Wawa’s expansion story has moved beyond the familiar “six current states plus eight coming soon” description. The eight states connected with its recent expansion wave are Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, and West Virginia—but several of them already have operating stores.
Tennessee became the final new-state entry in this group when Wawa opened its first Tennessee store in June 2026. Wawa now operates in 14 states plus Washington, D.C., rather than only the six states often cited in older articles.

| State | What is known |
|---|---|
| Alabama | First stores are already open. No verified statewide target or current opening schedule was available in the cited authoritative reporting. |
| Georgia | 26 stores planned in southern and coastal Georgia over five to eight years. |
| Indiana | First stores are already open. No current statewide target or opening calendar was confirmed in the available sources. |
| Kentucky | Entered in July 2025; eight stores were open statewide by June 10, 2026, with a plan for more than 40 eventually. |
| North Carolina | 90-store plan over three to five years. |
| Ohio | Approximately 60 stores planned over eight to 10 years. |
| Tennessee | Up to 50 stores planned over 10 years, with six scheduled to open in 2026 under Wawa’s official plan. |
| West Virginia | First stores are already open. No verified statewide target or current opening schedule was available in the cited authoritative reporting. |
These states should not all be described as places where Wawa is still “coming soon.” Alabama, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, and West Virginia had already reached the store-opening stage before Tennessee became the last new-state entry in this expansion group.

Georgia: 26 stores planned for the southern and coastal region
Georgia has one of the clearest published expansion targets. Wawa announced plans for 26 stores over five to eight years, with an expected pace of roughly three to four openings per year.
The company identified sites under contract in:
- Brunswick
- Jesup
- Hinesville
- Pooler
- Waycross
- Bainbridge
- Tifton
- Valdosta
- Albany
Wawa’s original announcement projected the first Georgia stores for late 2024. That date was a historical forecast from the company’s March 2024 release, not a current “coming soon” schedule. The reliable takeaway is the broader 26-store plan and the locations identified under contract at the time.

Kentucky: more than 40 stores planned
Wawa entered Kentucky in July 2025. By June 10, 2026, the company had opened eight stores statewide and said it expected to build four to eight stores per year for five to eight years. That pace would produce more than 40 stores.
Bowling Green was one of the next important milestones. The first Bowling Green Wawa, at 800 Gunnison Trail Way, was scheduled to open on July 9, 2026. A second location at 645 Hennessy Way was expected to open before the end of 2026.
This makes Kentucky a useful example of why the old “coming soon” wording is incomplete: Wawa is not merely announcing a possible entry there; it is already operating stores and continuing a multi-year rollout.
North Carolina: the largest announced state target
Wawa announced a plan for 90 North Carolina stores over three to five years. That is the largest specific state target in the expansion information covered here.

A Morehead City project at 5022 Hwy. 70 had site preparation underway in December 2025. Construction was projected for mid-2026, with completion expected in late 2026 or early 2027. A municipal notice said 17 locations were already serving customers statewide at that time.

Store counts can change as locations open, and the cited notice did not establish a newer statewide number.

Ohio: approximately 60 stores over eight to 10 years
Wawa announced plans for approximately 60 Ohio stores over eight to 10 years. The company’s September 2023 rollout projection called for up to 10 stores in 2025, another 10 in 2026, and five per year afterward.
Those annual figures were projections published in 2023, not guaranteed current opening numbers. At the time of the announcement, Wawa had more than 16 sites under contract across Butler, Clermont, Clinton, Greene, Hamilton, Miami, Montgomery, and Warren counties.
Readers checking an individual Ohio city should therefore look for a current Wawa announcement, planning filing, or local construction update rather than relying on the original “first stores by mid-2025” language.

