A water lily is usually an aquatic plant in the genus Nymphaea. One example is Nymphaea ampla, a tropical American species. The common name can also be used more broadly for aquatic plants in the water-lily family, Nymphaeaceae, so the intended meaning depends on context.

What is the scientific name for a water lily?

In strict botanical usage, a water lily is a plant in the genus Nymphaea. Kew’s Plants of the World Online genus entry accepts Nymphaea and describes it as “Known generally as water-lilies.” Its plants are aquatic herbs with medium to large leaves that may float on the water, rise above it, or remain submerged.

Nymphaea is the genus name, not the name of one particular species. A plant’s full scientific name pairs the genus with a species epithet, as in Nymphaea ampla.

What does “water lily” mean in a broader sense?

The term is sometimes applied more loosely to aquatic plants in the family Nymphaeaceae. The Missouri Botanical Garden’s “Water Lilies for the Home Gardener” guide (2020) describes five genera in that family as collectively called water lilies, while using “true water lilies” for Nymphaea. Lotus appears in this broader family-level discussion, but it is not a member of the genus Nymphaea.

How can you recognize a water lily?

Typical Nymphaea are rhizomatous aquatic perennials. They commonly have rounded leaves that float on the water and showy, cup- or bowl-shaped flowers held at or above the surface; some flowers are fragrant. The Royal Horticultural Society summarizes these traits in its Nymphaea profile. Minnesota’s Department of Natural Resources notes that leaves may have a V-shaped cleft and that flowers can occur in several colors.

What is an example of a water lily species?

Nymphaea ampla is a clear example of a water lily in the strict sense. Kew accepts the species and labels it “WATER LILY” in its Plants of the World Online species entry. Kew records its native range as Tropical & Subtropical America and describes it as a rhizomatous aquatic plant growing primarily in the wet tropical biome.

Where can I find reliable references for a botanical model?

For scientific naming and accepted taxonomy, start with Kew’s Nymphaea genus entry and its Nymphaea ampla species entry. For recognizable plant features, consult the RHS Nymphaea profile and the Minnesota DNR’s non-native waterlilies guide. The Missouri Botanical Garden’s 2020 home-gardener guide helps clarify how the common name is used across the family.

For a model label, a useful format is the scientific name followed by the common name, such as “Nymphaea ampla — water lily.” If you are modeling a particular species, use that species’ own reference images and description; the genus-level traits above do not establish the exact shape, color, or proportions of every species.

Does the name tell you whether a water lily can be planted locally?

No. Identification and planting permission are separate questions, and rules depend on location. Minnesota DNR says non-native water lilies are regulated invasive species in Minnesota: they may be possessed, sold, bought, and transported there, but may not be introduced into a free-living state. That guidance applies to Minnesota, not everywhere. Check the rules for your own jurisdiction before planting or releasing an aquatic plant.
