Yes—but only as a laboratory demonstration so far. A University of Vienna team converted several aromatic waste plastics into porous, water-attracting polymer networks that adsorb humidity from air, then release it when warmed. The materials captured almost 60% of their own weight in water in humid conditions and about 20% in dry, desert-like air.
The result is a materials platform, not a certified drinking-water machine. Long-term durability, resource use, water purification and commercial deployment are still being evaluated.
What the Vienna study actually made
Researchers led by Anastasiia Naryshkina, Paul Schweng and Robert Woodward treated aromatic waste plastics with sulfuric acid to create porous polymer networks. Demonstrated feedstocks included general-purpose polystyrene packaging, polycarbonate recovered from old CDs, ABS from LEGO bricks and a selected mixture of waste plastics.
The treatment performs two jobs. Aromatic rings in the original polymers provide sites where chains can be linked into a three-dimensional network. Sulfonic-acid groups added during treatment make the network’s internal surfaces hydrophilic, so they attract and hold water molecules even when the surrounding air is relatively dry.

How a plastic sponge pulls water from air
- Expose the porous material to humid air. Water vapour migrates into the network and binds to the hydrophilic sulfonic-acid sites.
- Allow adsorption to continue. The pores act as storage space, concentrating moisture inside the solid instead of requiring liquid water at the input stage.
- Apply mild heat. Warming the sponge weakens the water-surface interactions and drives desorption into a separate condenser or collection vessel.
- Repeat the cycle. The same material can be alternately loaded from air and regenerated with heat.
In the reported experiments, most adsorption and desorption took place within about one hour when mild heat such as sunlight was used for regeneration. That timing describes the demonstrated laboratory cycle; it does not establish how large a field installation would perform under changing weather, airflow or contamination.
Water uptake under different humidity conditions

These are material uptake values, not guaranteed daily water production. Actual output would also depend on the mass of sorbent, contact with air, humidity swings, heating method, condensation losses and how completely each cycle is regenerated.

The inclusion of a mixed feedstock is important for recycling economics: a future process might not need perfectly sorted waste. However, the study does not establish that every aromatic plastic, every contamination level or every mixed-plastic stream will behave identically.

Not without additional treatment and certification. The reported work demonstrates capturing and releasing water vapour; it does not certify the condensate as potable, specify an approved contact material, or document removal of residual sulfuric acid, plastic additives, degradation products, airborne pollutants or microbes. A practical drinking-water system would need validated washing and neutralization, sealed collection, filtration or disinfection, chemical and microbiological testing, and regulatory approval.

How durable are the sponges?
The University of Vienna release says the materials withstand repeated capture-and-release cycling well. It also says detailed testing of long-term performance and overall resource requirements is ongoing. That supports repeatable laboratory operation, but not a defined service life, warranty, lifetime water yield or commercial reliability estimate.
What this means for off-grid water
Atmospheric-water sorbents can be useful where piped supplies are unavailable and electricity is limited, because regeneration may use low-grade heat or sunlight. The Vienna approach also gives discarded plastics a second use, linking waste reduction with decentralized water production.

Its practical value will depend on the complete system rather than uptake alone: how much sulfuric acid and washing water processing consumes, whether the polymer remains stable in dust and polluted air, how the heat is supplied, how quickly water can be condensed, and what treatment is required before use. None of those resource and life-cycle questions has been fully answered by the current release.
How it differs from other recycled-plastic sorbents
A separate 2025 peer-reviewed study made porous sponges from recycled PET for oil-water separation. Those materials absorbed up to 22 grams of oil per gram of sponge, separated oil-water emulsions at more than 97% efficiency and reached about 726.7 litres per square metre per hour in gravity flux. Those figures concern liquid-oil cleanup, not water vapour capture, so they cannot be used to estimate atmospheric-water output from the Vienna materials.

Is this technology ready to buy?
No. The evidence describes a University of Vienna research result, not a consumer appliance, certified purifier or proven commercial deployment. No current product faithfully matches the reported waste-plastic adsorbent. Generic atmospheric-water generators, desiccant packs, laboratory sponges and sulfuric-acid kits should not be treated as substitutes for this material or as validated drinking-water solutions.
A future licensing or technology-transfer project is plausible, but availability, certification, operating costs and production scale would need to be verified when a specific product is announced.
