Albertsons is undertaking a company-wide review after fiscal second-quarter net income fell roughly 70% year over year to about $51.5 million to just under $52 million. The grocer withdrew its fiscal-2026 outlook and says it will develop a broader turnaround plan by the fiscal fourth quarter ending in February 2027. The review could affect costs, pricing, operating structure, capital allocation, banners, markets and assets, but no specific store or banner sale has been announced.
What happened to Albertsons’ profits?
For the 12 weeks ended September 12, 2026, Albertsons Companies reported net income of about $51.5 million, according to CoStar, while Yahoo Finance reported just under $52 million. That compares with approximately $168.5 million to $169 million a year earlier, a decline of about 70%.
Revenue was far steadier than earnings. Net sales and other revenue dipped 0.1% to approximately $18.89 billion, according to CoStar. The contrast means Albertsons did not suffer a collapse in reported sales, but generated substantially less profit from that revenue.

The figures come from CoStar and Yahoo Finance reports published in 2026. Small differences in the profit figure reflect how those outlets rounded or presented the company’s result.
Why did earnings weaken?
Management said sales and earnings growth were below expectations and that market-share trends were lagging. External pressures described in the reporting include cautious consumer spending, persistent inflation and elevated fuel prices. Grocery shoppers are also comparing Albertsons with Walmart, discount chains, lower-priced private-label products and other formats that compete aggressively on value.

That creates a difficult operating trade-off: Albertsons needs to lower prices and improve stores to regain traffic, while funding those moves without allowing already-weaker margins to deteriorate further. The company has not attributed the entire profit decline to one product category or one geography in the public statements summarized by the cited reports.
What is Albertsons’ “comprehensive business review”?
After withdrawing fiscal-2026 guidance, Albertsons began a review intended to cut costs, support lower prices, reverse sluggish sales and produce a wider turnaround plan in the fiscal fourth quarter ending February 2027.

The areas under review
- Operating model and organizational structure
- Cost structure and opportunities to remove duplication
- Capital allocation, including where investment should be concentrated
- The portfolio of banners, markets, stores, assets and other businesses
- Pricing and the company’s ability to compete for value-conscious shoppers
Executive Chair Meg Whitman said, “We must turn things around.” She also said, “Everything should be on the table as we figure out how Albertsons should be structured to better compete in the years ahead.” Chief Executive Officer Susan Morris said, “We’re not satisfied with the results and the current trajectory of our business.” Those statements describe an open-ended process, not a completed breakup or a predetermined list of closures.
Is Albertsons going to sell stores or Safeway locations?
Possibly, but there is no announced sale list. Because the review explicitly includes banners, markets and assets, selling or exiting underperforming locations or businesses is among the options management could evaluate. Public statements and the cited 2026 reports do not identify a particular Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Jewel-Osco or other location for closure or sale.
Readers should therefore distinguish between a strategic option and a decision. A named-store closure would normally require a later company announcement, regulatory filing or local notice. Until one appears, claims that a specific location is shutting are unconfirmed.

What is changing under the ACI Edge program?
The review builds on an operating program already announced by Albertsons. ACI Edge is consolidating the company’s 11 divisions into four regions and centralizing center-store merchandising. “Center store” generally covers packaged grocery, household and other nonperishable categories, so the change is aimed at coordinating buying and merchandising rather than simply changing store formats.

That is a management target for cumulative savings over the stated period, not money already realized and not a promise that all savings will be returned to shoppers as price cuts.

Will Albertsons prices come down?
Lower prices are one of the stated goals of the review, so shoppers could see sharper promotions, more competitive shelf prices or a greater emphasis on private-label value if management decides those actions are financially sustainable. The company has not provided a timetable, product list or guaranteed percentage reduction.
Any price benefit will depend on execution: Albertsons must find enough savings to fund reductions while maintaining store labor, in-stock levels, fresh-food quality and digital fulfillment. The $2 billion three-year savings target may provide funding capacity, but it does not establish what an individual shopper will pay at a particular store.

What happened to the Kroger merger?
The proposed $24.6 billion merger between Albertsons and Kroger was blocked by a federal court on antitrust grounds in December 2024. Albertsons subsequently terminated the transaction. Reuters has reported that the failed deal remains part of the strategic backdrop and that Albertsons is pursuing damages from Kroger.

With the merger no longer available to deliver scale, Albertsons must improve performance as a standalone company. That helps explain why management is examining its own structure, costs and portfolio rather than presenting the current review as an integration plan. The litigation and its outcome also remain relevant to capital allocation and strategic choices, although the cited reports do not give a damages amount or a resolution date.
What happens next?
- Review work: Management evaluates operations, costs, pricing, capital priorities and the portfolio of banners and assets.
- Execution of ACI Edge: The 11-to-four regional consolidation and centralized center-store merchandising continue as part of the operating response.
- Turnaround plan: Albertsons expects to present a broader plan in the fiscal fourth quarter ending February 2027.
- Further disclosures: Any store closures, banner sales, market exits, major investment changes or revised financial targets would need to be identified in subsequent company communications.
Until those disclosures arrive, the certain facts are the profit decline, the withdrawn outlook, the announced review and the reorganization already attached to ACI Edge. The scope is broad, but its final shape remains undecided.
