Choose theHunter: Call of the Wild if your group has three to eight people. Its publisher and console listings support online multiplayer for up to eight players. Choose Way of the Hunter when exactly two people want to play together; the Xbox listing specifies online co-op for two players.
Way of the Hunter does not support cross-platform multiplayer, according to its official Q&A. Call of the Wild uses peer-to-peer sessions, and the official pages cited here do not establish cross-play for every platform combination, so check your exact consoles or PC storefronts before buying. On Xbox, console multiplayer requires an eligible Game Pass plan; on PlayStation, PS Plus is required for online play.
At a glance: which game fits your group?
| Question | Way of the Hunter | theHunter: Call of the Wild |
|---|---|---|
| Largest confirmed party | Two players on the Xbox listing (2–2 online co-op) | Up to eight online players |
| Three or four friends | Does not fit the two-player Xbox limit | Supported by the advertised eight-player online mode |
| Cross-platform play | Official Q&A says cross-platform multiplayer is not offered | Not established by the official pages cited here; verify the exact platform pairing |
| Connection architecture | Patch notes document ongoing multiplayer fixes, including crashes, visibility and connection problems | Peer-to-peer sessions; host and guest NAT settings can affect joining |
| Paid reserve access | No party-wide DLC ownership rule is established in the cited material | A party can use a paid DLC reserve when at least one member owns it, according to the publisher |
| Console online-service requirement | Use the requirement shown for your console store and edition | Xbox listing names Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate; PlayStation listing requires PS Plus |
The practical split is simple: Call of the Wild is the safer choice for a larger friend group, while Way of the Hunter is designed around a two-person session. The remaining decision points are whether everyone can play on a compatible platform, how much connection troubleshooting your group tolerates, and which paid reserves or subscriptions you need.

Party size and the kind of session each game supports
Way of the Hunter: a two-person co-op choice
The official Xbox store listing identifies Way of the Hunter as online co-op for 2–2 players. That is a hard planning limit for an Xbox group: one player hosts or joins with one other player, and a third friend cannot enter the same online co-op session under that listing. The PlayStation page also advertises co-op with friends, but the cited page does not state a larger player cap. If your group is on PlayStation, confirm the current listing for your edition before assuming that its limit differs from Xbox.

This format suits partners, siblings or one hunting companion who want to move through the same reserve together. It does not suit a regular group that expects to rotate four or more players through a single lobby. Buying the game for a larger party and discovering the two-player ceiling is the most expensive avoidable mistake in this comparison.
theHunter: Call of the Wild: room for a full friend group
The publisher describes Call of the Wild as online multiplayer for up to eight players, and the Xbox and PlayStation listings support the same 2–8-player range. That gives a three- or four-person group room to play together while leaving space for additional friends. The eight-player figure is an online-session maximum, not a promise that every platform, storefront or future update will behave identically; use the listing for the platform on which you intend to play.
Call of the Wild is therefore the better fit for a standing group chat, a family that wants several people in one reserve, or a weekend session in which attendance changes. A two-person group can still play it, but its larger capacity is the feature that separates it from Way of the Hunter for social play.
Cross-platform play: what you can and cannot assume
Way of the Hunter has an explicit no-cross-platform statement
Way of the Hunter’s official Q&A says that the game does not offer cross-platform multiplayer. Treat that as a compatibility requirement: players should plan to use the same supported platform ecosystem rather than expecting an Xbox player to join a PlayStation or PC friend. The statement is about multiplayer between platforms, not about whether a single platform supports local or online co-op.

