Wave 2 Wi-Fi is a common label for a later set of capabilities within 802.11ac, also known as Wi-Fi 5. It is associated with features such as downlink MU-MIMO and support for 160 MHz channels, but the label alone does not confirm which features a particular router or access point includes—or promise a particular internet speed.

What does “Wave 2” mean?

Wi-Fi Alliance launched its initial Wi-Fi CERTIFIED ac program in 2013. On June 28, 2016, the Alliance announced an expanded certification program that included Wave 2 features. Qualcomm’s contemporaneous account describes the expanded capabilities as part of 802.11ac, not as a new Wi-Fi generation. The family is also called Wi-Fi 5. Qualcomm’s account of the announcement and Intel’s Wi-Fi terminology reference distinguish the Wave 2 label from the underlying generation.

“Wave 1” and “Wave 2” are best understood as phases of 802.11ac product and certification capabilities. They are useful shorthand, but not a guarantee that every product carrying the label supports every feature commonly associated with Wave 2.

Which features are commonly associated with Wave 2?

Qualcomm’s description of Wave 2 lists downlink MU-MIMO, 160 MHz channels, four spatial streams, and extended support for 5 GHz channels. Intel identifies 80 MHz channel support with Wave 1 and 160 MHz support with Wave 2. These are commonly associated capabilities; check the specifications for the exact device rather than inferring them from a label. Qualcomm’s feature overview and Intel’s explanation describe the distinction.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Downlink MU-MIMO

Downlink multi-user MIMO lets a compatible access point transmit to multiple compatible clients at the same time when conditions allow. Whether a household can use it depends on both the access point and client-device capabilities. MU-MIMO is not exclusive to Wave 2: a Wi-Fi Alliance certificate for a Wi-Fi 6 access point also lists downlink MU-MIMO. The Wi-Fi Alliance certificate record for the Extreme Networks AP-7612 identifies that product as an 802.11ac Wave 2 Multi-User MIMO access point, while a separate Wi-Fi Alliance Wi-Fi 6 certificate record lists DL MU-MIMO.

Wider channels and other capabilities

A 160 MHz channel can provide more potential link capacity than an 80 MHz channel, but only when the access point, client, configuration, and radio environment support its use. Qualcomm also associates Wave 2 with four spatial streams and extended 5 GHz channel support. These capabilities should be checked individually in a product’s technical specifications.

Does Wave 2 Wi-Fi make internet faster?

Not necessarily. Wave 2 features may increase the capacity available for Wi-Fi links in suitable conditions; they do not guarantee a particular speed for an individual device or internet connection. Actual performance depends on the router or access point, client capabilities, configuration, radio conditions, and the speed of the internet service. The cited sources do not establish a universal real-world speed increase for homes, so a peak theoretical or chipset rate should not be treated as a promised user result.

How to check whether a router supports Wave 2 features

  1. Find the exact model number. Use the full model and hardware revision shown on the router’s label or in its administration interface; product families can include different configurations.
  2. Read that model’s technical specifications or certification. Look for an explicit 802.11ac Wave 2 designation, or verify individual features such as MU-MIMO and 160 MHz channel support. Qualcomm’s product overview and the Wi-Fi Alliance certificate for the AP-7612 illustrate the kinds of feature claims to look for: Qualcomm Wi-Fi products and the AP-7612 certificate record.
  3. Check bands and channel widths. Confirm which bands the device supports and whether the specification explicitly lists the channel width you need. Do not assume that an AC product name means it supports every Wave 2 capability.
  4. Check your client devices too. A phone, laptop, or other client must support the relevant feature for that feature to be usable on its connection.

The AP-7612 certificate and Qualcomm’s Wave 2 radio description are examples of the product category, not current consumer-router recommendations. Qualcomm describes its Wave 2 radio technology for premium routers and other home-network products.

Wave 2 compared with Wave 1 and later Wi-Fi

Term What it describes Useful distinction
802.11ac Wave 1 An earlier phase of Wi-Fi 5 capabilities Intel associates it with 80 MHz channel support.
802.11ac Wave 2 A later phase of Wi-Fi 5 capabilities Commonly associated with downlink MU-MIMO and 160 MHz channels; Qualcomm also lists four spatial streams and extended 5 GHz channel support.
Wi-Fi 6 A later Wi-Fi generation MU-MIMO also appears in Wi-Fi 6 specifications, so MU-MIMO alone does not identify a device as Wave 2.

The distinction is about capability grouping, not a simple speed ranking. A device’s usable features depend on its own specifications and the devices connecting to it.
