Most Waze failures fall into five distinct groups: the phone cannot obtain a reliable location, the app cannot reach its routing service, the destination or selected route is wrong, spoken guidance is silent, or Waze works on the phone but not on Android Auto or CarPlay. Start by identifying which boundary is failing instead of reinstalling the app immediately.
Check the phone’s location switch and Waze permission first, then test the phone away from the car display. That single test separates a phone, GPS or network fault from an in-car integration problem. The procedures below follow Waze’s published troubleshooting guidance and note where Android, iOS, vehicle systems and map-data providers require different escalation paths.
Quick triage: match the symptom to the likely source

Park before changing permissions, network settings or vehicle controls. Do not diagnose the app while driving.
1. “No GPS” or an inaccurate location
Waze cannot navigate correctly until the phone supplies a location. A missing permission, a disabled Location setting, a weak receiver or an obstructed phone position can all look like an app failure.

Confirm Location and Waze permission
- Turn on the phone’s system Location service.
- Open the app-permission screen for Waze and allow location access. Android menu names differ by manufacturer and operating-system version; some Waze instructions apply only to Android 12 and later, so use the labels shown on your device rather than following an older screenshot literally.
- Return to Waze and wait for a position before starting navigation.
If permission is denied, changing a voice or route setting will not restore GPS. Check the system-level switch as well as the individual Waze permission; either one can block location.
Use Waze’s outdoor GPS test
Waze’s GPS troubleshooting guidance recommends a hard reboot of the phone and a test outside with a GPS-status application. An accuracy or error reading of 0 m or more than 35 m is treated by that guide as evidence that GPS is not working properly. An accuracy reading under 35 m is treated as working GPS. This is Waze’s operational troubleshooting threshold, not a guarantee that every position will be accurate to 35 m in every environment.
Take the test with a clear view of the sky. If the receiver still fails, contact the phone manufacturer, especially when another navigation app shows the same behavior. A phone-side GPS fault will affect more than Waze.
Separate a Waze-only fault from a phone fault
- Compare Waze with another GPS application in the same outdoor location.
- If every GPS app loses position, continue with the phone maker’s support path rather than repeatedly reinstalling Waze.
- If only Waze fails, restart it. If the problem remains limited to Waze, reinstalling the app is a reasonable next step after permissions have been checked.
Waze’s community guidance also warns that the device needs an unobstructed view of the sky. A phone buried in a console, behind dense vehicle structure or placed where the receiver is shielded can produce a poor fix. A mount that positions the phone with a clearer view may help placement, but it cannot repair a disabled permission or a failing GPS receiver.
When to escalate a location problem
Escalate to the phone manufacturer when the outdoor test fails across apps or reports 0 m or over 35 m. Contact Waze Help when the phone’s GPS works elsewhere but Waze continues to show “No GPS” after a restart, permission check and (if necessary) reinstall. Keep the phone disconnected from the car display during this comparison so an integration problem does not obscure the result.

2. “No route,” “Routing server” or connection errors
Route calculation requires both a usable GPS position and a network connection. Waze says route errors can appear when the device is offline, when coverage is weak, or after the phone changes from Wi-Fi to mobile data.
Restore a clean connection
- Check that the phone is online and has a strong mobile-data or Wi-Fi signal. A connection icon alone does not prove that data is passing reliably.
- If the error appeared while leaving Wi-Fi, wait for mobile data to become active, then close and reopen Waze.
- Verify GPS using the location checks in the previous section. A network connection cannot substitute for a usable position.
- Request the route again from the destination screen.
Closing and reopening Waze is useful after a network transition because the app may still be holding the failed connection state. If other apps also struggle to load, solve the phone’s connectivity problem first.

Review route preferences, particularly avoid toll roads. Waze’s community FAQ notes that avoiding tolls can contribute to a routing-server error in an area where the only routes known to the server include toll roads. This is community guidance, not a universal explanation for every server message, so treat it as a targeted test: temporarily relax the restriction, request the route again, and restore the preference afterward if needed.
Other route settings can change the available path without indicating a server outage. Make sure the selected fastest-or-shortest preference matches what you intend, and check that the destination is not an inaccessible road, private entrance or disconnected segment.
What the error means after these checks
- If Waze works after reconnecting the phone or reopening the app, the likely trigger was a temporary connection or Wi-Fi-to-mobile transition.
- If the phone has strong data but every route request fails, test another destination and confirm GPS. A single malformed or unreachable destination is different from a service-wide failure.
- If multiple destinations fail while other apps have data, send the symptom to Waze Help with the phone platform, approximate location and the exact message.
Do not assume that deleting and reinstalling Waze will fix a weak signal or a routing constraint. Those conditions exist outside the app package.

3. The destination pin is wrong or the chosen route looks wrong
“Wrong destination” and “wrong route” are separate problems. First verify the pin. Only then evaluate why Waze selected a particular road.