Before purchasing, write down each player’s exact device and storefront. Two people who both own the game but are separated across console families will not be rescued by a setting or an in-game invitation if cross-platform play is unavailable.
Call of the Wild requires a platform-specific check
The official pages used for this comparison confirm the player count but do not establish a universal cross-play policy for Call of the Wild. Do not promise that an Xbox, PlayStation and PC group can share one session simply because all three versions advertise online multiplayer. Check the current multiplayer and cross-play information for the precise platform combination your group uses.
Xbox Cloud Gaming support appears on the Xbox listing. Cloud availability is a way to run the game through a supported Xbox service; it is not, by itself, evidence that cloud players can join every console or PC version. Confirm both the service catalog and the multiplayer pairing rules before making cloud play the plan for a mixed-device group.
Connection reliability and hosting
Call of the Wild uses peer-to-peer multiplayer
Expansive Worlds’ customer-support article, updated August 12, 2024, states that the company does not maintain multiplayer servers for Call of the Wild and that multiplayer instances are peer-to-peer connections. In practice, one player’s connection acts as the session’s host connection while the others join it. This model can work well for a small group, but the host’s router, NAT type and upload stability matter to everyone in the session.

A strict or incompatible NAT configuration can prevent a player from joining or hosting. If invitations fail, the problem may be network configuration rather than game ownership or the number of players. Start troubleshooting with the person attempting to host, then test another host if the platform allows it. A different host can produce a different result because the peer-to-peer path changes.
Way of the Hunter has documented multiplayer maintenance
Way of the Hunter patch notes show ongoing multiplayer maintenance, including fixes for crashes, server visibility and connection problems. Those notes demonstrate that the developers have addressed multiplayer faults over time, but they are not a guarantee of current performance on every platform, network or software version. Keep the game updated and read the current platform-specific patch notes when a newly installed version behaves differently from an older one.
For either game, a stable wired connection or strong Wi-Fi, current system software and a fully updated game reduce avoidable failures. Avoid changing several router settings at once: test the simplest change, retry the session, and record which player can host successfully.
DLC and reserve ownership
Call of the Wild lets a group use a paid reserve when one member owns it
The publisher says that a party can access a paid DLC reserve when at least one member owns that reserve. Your group therefore does not necessarily need to purchase the same reserve four or eight times to hunt there together. Confirm that the owner is in the party and that the intended reserve is installed and available on the host’s platform before inviting everyone.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
This rule concerns access to the reserve during multiplayer. It should not be read as a blanket statement that every cosmetic item, weapon pack or other add-on is shared. Check the individual DLC description if your group is buying something other than a reserve.
Do not assume the same arrangement for Way of the Hunter
The cited Way of the Hunter material does not establish a party-wide DLC ownership rule. Treat each player’s add-on access as a separate question and check the current store description for the exact expansion you want. If the reserve or expansion is essential to your plan, settle ownership before the first session rather than discovering a restriction after everyone has joined.
Recurring online-service requirements and costs
Xbox console
The Xbox Call of the Wild listing says that console multiplayer requires one of the eligible Game Pass plans: Essential, Premium or Ultimate. The plan names and terms can change, so verify the current requirement and price in your region at checkout. The subscription requirement is separate from owning the game; a player can own the title and still be unable to use console online multiplayer without the eligible plan.
PlayStation console
The PlayStation Call of the Wild page states that PS Plus is required for online play. Check the current PS Plus tier, regional price and account status for every participant. A lapsed subscription can look like a game or invitation failure even when the installation is correct.