Tennessee: the last new-state entry in this group
Wawa’s official Tennessee plan called for six new stores in 2026 and up to 50 stores over the following 10 years. The first two construction sites announced by the company were:

- 5109 Veterans Parkway, Murfreesboro
- 1290 Parkway Place, Clarksville
Both were projected in Wawa’s post-event release to open during the second half of 2026. Separate local reporting describes the Clarksville location as the first of seven Tennessee locations. Because the official plan and the local report use different counts, those figures should not be silently combined. The safest description is that Wawa planned six 2026 openings under its official announcement, while local reporting referred to seven locations in the Tennessee rollout.
Clarksville became Tennessee’s first Wawa location in June 2026, making Tennessee the final state among these eight to reach the initial store-opening stage.
Alabama, Indiana, and West Virginia
Wawa’s first stores in Alabama, Indiana, and West Virginia are already open. These states are part of the current multistate expansion, but the available authoritative sources do not provide a verified statewide store-count target or current opening calendar for each one.
That distinction matters. It is better to say that Wawa has entered these markets and that additional growth may follow than to invent a store count or repeat an old projection as if it were a live schedule.
What about Florida and Virginia?
Florida is not one of the eight new states. Wawa was already operating in Florida before this expansion wave began. Including Florida in the eight-state list confuses an existing market with a new-state entry.
Virginia is also an existing Wawa state. The company has a separate westward Virginia program focused on the I-81 region. That plan called for six to eight stores in 2025 and up to 60 stores over 10 years. Wawa identified groundbreaking sites in Lynchburg and Staunton, with both projected to open in fall 2025.

Virginia’s separate plan helps explain why different articles may cite more than eight expansion areas. The eight-state list refers to the newer states in the specific expansion wave, while Virginia represents additional growth within a state where Wawa already operated.

The commonly repeated claim that Wawa “currently operates in six states and is expanding into eight more” describes an earlier point in the rollout. It is no longer an accurate summary of the company’s footprint.
A more precise way to describe the situation is:
- The expansion wave is associated with Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, and West Virginia.
- Stores had already opened in seven of those states before Tennessee’s first location opened.
- Wawa operates in 14 states plus Washington, D.C.
- Individual store counts and opening dates vary by state and should be checked against newer local or company announcements.
The same caution applies to dates. Georgia’s late-2024 first-store projection and Ohio’s mid-2025 first-store projection came from older releases. They should be treated as historical targets, not as current guarantees.
How to check whether a Wawa is actually coming to your area
- Start with Wawa’s official announcements. Company releases are the best source for state plans, groundbreaking events, and named locations.
- Check the city or county planning department. Site plans, zoning documents, building permits, and road-improvement notices often reveal whether a project has moved beyond a general announcement.
- Look for a specific address. A named intersection or street address is stronger evidence than a social-media post or an unsourced list of “future locations.”
- Separate a planned site from an opening date. A site under contract may still face permitting, construction, or scheduling changes.
- Verify the date of the report. Wawa’s expansion targets run for several years, so a 2023 or 2024 projection may no longer describe the current timetable.

How many Wawa stores are planned for North Carolina?
Wawa announced a plan for 90 stores over three to five years. A December 2025 municipal notice said 17 locations were already serving customers at that time, but that should not be treated as the current 2026 total without a newer count.
How many Wawa stores are planned for Ohio?
Wawa announced approximately 60 Ohio stores over eight to 10 years. Earlier annual opening figures were projections from 2023, not current guarantees.
Is Florida one of the eight new Wawa states?
No. Florida was already an operating Wawa state before this expansion program.
How many Wawa stores are planned for Tennessee?
Wawa’s official plan called for six new Tennessee stores in 2026 and up to 50 stores over 10 years. Local reporting referred to seven Tennessee locations, so the two figures should be attributed separately.
The Bottom Line
Wawa’s eight-state expansion list is Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, and West Virginia. The wording “coming soon” is now outdated for most of them because Wawa has already opened stores in those markets. The largest announced targets are 90 stores in North Carolina, approximately 60 in Ohio, up to 50 in Tennessee, more than 40 in Kentucky, and 26 in Georgia. For a specific city, rely on the latest company release and local permit records rather than an old nationwide list.
