When Waze sends you toward an unwanted toll road, freeway, ferry, or HOV lane, check the setting that matches the problem instead of turning everything off. I use these controls to make routes fit my preferences, but they cannot guarantee a particular road or a better route: Waze may include a road type you asked to avoid when no suitable alternative is available.
Where to find Waze’s route-avoidance settings
Open Settings > Navigation in Waze and enable only the relevant avoidance option: Avoid toll roads, Avoid ferries, or Avoid freeways. In some locales, freeways may be labeled motorways. Waze says changes apply to future drives, so check the route preview again after changing a preference. Waze’s route-avoidance instructions also cover Android Auto and CarPlay, where controls and labels can differ by platform. For CarPlay, some settings need to be changed on the phone or through the route interface.
Choose the option that addresses your actual constraint. For example, if you are trying to avoid tolls, turn on Avoid toll roads; there is no need to also avoid ferries or freeways unless you want to. Compare the offered routes for their road types, displayed ETAs, and any toll estimate. Those choices are specific to the trip and the routes available at that time, not a universal ranking of which route is best.

Why Waze may still use a road you asked it to avoid
Avoidance preferences are not an absolute ban. Waze says it may still suggest toll roads, ferries, or freeways when the routes available at the time leave no alternative. If the route preview shows a road type you excluded, review the other offered routes and your constraints; the preference may not be satisfiable for that trip.

If Waze does choose a toll route, it may show an estimated charge. Treat that figure as a guide, not the toll operator’s authoritative price: Waze says estimates are based on community-provided information, the route, and settings. Check the operator’s current price when the exact cost matters. Waze explains how toll estimates work.
Check vehicle type and passes if Waze routes you into an HOV or express lane
If the unexpected route uses an HOV or express lane, look at your vehicle type and saved toll or HOV passes. Waze says the vehicle type defaults to Private; a Taxi or Electric car setting, or a pass on the account, can affect this kind of routing. Make sure the vehicle type reflects your vehicle, remove expired passes, and check that any listed pass is one you actually have. If your goal is to avoid toll roads, enable that preference as well. Test personalized routing if alternate routes seem inexplicable
Waze’s personalized navigation can use routes you have chosen and routes you have not chosen to suggest route preferences. It may, for example, favor familiar main roads or a particular highway entrance. The feature is enabled by default, but its availability depends on your area and whether Waze has enough navigation history. That makes it a setting worth testing if routes repeatedly seem tailored to past choices, not proof that personalization caused any one unexpected route.
To switch it off, go to Settings > Navigation > Personalization > Personalized navigation and turn off Get personalized routes. Waze describes the feature and its availability in its personalized navigation help page.

Check for a connected service during a rideshare trip
If a route preference appears to change while you are on a ride, check whether Waze is being used through a connected third-party service. Waze says a connected service may temporarily override Avoid toll roads, Avoid ferries, Avoid motorways, or Allow dirt roads during the ride. A notification may appear, and the settings return to normal afterward. The behavior is described in Waze’s connected-services help.
Route preferences and privacy are separate choices
Changing route preferences does not itself change Waze’s privacy settings. Waze lets users adjust map visibility, ad personalization, navigation history, recent locations, and account controls. Invisible mode prevents your account from appearing on the map to other people; it does not mean Waze stops collecting location and route information for purposes described in its privacy policy. Device-level location permission is a separate control in your phone’s settings. Read Waze’s privacy policy before deciding which privacy controls suit you.

What route settings can—and cannot—control
Waze describes its navigation as community-based, using real-time information from drivers to calculate average speeds, identify errors, improve road layouts, and learn road and turn directions. It is designed for private cars, motorcycles, and taxis; Waze says it does not currently support navigation in lanes dedicated to public transportation, bicycles, or trucks. These limits help explain why a route preference is only one input into the routes available for a particular drive. Waze describes how its navigation works.