- Confirm the pair. Limit the planned session to two players if either person is using the Xbox version, whose listing specifies 2–2 online co-op.
- Match platforms. Because the official Q&A rules out cross-platform multiplayer, put both players on a compatible platform ecosystem before buying or downloading.
- Update both installations. Install the same current game update and restart the game after an update completes.
- Check online eligibility. On a console, verify the platform’s current online-multiplayer subscription requirement and that both accounts can play online.
- Create or join the co-op session. Use the game’s online co-op option, then send the platform invitation to the other player. If the invitation is not visible, confirm that both players are online and appearing available to friends.
- Test before committing to a long hunt. Enter the reserve, move around briefly and confirm that both players remain visible. If the session crashes or disappears, retry after both players restart the game and then consult the latest patch notes.
How to organize a Call of the Wild session for three to eight players
- Count the final group. The advertised limit is up to eight online players. If more than eight people want to participate, split into separate sessions rather than trying to exceed the limit.
- Choose a host with a dependable connection. Because sessions are peer-to-peer, begin with the player whose router and NAT status are most reliable. This is a practical hosting choice, not a separate server option.
- Verify platform pairing. The cited official pages do not establish universal cross-play. Confirm that every participant’s exact platform combination can join the same session.
- Check console subscriptions. Xbox console players need an eligible Game Pass plan named by the listing; PlayStation players need PS Plus. Resolve expired subscriptions before sending invitations.
- Decide whether to use a paid reserve. If the group wants a DLC reserve, have at least one participant own it, following the publisher’s stated multiplayer access rule. Make that owner part of the session.
- Start with a small join test. Invite one friend first. If that player joins successfully, invite the rest in batches. This makes it easier to identify whether a specific account, platform pairing or network is blocking entry.
- Change hosts methodically if needed. If several players cannot join, end the session and have another participant host. Since the game is peer-to-peer, a different host can avoid a NAT conflict without changing the game or DLC.
Troubleshooting common friend-play failures
A third friend cannot join Way of the Hunter
On Xbox, this is expected once the two-player limit is reached. Remove the extra player from the plan rather than looking for a hidden larger lobby. If the group is on PlayStation, check that edition’s current listing because the cited PlayStation page confirms co-op but does not state a higher cap.
An Xbox player cannot join a PlayStation Way of the Hunter player
The official Q&A says cross-platform multiplayer is not offered. Use matching platforms or choose a different game that explicitly supports your group’s platform combination. Reinstalling the game or changing NAT settings cannot add a cross-platform feature that the game does not provide.
Recommended Free Tools
Call of the Wild says the session cannot be joined
- Confirm the host has not already reached eight players.
- Check that every player’s platform combination is supported; cross-play is not established by the pages cited here.
- Verify the host and guests have the required Xbox or PlayStation online subscription.
- Ask another player to host, because peer-to-peer sessions depend on the host’s NAT and router path.
- Restart the game and router only after recording the exact error, then test one invite before rebuilding the full group.
Friends cannot enter a DLC reserve
For Call of the Wild, make sure the participant who owns the paid reserve is in the party and that the add-on is installed for that platform. The publisher’s rule permits party access when at least one member owns the reserve; it does not mean every add-on is automatically shared. For Way of the Hunter, check the specific expansion’s current ownership terms because no equivalent rule is established in the cited material.
A buying checklist for your group
- Number of players: two points toward Way of the Hunter; three to eight points toward Call of the Wild.
- Platform mix: Way of the Hunter requires matching platforms because its official Q&A rejects cross-platform multiplayer. For Call of the Wild, verify the exact combination rather than assuming cross-play.
- Network tolerance: Call of the Wild’s peer-to-peer model makes the host’s NAT and router important. Way of the Hunter’s patch history shows multiplayer fixes but no universal performance guarantee.
- DLC plan: One Call of the Wild player can provide access to a paid reserve for the party. Check each Way of the Hunter add-on separately.
- Recurring service: Budget the eligible Xbox Game Pass plan or PlayStation Plus where required, and confirm the current regional terms.
- Edition check: Read the current store page for the exact console, PC storefront or cloud option each person will use; player caps, cross-play policies and subscription labels can be edition- or platform-specific.
Which game should your group choose?
For a pair that will stay on compatible platforms, Way of the Hunter is the focused co-op option. Its two-player limit is clear on Xbox, and its official Q&A removes cross-platform play from the list of possibilities, so the purchase makes sense only when both players’ devices already match.
For a social group of three, four or more, theHunter: Call of the Wild is the practical choice because its online mode is advertised for up to eight players. Plan around peer-to-peer hosting, verify the platform combination, and have the required console subscriptions ready. If the group wants a paid reserve, designate one owner to host or join with that reserve available under the publisher’s party-access rule.
