You can build a usable clock around the Waveshare ESP32-C6-Touch-AMOLED-2.16 without adding a separate display or real-time clock: both are already on the board. The key choices are whether to use Arduino IDE or ESP-IDF, whether to buy the battery-included board, and how your firmware will set and correct the time.
What the board already provides
The Waveshare ESP32-C6-Touch-AMOLED-2.16 is a development board built around an ESP32-C6. Its onboard hardware includes a 2.16-inch capacitive AMOLED display, a PCF85063 real-time clock (RTC), a six-axis IMU, audio circuitry, and power management. For a clock, the display and RTC are the central parts: the RTC keeps local time, while your program presents it on screen.
Waveshare lists the display at 480 × 480 pixels, 16.7 million colors, 600 cd/㎡ brightness, and a 100000:1 contrast ratio. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. The display uses a CO5300 driver and QSPI connection; touch uses a CST9220 controller over I2C. Use those model-specific details when selecting or adapting display and touch code. See the Waveshare board documentation.

Battery-included or battery-free
Waveshare identifies the battery-included version as SKU 34202 and the version without a lithium battery as SKU 34201. Both have a USB Type-C port for programming and logs, plus a 3.7 V battery header. Check the exact SKU and listing details before buying; a battery-free board does not include the lithium battery. The reviewed documentation does not establish that extra hardware is required for a basic clock.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Arduino IDE or ESP-IDF
Waveshare documents both Arduino IDE and ESP-IDF as supported development choices. Arduino IDE is a practical starting point for a hobbyist who wants a familiar workflow and examples. ESP-IDF is the alternative when you want its development tooling and finer control. The manufacturer does not establish a clock-specific advantage or performance difference between the frameworks.
Start with the board tutorial, then consult the Waveshare examples repository for board-specific libraries and example code. The repository lists Arduino libraries, examples, and firmware folders; its initial example release is dated 2026-03-30. Confirm that a sample targets this exact 2.16-inch board rather than a different Waveshare display model.

Plan how the clock gets the right time
The onboard PCF85063 RTC is the board’s local timekeeping component, and backup power is handled through the AXP2101 power-management chip. Your clock firmware still needs a way to set the RTC initially and, if desired, correct it later. Network time synchronization is one possible design choice, but the board materials cited here do not establish a specific NTP implementation, library, timezone setup, or accuracy figure. Treat those as firmware decisions to verify for your chosen framework rather than built-in guarantees.

- Identify the exact board. Confirm the ESP32-C6-Touch-AMOLED-2.16 model and note whether you have SKU 34202 with a battery or SKU 34201 without one.
- Set up the development environment. Choose Arduino IDE or ESP-IDF, then follow Waveshare’s board-specific instructions and examples repository.
- Bring up the display. Use code appropriate for the 480 × 480 AMOLED and its CO5300 driver. Add touch interaction only if you want controls such as changing settings on the screen.
- Read and display time. Integrate the PCF85063 RTC, render the time on the display, and decide how users will set it and whether your design will synchronize it over a network.
- Test the complete setup. Check that the display updates as expected and that time remains available under the power conditions you intend to use. The documentation does not specify clock accuracy or guarantee a particular backup duration.
A related clock project is inspiration, not proof of compatibility
Waveshare’s community showcase links Volos Projects’ I Didn’t Need Another ESP32 Clock… But I Made One Anyway. Its meterClock repository includes clock firmware and a Clock folder. That makes it a possible source of ideas, but the available project information does not establish compatibility with the ESP32-C6-Touch-AMOLED-2.16. Treat its code as a reference to inspect and adapt, not as a confirmed drop-in build.
