokerage LLC’s product disclosure states: “Neither Wealthfront Brokerage nor any of its affiliates are a bank, and the Cash Account itself is not a deposit account.” The distinction matters when evaluating insurance, access and how the account compares with a savings account opened directly at a bank.

What APY does Wealthfront Cash pay?

Wealthfront advertised a 3.55% base APY on September 18, 2026. The rate is variable and may change; it is paid by participating banks, not guaranteed by Wealthfront for a fixed period. The sweep disclosure says interest accrues daily, compounds monthly and is credited monthly. It also cautions that the APY shown on the website may not exactly match the rate earned during every period.

Promotional boosts are not the base rate

The product page showed a new-client offer adding 0.65 percentage points to the APY for three months on balances up to $150,000. Other boosts depend on qualifying deposits or use of other products. These offers have eligibility and balance conditions, so do not treat a boosted rate as the standard ongoing yield. Check the applicable terms and current rate before opening an account.

How much FDIC insurance can the sweep provide?

Deposits placed at participating banks may be eligible for FDIC pass-through insurance when program requirements are met. The standard limit is $250,000 per depositor, per participating bank, per ownership category. That limit includes other deposits you hold at the same bank in the same ownership capacity, including accounts outside Wealthfront’s sweep.

Wealthfront’s product disclosure advertises maximum network eligibility of up to $8 million for an individual account and $16 million for a joint account. Those are conditional network maximums, not a guarantee that every customer’s entire balance is insured. The actual coverage depends on available participating banks, how funds are allocated, ownership category, and your other deposits at those banks. Wealthfront says bank allocations are not equal and that participating banks may be added or removed. Customers are responsible for tracking their balances and checking the current bank list.

FDIC coverage and SIPC protection are different

Where the cash is Potential protection Important qualification
At a participating bank through the sweep FDIC pass-through insurance may apply Subject to program conditions and the $250,000 limit per depositor, bank and ownership category; other deposits at that bank count.
At the brokerage or moving between institutions SIPC protection may apply within applicable limits SIPC does not protect against a loss in value, and deposits held at participating banks are not SIPC-protected.

These protections apply at different stages; they are not one continuous insurance guarantee over every dollar at every moment.

Can you use Wealthfront Cash like a checking account?

Wealthfront lists account and routing numbers, direct deposit, bill payment, mobile check deposit, ATM access, debit-card access and wires to eligible destinations. The debit card is optional. Some checking features require partner-bank eligibility and identity verification, so confirm your eligibility and feature access rather than assuming every service is available to every applicant.

How quickly can you withdraw money?

Wealthfront advertises free instant or same-day withdrawals to eligible accounts, but the destination institution and payment network affect availability. A newly deposited amount may be held for 2–4 days before it can be withdrawn. “Instant” therefore describes an available route under qualifying conditions, not a promise that every withdrawal arrives immediately.

Published transfer and card limits

  • ACH: The support article lists a $250,000 daily limit. RTP and FedNow transfers count toward that daily amount.
  • Account-and-routing-number withdrawals: The listed withdrawal limit is at least $50,000 per day. This is a separate stated limit; check the current terms for the transfer route you plan to use.
  • Debit-card spending: The debit-card page lists an overall daily spend limit of $10,000.
  • ATM withdrawals: The listed maximum is 10 withdrawals per day and $1,000 total per day.
  • Cash deposits: Limits apply, and a retailer may charge a fee. Check the current cash-deposit terms and the retailer’s charges before making a deposit.

Limits and payment availability can change. If you need to move a large balance by a particular deadline, check the current limit and destination eligibility first.

What fees should you check?

Wealthfront’s fee page says the Cash Account has no account fees. That does not mean every transaction is free: debit-card use, ATM operators, retailers and receiving financial institutions may impose charges. Wealthfront’s product page says it reimburses two domestic out-of-network ATM fees per month, up to $7.50 each. It also lists free wires to title or escrow companies and to accounts you own. Confirm the current terms and any fee charged by the other institution before initiating a transaction.

Who may find the account useful?

The account may suit someone who wants a variable-yield place for cash with direct-deposit and bill-pay features, and who is comfortable with a brokerage-operated sweep rather than a deposit account opened directly at a bank. It is less straightforward for someone who needs guaranteed immediate access to every new deposit, relies on a particular withdrawal route or already has substantial deposits at participating banks.

Wealthfront’s comparison table is company marketing, so its competitor rates and averages should be treated as dated company claims rather than an independently verified market comparison. Separately, Wealthfront Corporation reported in a 2026 SEC filing that cash-management products accounted for approximately 74% of total revenue in fiscal 2026. That company-reported figure is useful context about the business, but it does not establish the account’s quality or the benefit to an individual customer.
