No—they are related, but a washing-machine lint trap and a drain-pump filter are not the same part. A lint trap is a screen used by some top-load designs to catch fabric fibers near the tub, agitator or upper rim. A drain-pump filter sits in the outlet path and protects the pump from lint, coins, hair, buttons and other debris. Many front-load washers have a user-accessible pump filter behind a small lower-front door, while newer top-load models may have no removable lint filter at all.
What each filter does
Lint trap or lint filter
A lint trap is positioned where wash water and loose fibers can be intercepted before they leave the tub. On models that use one, the screen may be inside the center of the agitator, attached beneath an agitator cap, or mounted along the upper rim of the basket. Its main job is to collect fabric fibers, hair and similar lightweight material released during washing.
The term is not used consistently. Some manufacturers call a tub screen a lint filter; others use “washer filter” or even “drain-pump filter” as a general service term. Location and construction matter more than the name printed in a parts list.
Drain-pump filter
A drain-pump filter is a debris screen in the water-out path, normally between the wash tub and the drain pump or incorporated into the pump housing. LG describes its front-load filter as collecting lost buttons, loose change and lint. Samsung describes the filter as protecting the pump by filtering water draining from the drum.

Because it is in the outlet path, this filter must handle more than fibers. Coins, hair clips, buttons, tissues, small socks and other objects can reach it. A restricted filter can make the washer drain slowly, leave clothes wet, extend a cycle, prevent spinning or produce rattling and humming noises.
Lint trap and drain-pump filter compared
| Comparison | Lint trap | Drain-pump filter |
|---|---|---|
| Where it sits | Inside or around the wash tub, often in an agitator or along the upper basket rim | In the drain-water path, commonly behind a lower-front service door on a front-load washer |
| Primary material captured | Mostly fabric lint and fibers | Lint plus coins, hair, buttons, clips and other small objects |
| Typical machines | Some top-load models; design and production year determine whether one exists | Common on front-load models, but not universal and still model-dependent |
| How you access it | A removable screen, agitator insert or rim-mounted filter when provided | A threaded filter behind a service hatch, sometimes alongside a small emergency drain hose |
| What a blockage looks like | Visible lint remaining on clothing or around the basket | Slow or failed draining, wet clothes, long cycles, poor spin performance or pump noise |
| Can every owner clean it? | No. Some washers have no removable lint screen | No. Some models use a non-user-serviceable pump arrangement |
Where to find the filter on your washer
Top-load washer with an agitator
Look first inside the agitator. A filter may be under a small cap at the top, inside a removable center column, or attached to the agitator’s lower section. Do not pry off a cap unless the owner’s manual shows that it is designed to come off; forcing it can break retaining tabs or damage the agitator.
If nothing is inside the agitator, inspect the upper rim of the basket. Rim-mounted screens can be narrow and may blend into the plastic trim. Some models have two small filters rather than one large screen.
Top-load washer without a visible lint screen
Not finding a screen does not automatically mean a part is missing. GE states that on many top-load models made from 2001 onward, fine-mesh filters under the agitator were removed after testing showed that a stronger pump and larger holes in the basket hub removed lint more effectively and reduced drain-system clogs. Those machines rely on pump flow and basket-hole design instead of a consumer-removable trap.

Check the manual by model number before removing panels or ordering a replacement. If the manual lists no lint filter, do not install a generic screen in the tub; an unapproved part can interfere with the agitator, restrict flow or come loose during a cycle.
Front-load washer
On many front-load machines, the drain-pump filter is behind a small door at the lower front, usually on one side of the kick panel. Opening that door may reveal a round threaded filter and, on some models, a short emergency drain hose with a plug.
The small door is not a detergent compartment or a secondary lint tray. It provides service access to the pump filter and, when fitted, a way to drain water before the filter is removed.
Machines with no consumer-accessible filter
A manual may show a pump strainer that is accessible only after removing a cabinet panel, or it may specify that the machine has no owner-removable filter. Do not disassemble the cabinet to look for one unless the manufacturer’s service instructions specifically authorize that work. Cabinet removal exposes wiring, sharp edges and residual water, and it can create a service or warranty issue.