When the destination itself is misplaced
Waze’s community FAQ explains that address and place coordinates can come from third-party content providers. The provider varies by country; for address lookups in the United States and Canada, the FAQ identifies Google. A business result, street address or entrance can therefore have a source outside Waze’s own map editing.
- Open the destination details and inspect the pin on the map rather than relying only on the displayed street name.
- Compare the pin with the intended entrance, building or road.
- Identify the source shown for the address or place result, when the interface provides it.
- Submit a correction to that provider when the source data is wrong. Use Waze’s reporting tools as well when the map itself needs correction.
Moving the route manually does not correct a bad source coordinate for the next driver. Correct the underlying listing or address when possible.
When the pin is correct but the route is surprising
Route choices depend on the connections in Waze’s map, available speed and traffic data, and your fastest-or-shortest preference. A route that looks longer on the map may be selected because current or historical speed information makes it faster; a missing connection or incorrect turn restriction can produce the opposite result.
- Confirm that the destination pin is on the intended side of the road and that the final approach is legal and accessible.
- Review route preferences before starting, including the fastest-or-shortest choice and toll avoidance.
- Compare the alternatives Waze displays, if any, rather than assuming the first line is the only calculation.
- Report a persistent map or routing error with the location and turn involved.
Repeatedly driving a preferred road does not, by itself, teach Waze to select it. A persistent mismatch should be treated as a map, traffic-data or settings issue and reported through the appropriate channel.

Why a route can change between two requests
Traffic and speed data can change, and the map network may contain different connections than the ones you expect from a paper map. A changed route is not proof that the destination moved. Recheck the pin first, then compare the route settings and the roads Waze is using.

Audio failures usually come from two independent controls: Waze’s sound mode and its guidance volume. Microphone permission is a separate function used for voice search or voice reporting; granting microphone access does not turn navigation speech on.
Check sound mode and guidance volume
- Open Waze’s sound controls and select the mode you need: sound on, alerts only, or sound off.
- Raise Waze’s guidance volume while a route is active or from the sound settings. This is separate from the phone’s general ringtone level.
- If Waze is shown on a vehicle display, check whether the platform exposes the sound control on the phone, in the in-car Waze interface, or both. The exact controls vary by platform and vehicle.
Test with a short route while parked. If alerts are audible but spoken turns are not, the selected sound mode or voice data is a more likely cause than GPS.
Reset the downloaded voice data
Waze’s published sound guidance documents a voice-cache reset for both iOS and Android. In Waze, enter ##@cctts in the search field, submit it, and then select the desired voice again. The command clears the voice cache so Waze can rebuild the speech data.

Because app interfaces change, confirm that the current version still presents the same search behavior before relying on the command. If the voice list or controls look different, use the sound-help path in the app and reselect a voice there.

Keep playback and voice input separate
Voice search needs microphone access; spoken navigation needs the sound mode, guidance volume and a functioning playback path. Changing microphone permission is therefore not a substitute for checking the speaker or car-audio controls. If Waze speaks on the phone but not through the vehicle, continue with the Android Auto or CarPlay isolation test below.
5. Waze fails only on Android Auto or CarPlay
Start by disconnecting the phone from the vehicle system and opening Waze directly on the handset. This is the quickest way to distinguish a phone-side problem from a car-display or head-unit problem.
Android Auto
Waze Help states: “Waze on Android Auto depends on your phone’s GPS and internet connection.” If Waze shows the same GPS or route error on the phone after you disconnect it, follow the phone GPS, permission and network procedures above. Android Auto cannot provide a replacement GPS or network path for a phone that is already failing.

If Waze works normally on the phone but the vehicle screen reports a GPS error or fails to show navigation, the fault is at the integration boundary. Escalate through Waze support and, where appropriate, the vehicle or head-unit support path. Record whether the phone was online, whether another phone behaves the same way, and whether the problem affects only Waze.
CarPlay
Use the same phone-first test with CarPlay. Waze’s guidance distinguishes factory-installed head units from separately installed CarPlay systems, so the responsible support channel can differ. A Waze failure that follows the phone away from the car belongs in the phone or Waze troubleshooting path; a failure that appears only when CarPlay is connected points toward the car system, the CarPlay connection or Waze’s integration.
What to record before contacting support
- Phone model and operating-system version.
- Whether Waze works when disconnected from the car.
- Android Auto or CarPlay, and whether the head unit is factory-installed or separately installed.
- The exact on-screen error, whether the phone had GPS and internet, and whether sound worked on the handset.
These details prevent support from sending you through the full GPS procedure when the phone has already passed it.
When to contact Waze, the phone maker or the vehicle-support team

Include the exact error and the isolation test you completed. “Waze is broken” is less actionable than “Waze works on the phone with GPS and data, but Android Auto alone shows a GPS error.”
A practical pre-drive checklist
- Location is enabled and Waze has the required permission.
- The phone has a usable data connection before route calculation.
- The phone is positioned with as clear a view of the sky as practical.
- The destination pin and final entrance are correct.
- Sound mode is on or alerts-only as intended, and guidance volume is audible.
- After connecting Android Auto or CarPlay, the same route still works on the phone if the car display behaves unexpectedly.
This order matters: permissions and GPS come before route calculation, route and pin checks come before judging a detour, and phone-side testing comes before blaming the vehicle integration.