Why the little door at the bottom matters
The lower-front hatch on a front-load washer is there because water remains in the sump and pump housing after a normal cycle. If the pump filter needs cleaning, that trapped water will come out as soon as the filter is loosened. The hatch lets you control the release instead of allowing water to spill behind the machine.
Depending on the design, you may drain through a dedicated emergency hose first, or loosen the filter gradually so water flows into a shallow pan. The filter itself is usually turned counterclockwise to remove and clockwise to reinstall. Never assume the door contains a replaceable “lint trap” that can be pulled out dry.
How to clean a front-load drain-pump filter safely
Use the model manual as the controlling procedure. The sequence below matches the common front-load arrangement, but the shape of the filter, hose and access door varies.
- Switch the washer off. End the cycle, press the power button and unplug the appliance if the manual permits or requires unplugging before service. Keep hands and tools away from moving parts.
- Open the lower service door. Put a shallow pan directly below the filter area and place towels around it. Residual water is normal even when the drum appears empty.
- Drain the residual water. If an emergency hose is present, remove its plug and let water run into the pan, emptying the pan as needed. If there is no hose, loosen the filter a little at a time and retighten it while changing pans.
- Remove the filter. Turn the filter counterclockwise. Keep pressure straight on the filter; do not lever it sideways with pliers. A cross-threaded or jammed cap can break if forced.
- Clear the debris. Pull out lint, hair, coins, buttons and any other objects. Check the filter cavity with a flashlight for material that may have remained behind the screen.
- Rinse the filter. Wash it under running water and use a soft brush for packed lint. Avoid solvents or sharp tools that could tear the mesh or damage the seal.
- Inspect the seal and threads. Remove grit from the O-ring or sealing surface. A damaged, flattened or missing seal can leak when the pump runs.
- Reinstall fully. Insert the filter straight and turn it clockwise until it is firmly seated according to the manual. Do not leave it partly engaged; an incompletely seated filter can leak or allow debris past the pump.
- Close the hatch and test. Wipe up water, reconnect power, run a short rinse or drain program and watch the service area for leaks and unusual pump noise.
How often should you clean it?
There is no single interval for every washer. Cleaning frequency depends on the model, the loads you wash and how much debris reaches the pump. Follow the interval in your owner’s manual; the following manufacturer instructions illustrate why a universal schedule is unsafe.

| Manufacturer guidance | Interval and scope | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| LG | Monthly cleaning for applicable front-load models | A model-specific recommendation, not a rule for every LG or other washer |
| Whirlpool | Every six months for one all-in-one platform | Applies to that platform’s instructions, not to all Whirlpool washers |
| Other models | May specify a different interval or no owner-cleanable filter | Use the exact model manual and any service alerts for your machine |
Clean sooner if you routinely wash pet bedding, heavily linted fabrics, tissues left in pockets or items with loose hair. A new rattling sound, a drain warning or increasingly wet laundry is a reason to inspect the filter even if the calendar interval has not arrived.
Symptoms that point to a blocked pump filter
| Symptom | What it can indicate | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Water remains in the drum | Restricted filter, blocked hose or a pump problem | Drain safely, then inspect the filter and hose for obstructions |
| Clothes are wetter than usual | The washer cannot reach a proper drain or spin because water is not leaving quickly enough | Check the filter, drain hose routing and selected cycle |
| Cycle takes much longer | The control is waiting for a slow drain or retrying the pump | Look for lint and objects in the filter; note any displayed code |
| Spin does not start | Many washers inhibit high-speed spin when water remains | Resolve the drain restriction before testing another spin cycle |
| Humming, rattling or grinding near the pump | An object may be striking the pump impeller, or the pump may be worn | Switch off, drain residual water and inspect the filter cavity |
| Lint on clothing but normal draining | The washer may not have a removable lint trap, or the existing screen may need cleaning | Check the manual for the machine’s lint-management design |
A clean filter does not prove that the entire drain system is clear. Inspect the external drain hose for kinks, a blocked standpipe or incorrect installation. If the pump still will not drain after the filter and hose are clear, stop repeated cycles and use model-specific service guidance; the pump, wiring or control may require diagnosis.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do front-load washers have a lint trap?
Some front-load washers have no separate tub lint trap. Instead, the drain-pump filter collects lint after it leaves the drum, along with small objects. In everyday conversation, owners may call that part a lint filter, but its engineering role is pump protection and debris screening in the outlet path.
Other front-load designs may use internal screens that are not intended for routine owner removal. The only reliable answer is the filter diagram and cleaning procedure for the exact model. Do not infer the design from the washer’s appearance or from another machine in the same product family.

How to identify a replacement filter
Replacement filters are model-specific. The same-looking cap can have different thread dimensions, seals, handle shapes or mesh arrangements, so a generic part may leak or fail to protect the pump.
- Find the complete model number. Read the rating plate or the manual; the model code is usually more precise than the product family name.
- Confirm that a removable filter is listed. Parts diagrams and the maintenance section should identify the filter, strainer or pump assembly.
- Match the part description. Compare the filter, cap, seal and any attached handle with the manufacturer’s diagram. Some machines sell the seal separately; others require the complete filter assembly.
- Check regional suffixes. A model sold in one country can use a different pump or filter than a similarly named regional version.
- Inspect the old part before ordering. Note damaged threads, a split mesh or a flattened seal. If the pump housing itself is cracked, replacing only the screen will not solve the leak.
- Verify the return and fit policy. Do not install a part that cannot be seated fully or that leaves the access door unable to close.
For a top-load washer, verify first that the design actually includes a removable lint screen. Many newer machines do not, making a proposed “lint-trap replacement” incompatible even when the model is described broadly as a top-loader.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the terms interchangeably. A tub lint screen and a pump filter can collect some of the same fibers, but they are in different locations and protect different parts of the machine.
- Opening a pump filter without a pan. Water can spill quickly and may contain detergent residue or sharp objects.
- Forcing a stuck cap. Cross-threading, trapped coins and pressure on the wrong angle can damage plastic threads. Drain more water and consult the manual instead of applying excessive force.
- Running cycles with the filter partly installed. The machine may leak, and debris can bypass the pump protection.
- Assuming every top-loader has a screen. Pump and basket-hole improvements eliminated removable fine-mesh filters from many designs.
- Using a household strainer as a substitute. Unapproved mesh can collapse, shed material or reduce the designed flow rate.
- Ignoring pockets. Coins, hair clips and buttons are common pump-filter debris. Empty pockets before washing to reduce blockages.
- Replacing a filter before checking the hose. A kinked or blocked drain hose can produce the same symptoms as a dirty filter.
A practical decision path
- Start with the symptom. Visible lint with normal draining points toward the lint-management design; standing water, wet clothes or pump noise points toward the drain path.
- Identify the washer type. Check whether it is front-load or top-load and whether it has an agitator.
- Use the model manual. Look for “lint filter,” “drain-pump filter,” “pump filter,” “coin trap” or “emergency drain.”
- Locate only the documented access point. Check the agitator or rim on an applicable top-loader, or the lower-front hatch on an applicable front-loader.
- Clean and test before buying parts. A blocked filter often restores operation after proper draining, rinsing and reseating.
- Escalate when the evidence points beyond the filter. Persistent failure with a clean filter and unobstructed hose may require pump or electrical service.
What to remember
The name “filter” does not identify a universal washer part. A lint trap is a tub-area screen found on some top-load designs; a drain-pump filter is an outlet-path screen commonly reached through the lower front of many front-load washers. Some machines have both, some have only a pump filter, and some have no user-removable filter. Model documentation determines the location, cleaning interval and correct replacement.
